Our friends son is 3 and only says a handful of words too. He uses actions or pointing. I think if they waited for him to atleast try and use his speach then he would be saying more because he has no choice if he wants to have anything.
If there doesn't seem to be anything else wrong then maybe try not to get/give her anything even if you know what she wants until she tries to say it? Or encourage her to repeat you.

Best of luck with your little one.

Did the speech therapist tell you anything about what they thought the problem was? I know my daughter's speech therapist has strongly suggested we get her hearing tested because there are certain tones of speech she doesn't seem to be understanding. When we first got her tested we found out she was not delayed in speech per say but cognitively in processing speech. It has been three months in the Early Steps program our school district offers and we've made little progress towards her first step of goals but it's progress. I originally got her tested because I was worried that the dual language atomsphere of her daycare was causing the delay. Testing her was the best move we ever did and this coming April when the PreK registrations arise in the school district we sit down to discuss putting her in a speech driven PreK class to further help her with her speech/cognitive functions.

PES is a picture exchange system that will help your child communicate before she is ready to talk. It is usually a great way to reduce frustration

Hearing checked first off and don't worry, still only very young. My 5 year old is in speech therapy and making good progress now, also very intelligent I believe. He will improve when he is ready, in the meantime don't stress. :-)

Definitely have the hearing checked to rule out anything there. You may be able to receive services with your local school system. There are usually early intervention services available starting at birth, but the agency may differ by state. Sometimes, it is the school system or health department. The services fall under IDEA, Part B for ages 3-21.
What state are you in?

I second getting her hearing checked. Also, regardless of hearing results, start with speech therapy again. Request alternative speech devices in addition to typical therapy at this point so she can at least communicate. There are many types, but they typically start with PECS. It's very simple to set up and learn.

with my first child it took him awhile to speak. i took him to speech therapy and i didn't think it helped much either. he was 3 at the time. he learned in his own time, you might just need to be patient. have u had her hearing checked? my third boy is not speaking much either, i'm gonna wait till he's 3 to talk to the doctor about other options, he'll be 3 in may. i might just have to wait again.:(
