2 month old nap schedule?

[deleted account] ( 8 moms have responded )

We are trying to establish a 2 month old sleep schedule. We have been breastfeeding on demand and letting him sleep when he sleeps, but I am ready for some kind of schedule so that I can know when to plan outings and appointments. He is starting to sleep through the night (goes to bed between 10 and midnight and wakes between 4 and 6 to feed, then goes back down for another 1-2 hours). Daytime naps are totally random. He will go a couple of days taking four or five 30 mintues naps and then he will have a day where he takes two solid 3 hour naps. He is definitely fussier on the days when he only cat naps so we would like to encourage these longer naps (plus mom could use a little break on those days).

Does anyone have a nap/sleep schedule for their 2 month old or suggestions for getting him on a schedule? We are not quite ready to go to something as extreme as Babywise since he doesn't eat at even intervals and the pediatrician wants to see more weight gain.

Hey Mollie,

I have just trained my 5 month old to follow a routine that FINALLY helped him sleep, feed and be generally contented. The same book i used promotes that even at a very young age (2-4 weeks), a routine which meets the baby's natural needs and the family's life can be established.

This is the routine the book suggested for 6-8 week old babies so it should work as a 2 month old schedule:

Feeds:

*7am

*10:45am

*2/2:3pm

*6:15pm

*10:30pm

Nap time between 7am-7pm:

*9am-9:45am

*11:45am/12noon - 2/2:30pm

*4:30pm-5pm

Note: maximum day time sleep: 4 hours

Expressing times: 6:45am and 9:45pm

I strongly recommend you get the book called The New Contented Little Baby Book by Gina Ford. As you will need to read the book carefully to understand these seemingly strict routines.

It has worked the wonder for me and my baby Ocean. He's much more happy now.

Hope this helps with a 2 month old schedule.

I have a 2 month as well and he is also breastfeeding on demand, He usually wakes up at 8 then naps from 10-12 then naps again from 2-430 then again from 630-730 then goes to bed at 9 and usually sleeps till about 3-4 then again until 6-7 and then again till 8-9. It seems pretty good sp far, I hope he starts sleeping longer at night soon I would love some more sleep.

At 2 months they are still on their own schedule, not yours! You should get "Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems" by Dr. Ferber. It will give you great insight into babies sleep patterns. It will also help when they are old enough to start self soothing themselves to sleep. It really helped us. We have an 8 month old and he is sleeping great but that didn't start happening until about 4 months so I don't think you should start a 2 month old schedule.

I agree with stacey that a 2 month old schedule won't work, but as for your baby boy being on ur schedule, we just went out if we had to, sometimes it was a bit rough but thats what its about, if we need to go out and our babies sleeping we just get her and put her in the carseat, she will go to sleep again if she wants, my older daughter(now 2.5yrs) we did the same..... over all your children can be on ur schedule, I bought a nursing blanket and nursed if I had to, more places than you think(doctors off, mall,,ect) have more "private" type places you can go. pumping works too! I do have to say though we didnt take our kids out alot until they were at about 3-4 mo. at 4 mo old our youngest daughter came camping with us, we had a motor home, more convenient but it was great.

My son was on a schedule when he left the hospital since he was a preemis and they got him on one before we went home. I really recommend you read Baby Wise. It really helped me keep my son on a scheulde and me sane. They state in the book that babies schedules should sleep, eat, wake in that order. Good luck with your 2 month old's schedule!

The best thing to do is when your baby is ready for that ldy bottle, or feeding I would suggest a nice bath and a rub down, they will sleep almost through the night.

you can't really start a 2 month old schedule. schedules shouldn't start until 3 months...try reading "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Marc Weissbluth, M.D.
