My sister stopped breastfeeding her 3 week old baby, they put her on enfamil formula and she started having a hard time pooping. They've switched to Nestle Goodstart but her poop was still kind of thick. They took her to the doctor and were told to use PMS Lactulose. I need to know if anyone else has used these or anything like them. Is it safe to give an infant a laxitive, especially when they can poop.

My daughter was four weeks early, i breastfead mostly for 2 weeks and then we had to stop. We put her on Similac Advance, and she was constipated also. Its the transition from breast milk to formula. We never gave kaydence a laxitive, but i do remember trying to give her deluted prune juice to help it. It eventually subsided and she was fine. But my friends mom is a nurse and its the transition from the breast milk to formula, because if you notice how when babies breast feed, they have seedy smushey poop. Its just the transition and she will be okay! I dont remember exactly how long it will take to get it fixed, (i remember worrying because everytiem she pooped she cried and cried) But she was eventually fine. I would reccoment not to keep switching formulas though. It messes with her insides and confuses them on what to get used to!! I hope this helps! Let us know how things turn out!

My son was on the enfamil with iron. Had the same problem. He needed the iron, so the doctor told me to put a little clear Karo syrup in each bottle. Never had a problem again. He was 6 lbs.5oz, and never had a weight problem at any age. He is now almost 22 and over 6 ft. We adopted him as a newborn. Some problems don't change when raising babies, try the syrup. I smile when I am out and smell pancakes, it reminds me of that little bundle of joy!

Sometimes babies can accept mothers milk but not a milk base formula. My daughter nursed just fine and when we had to switch her to formula she was lactose intollerant. So we had to put her on a lactose free formula.

I had to switch from breastfeeding to formula because I got pregnant and he wouldn't nurse. He had the same problem and we had to switch his formula because it wasn't the lactose he had an allergy to, it was the milk protein. Then we still had to give him about a teaspoon of acidopholis 2 times a day for a while until he had regular bowel movements. It worked great! He had a bowel movement the next day. I got it at a health food store. You can get ones that aren't made with dairy too. If that is the problem. The acidopholis is great anyways for the immune system if the baby is on formula . I hope that helps some :)

Hi again.... The Pancreas makes insulin to digest natural plant sugars...{ there are approx. 200 healthy plant sugars out there} The DANGER of using syrups is Synthetic, artificial ,processed which can put a stress on the little ones gland and thus induce early diabetic problems....If it is a MUST....use tnePURE Natural Maple Syrup.... the natural Real FOOD children's delicious chewable "Phytoburst" is a GREAT alternative to give kids 100% of their VIt D{like having 4 glasses of milk a day} Plus all the recommended RDA a child needs.Hard to find anything like this anywhere ...Certainly can't eat 8-10 sevings of fruit & veg. This is definitely a healthy choice 4 kids who don't like to eat their veggies..Hope this helps..Take care...In Christ Netty also can call me at 1-780-674-4598 here in Ab/Can. Love to hear advice...

I would talk to the dr. The dr would know exactly what to do. if you do not agree with the one dr then take her to a different one for a second opinion. How long has she had this problem? COuld just be getting use to new stuff. Good luck!

... also, the Karo that the others have recommended will work, but it is not as immediate as the glycerine suppository. I don't know how long the baby has been crying, but it sure made my heart feel better to know I was doing something to help them... and to finally get a bit of peace for myself...lol!!

