Name one thing that made you choose your Pediatric over another one.

I was sitting here thinking all about this last night after my sister in law mentioned that she is now PG with her second child. All the children on this side of the family go to the same Pediatric assosication. How did that happen? My sisinlaw convinced myself and her brother's wife, who is now mom to a 3 week old baby girl, to choose them over the others we were looking at. And I just figured out why I let her talk me into them over the one I first choose.....AFTER HOUR OFFICES INSTEAD OF ER ROOMS!

Instead of going to an ER room and waiting god knows how many hours I can take my daughter to one of the specified after hour care offices and GET THE SAME TREATMENTS minus a few things for half the cost and wait time. It's a great thing when your child is sick on the weekends and you know that their regular office is closed......even if they have weekend hours they never extend past 12pm around us.

So that really was the number one reason to choose this pediatric over the first one I choose......and that got me wondering.......what was the number one thing that made you choose who you go to with your child?

Well gotta log off....our sick child appointment is in half an hour.....poor girls been throwing up and icky since Tuesday night on/off. Thought it was the bug going around the daycare but that would have disappeared within 48 hours the longest and that time limit expired last night.....sigh. Time to find out exactly what it is so I know how many sick days I have to use up and reschedule appointments to accomidate them......harsh I know but when you are given so many paid sick days you have to consider that into the equation because once they are gone you have to "pay" to take sick days in one way or another.

1. he isn't stupid.

Honestly - its the best you can hope for in this pissant town. he's actually quite competent but its difficult making him sit still to listen to my concerns and make him absorb them. But if you're a bit pushy - he'll get it.

mine is the only pediatric office within 50 miles. Not much of a choice here.

The main reason is because our pediatrician has seen 3 generations of my family and knows the family history very well. I'm very comfortable with him and he talks to me like an intelligent woman not a stupid patient. He knows how to calm my fears, build my confidence as a mother, and he's great with my daughter.

One of the great things he did was when my daughter was first born he ordered the PKU test AND a T4 (thyroid panel) because thyroid disorders run in my family. How many other pediatricians would have done that?? I love my doctor and I mourn the day he retires. Hopefully that won't be for a long, LONG time!

I have many reasons.

- I'm a parent first, RN second. My children's doctor listens closely to me when I say something is wrong and looks for a solution. If she can't find it, she admits it and gives us a referral, until I am satisfied with the answers. We actually got 4 referrals for the most major issue in our lives with one of our kids, and it saved her life.

- The doctor is willing to admit when she makes a mistake, and does what she can to fix it.

- She takes the extra time to find out the full history of symptoms instead of blowing in the room, saying Boo, and running out.

- She knows with my daughter's health needs we really do need extra care from a doctor that really knows the history, so gave us her home and cell phone numbers for emergencies. She replies to the calls very quickly when I need to use them.

- She makes the time to come to the hospital while we're hospitalized, even on her days off, to see how we're doing.

- She is encouraging and treats us all with respect. She had very good suggestions that helped me greatly as I went from being a single mom to a parent of 5 with my RN degree, and was nothing but encouraging.

- She's more than willing to learn more about her profession on a continuing basis; believe it or not, many doctors either aren't willing to learn, or have too large of an ego to believe they need to. Some doctors say since they were told in medical school they'd never see my family's disorder, we must not have it.

- She lets us get seen en-masse on occasion when she's short on appointments and several of us are sick at the same time with the same thing.

- She writes me letters and sends me a copy of the medical summary after every appointment as she knows how important it is for me to keep a full medical history on hand.

These are just the tip of the iceberg. Very few are this caring, so we fully intend to keep the doctor we have.
