My baby girl is 5 months old. I would love to have her ears pierced. I've received conflicting advice on when to do it. My friend said to have it done at 6 months because she will be too small to pull the earrings out if it irritates her. But my chemist said to wait until 1 year, because if it is done while she is too small the holes might be skew later on. What do you think is the best time to have the ears pierced?

just my personal opinion but ihave always thought that piercing a baby's ears when they have to lay on them all of the time was not a great idea. if they hurt, she cannot tell you but when i lay on my earrings, my ears start to hurt. my daughter wanted her ears pierced, that is what she got for her 5th bday. we made a huge deal of it and she felt so grown up and proud of them. she was also old enough to understand when i had to clean and care for them. she could also tell me if they were uncomfortable. just my thoughts.

My daughter's ears were pierced at 6 months because I wanted her to be used to them by the time she would be interested in pulling at them. She never touched them, never had infections and only cried for about 10 seconds. They had two girls do it so her ears were pierced at the same time all at one shot. She's 2 now and has never had a problem with them, plus they were so pretty when she was a baby (it's difficult to tell boy or girl. The earrings helped :)
I have a 5 mos old now and will be getting her ears done in 2 weeks :)

How about when she's old enough to decide for herself if she wants them or not?

Well, my ears where pierced at 3 months and as long as u take care of the piercing and clean it properly, it wont get infected and be just fine.

I pierced my daughter's ears at 4 months old. I think the younger the better. At one year old, they can pull and ynk on the ears..when they are small as my daughter was, they onlycry fr a second..kinda like when the get their first round of shots. My mom had mine pierced at 6 weeks but from what I understand, nowadays, thay have you wait until their first round of shots. Best of luck with your decision!

I know you are getting a lot of sugestions! But remember you are the only one that can decide. My 2 grown daughters had their ears pierced by the time they were 6 months old. I now have 2 grandaughters 7 & 5 and were also done by 6 months of age. The younger they are, the easier it will be to take care of and the least they will mess with the ears! good luck and remember  YOU are the mom, you know whats best!

Totall agree with this one.  Just be sure you go to a reputable place.  My daughter cried for about 2 minutes until I gave her a toy and she forgot all about her ears.  Take care of them just you would your own.  Also her piercings are still in just the right place and she has since had another added.  I had hers done when she was 3 mos old.  Never had any problems with it.  I made sure to always use the kind with the screw on backs so she could not accidently pull them off.

Again, you are mom and you know best.  Good luck with your decision!

I personally don't believe in piercing babies ears but that's just me!! I thought it best to wait for my daughter to ask if she could have her ears pierced, she will be turning 5 in a couple of mnths and is now asking if she have them done.......there for I am now doing my homework and finding the best place to take her to get them done for her birthday!! Good luck with what ever you decide, all I can say is....do as much research and ask as many questions of other people who have had it done!!

I think u should wait until she can talk. this way she can tell you if the ear is hurting. My daughter is 3 years 9 months and we just got her ear pierced. It hurt for a couple days and she was able to tell me that it was hurting. But if u decide to get it pierced now, u should go to Buzzle.com and read up on ear piercing after care.

I had my daughters done at 6 months. She cried for about 30 seconds and has not even noticed that she had them since. No pain, no infection, no issues at all. She doesn't mess with them at all. The younger they are the easier it is overall.

I recently had my daughter's pierced when she was 2 1/2 months old, she hardly felt it. I think its a good idea to do it when she is young as she will hardly feel it or touch it. Also if she decides she doesn't want her ear piereced she can let it close off . I can't imagine that she will not want earrings, and if you do it now I feel she will love you for it, as she won't have to go through the pain when she is older. I personally feel it's a win win situation if u want to pierce them.

Just want to let you know that what ever you decide will be great! I have a daughter that is 9 and I just had her ears pierced a second time last month. We let them close up by accident the first time but hope to keep on the ball this time. Good luck on making your decision

I am not in favor of piercing a baby's ears. I made my girls wait until they were old enough to choose (and sign!) for themselves if they wanted it done. Scarring in forever.

Wait until she asks, I had mine done as 12 years old and my daughter wanted hers done as she was leaving primary school.

I had my daughters' ears pierced at 3 months - they are perfectly fine & level. I'm not aware of any defect that causes ears to grow at different rates causing the holes to become skewed.

She never played with them. never got poked in the head with the posts. Never got an infection.

She is 7 yrs old now and just had her first infection. Apparently at her birthday party her friends were admiring her new earrings and they all touched, played, turned her earrings. Lovely.

Wait until she asks for earrings is the best advice I can give. Both of my daughters have their ears pierced. The older one, now 7, begged to have hers pierced at the age of 4. I wanted her to see the process so I had mine pierced a second time. She still wanted it done. So I let her and she did not flinch or cry when it was done. Her sister was 2 and wanted no part of it until 3 days later. I made her wait another 2 days and then finally took her to Claire's. They are 7 and 5 now and love their earrrings.

I had mine pierced at 11, and I will likely wait with my girls until they are old enough to ask, but everyone that I know that has had their girl's ears pierced when they were young did it when they were between 9 months and a year old. Also I would recommend having it done by someone who does the piercing the old way with the sterile needles because the piercing guns often cause more problems than the needle does.

I was told by my daughters pediatrician she can have them pierced after her first vaccinations. I am waiting a little longer than that.. but that's what I was told.

I had my daughters ears pierced at 7 months & would have had them done earlier if my husband had let me,my daughter never plays with her earrings & has never had any problems, younger is better but thats just my opinion....good luck...

My Mom waited until I was old enough to ask my parents to have them done. Everyone has a choice to pierce their ears, let it be hers.

Got my daughter's ears pierced at 6 months at Claire's and it was a breeze. I really like their idea of 2 people simultaneously piercing both ears, so no squirming. There's a list of things to do for after care for infection (which could happen at any age). I'm not sure about your location, and if you have a similar store. I believe the younger they are, the easier it is to do it. And in future, if she decides she doesnt like it, she can stop wearing earrings, and the holes will fill in.

Personally, I think piercing is a pretty extreme thing to do to a baby of any age! I struggle enough taking my little ones for their jabs, (although I do as I know it will benefit them in the long term), so I can't imagine putting them through a painful procedure and healing process just for cosmetic reasons. I'm not anti body modification, I have a few piercings myself and plan on a couple of tattoos, but none of these have been before my late teens and all have been my own decision. I really hope I haven't offended with my response, it certainly isn't my intention, but am I the only person that is shocked by the whole idea of piercing babies!?

At 6 weeks personally but most places won't do it until 3 months. I had my DD done at 3 months and no problems at all she is 8 years now. I had mine done as a baby also 27 years later everything is still fine~

I have a 9 month old and a 3 1/2 year old. My hubby wanted to pierce the older one's when she was a baby and I was hesitant. I was scared of possible infection so I kept holding off. Right before her 3rd b-day we decided to have them pierced.I figured she was old enough to tell me if they hurt or if their was anything else wrong. What I didnt take into account was the pain factor. My oldest complained about the entire healing process for weeks. It took her 6 months before she stopped complaining. Needless to say we pierced the babies' ears at 5 months and never thought twice. She doens't pull at them, complain or even notice when they get caught on clothing. This is just my experience though, you will have to weigh the reasons. With us, we were going to pierce them before they were old enough to ask for it so in our experience sooner is better than later. Good Luck!