Hi Amanda, I am a nurse, mother of 4 and have 9 grand children. In my experience as a nurse in acute care 4 20 yrs and Geriatric care 4 10 yrs .I must say absolutely NO your baby does NOT need a laxative when they can poop on their own.;unless your DR. has informed otherwise due to a serious problem. Laxatives have a tendency to cause the baby's rectal sphyncter to become lazy and cause more bowel problems in the future. My mom had 16 children & breast fed all of them. This also gives your baby a very strong immune system as your baby will be receiving all the anti-bodies u already have...& going into your milk gives your baby natural immunity..{ like a vaccination} only going thru your milk....also breast fed babies{approx 3-6 months] ...prevents Juvenile Diabetes in children. Also your breast milk has 5 of the 8 essential natural healthy sugars used in cell to cell communication thus allowing your baby's body to recognize bacteria, viruses, and toxins thus defending the body against invaders. In England mid-wives a baby will not only nurse on the mom but also the mid-wife care giver & she begins to produce breast milk 4 the mom's baby too.The lactation in the mid-wife is stimulated by baby sucking thus the milk glands become active.I also give all my children Patented REAL Food form{ NOT Synthetic} standardized ,stabilized Vit.& min . without preservatives, food colorings, and real foods endorsed by Health Canada. These vit & min are extracted from the stem of a mustard plant which has an extremely high potential of pulling up vit & minerals from the soil that has b een fertilized with REAL fertilizer.Synthetic vit & minerals can cause toxic overload in the body as it is foreign to the body& so can cause malfunction of the immune system. I do hope this info helps you Amanda. Ps with Breast fed baby's even not pooping up to 7 days can be very normal as your brest milk has hardly any waste & baby absorbs & digests almost all of it. Bless u ..If u have any more questions email me at nettystoik@gmail.com .Love to help!! ......In Christ Netty

I would go with a higher quality formula with dha ara omega 3 that sort they really help getting the bowels moving in the mean time try massaging the intestinal area and bicycle peddling the babies legs a little tylenol if the baby seems in discomfort to help relax, I used a lower iron formula for my first born who was extremly constipated.

good luck from mother of 4

We had the same problem when we stopped breast feeding. My son would scream so bad when he had a bowl movement and it would either be like little pebbles or look the size of a toddlers. It was BAD!!! My doctor told me to keep trying different formulas until we found one he seemed to be able to tolerate. We ended up switching his formula to Similac advance early shield. Its a little more expensive but he didn't have any more problems once he was on it. Everything was regular again and no more screaming fits from him. Hope that helps.

Babies & Poop
My boys are now 40 and 35 #1 son had to be switched to formula at 3 weeks due to CO2
poisining to us both from a faulty furnace and had diarhhea problems with any formula including soy and goats milk so he survived on apple juice which caused severe diarhhea but he is now hale and healthy at 40
# 2 son refused bf and went through several different formulas until my mother suggested the old Carnation milk/corn syrup that was used int the 40 & 50's
It worked but constipated him so we used massage and warm baths to help him
He is now a paramedic and exttemly healthy with 3 kids of his own
DO WHAT YOU FEEL IS NECESSARY AND DO NOT LET ANYONE TELL YOU THAT YOU ARE A BAD MOTHER IF YOU CANNOT BREASTFEED
Best of luck

This is OH so common! Simple actually. Go to the pharmacy and pick up some glycerine suppositories. She is too young for the juice right now. Get the smallest ones you can and you will have to insert them into the baby's little hiny. ( I know it sounds gross, but ya gotta do whatcha gotta do...) You will probably have to hold it there for a minute or so, but it will have almost an instantaneous effect. I had this issue and this is what the Dr. and Pharmacist recommended. Cheap, fast, easy! No sweat! (I got 4 and had to do this at least once with all of them!)

Not sure if she has tried this. Works well with little babies. Put some vaseline on an earbud and put it slightly in the baies bum and turn it a bit. Not too deep !!

The prune or apple juice is good too but I would try the above 1st, seen it work with my own and other people's babies.

would love to hear the feedback

Uh I would not give my infant a laxitive, however out of 5 kids I had three that had constipation. My last baby had a problem w enfamil also until we started using Gentalease enfimil. its not soy and its easier on thier tummy. It will take a while to get her systm moving again, until then basic tummy massages should work. If it continues i would give her a baby suppository to soften it but never a laxitive that would cause dehydration ...i would think. (and a very big mess)

OK ladies take it from a grandmother a 3 week old baby does not need prune or apple juice. But the Karo syrup is the best laxitive you can give them the only thing is it should be the dark Karo not the clear. I have 2 girls that are grown and they were raised on Carnation caned milk and karo syrup and the karo was put into the milk to be used as a laxitive. You mix the milk with 2 tlbs karo and boiled water today you could use bottled water. this would make six 8oz bottles a day.

It could be that her baby cannot process the milk fat, and maybe she should try a soy based formula. My daughter had pooping issues as a baby going from formula to 2% that we kept her on the formula till she was almost two, when the doctor said she needed to be off formula. At age four I ended up having to give her fleet enemias to help her go because the dr. said she was backed up. It happened again at age six. Well, we never really knew it was the milk. She is now sixteen and in Sept we went through a couple of horrible months of severe stomach issues. Finally they took an x-ray and found she was backed up to her colon and put her on miralax. We made the decision to try cutting out dairy products even though she the test said she is not allergic to milk. It has helped tremendously. She taking the miralax only if she feels she needs it.

try adding 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of kayro syrup to an 8oz. bottle of formula it should work it did for my kids. I refused to give mine a laxative at that age and got the same advise I'm giving you from a great friend of mine that has kids.

Try the enfamil gentlease, sometime too much iron can cause that. It happened with both my kids, I tried lactose free formula and the gentlease and they both made things a lot easier. Doctors are great but I would also listen to other parents that have gone through the same thing. It's completely natural for the babies to be going through this. It's trial and error sometimes with formulas. I also switched to parents choice (wal-mart brand) and that was great as well. Also a little water, just water can help!!!

My son was extremely constipated at about a month old or so, I used a natural herb called slippery elm. One small pinch in each bottle and he was regular all the time. The doctor had told me to give him Milk of Mag. I did this and it gave him horrible diarhea. If I didn't give it to him he was constipated. I thought I would try a natural herb and it was AMAZING!

We had an issue similiar with our daughter when she was little. It was due to the iron in the formula.I'd look for a formula with an iron count that isn't as high as some of the others.Enafamil had a high iron count and when we switched to different version of it our daughter was back to normal in 2-3 days at most. I wouldn't give my daughter a laxative unless the dr see's a pattern going on for a longer amount of time especially with that young of an infant.Goodluck..

Please do not use the Karo Syrup...it is NOT good for the digestive system in babies and can make them really sick. Try the apple juice..it is like a "natural" laxative. If that doesn't work, please follow your doctors orders.

when switching from breast to formula it can take a while for the baby's immature digestive system to learn to digest formula, which is thicker and more complex than milk. Give it time! Shake the can of formula before scooping. Feed the baby a teaspoon of water after every feeding (it's not much but it will help thin out the formula a bit and it's not enough to mess up the water/salt balance). Poop can be lots of different textures and as long as it's not hard (like rabbit poops) then the baby is probably ok.

My daughter did not breastfeed long either and they started her on formula and she had trouble with pooping. She was able to poop but it was like hard and she seemed to have a lot of trouble getting it out. The best thing we did was to put Karo syrup in her bottles when we made them and it really worked our doctor told us that that is just the norm for some babies for a while and to use the Karo and it worked Now she is four months old and poopin a lot better and if from time to time we have to use it we do. God Bless

He says it is the next best thing to breast milk and judging by what is in it... I believe him... maybe it will help your baby move things along too... worth a try!

i personally went thru this with my son, we found that Enfamil had to much Iron for his body to process so we whiched to Carnation good start, and combined with 1 4oz bottle of apple prune juice he was a happy healthy baby without using a laxitive.

I had the same problem when my son didn't want my breast after three weeks. I don't think that a laxative is a very good idea when the child can poop. As a matter of fact, I would say DON'T DO IT. The constipation or change of bowel is coming from the change in the milk. I used Nestle Good Start and just thinned it out with a little more water until his bowels improved. The breast milk is thinner than the good start and that is a drastic change to the digestive tract, but it will improve.

Put the baby back on the breast if at all possible. Soy milk may be less irritating. Babies can be given glycerine suppositories to ease passing a stool. Offer juice and water to increase fluid volume in the babies body as well.

Argh,no, neverever give an infant a laxative! Formula is very hard to digest for babies, breastmilk is their natural food and the symptoms you describe are the result of the baby trying it's best to digest the formula. If there is no way at all that the little guy can have breastmilk, then these digestive problems and unappealing poos are probably going to be part of the deal.
