I need some help with this one... my twin 10 month old girls have had a cold for about 6 weeks now.. runny nose... slight cough..really clingy. I can tell they aren't feeling well. We took them to the doctor last week and she said there was nothing really wrong. No ear infection, no fever, and nothing is in their chests. She said there is nothing that she can really give them as far as medication. I am just supposed to make them comfortable until it passes. I have done EVERYTHING it seems. I put a humidifier in their room, used vicks, I am giving them plenty of fluids but NOTHING seems to help. It is making me crazy that they have been sick for this long. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do?? I hate seeing my sweet babies miserable.

My youngest was sick from oct to may until I started her and the fam on a great nutritional supplement. No colds or sickness in almost three years. Email me and I can share this amazing stuff. mhunzek1@rochester.rr.com. It works. My sisters all use it now and no illnesses in our entire fam.

This stuff even works on allergies. I have been plagued since birth and I no longer have the severity of allergies. I am hoping in a few more years I will have no more

I haven't read any of the other posts but here are my recommendations-

1. increase vitamin c (OJ, fresh oranges)

2. feed the kids lots of berries

3. keep them nice and warm

4. wash their bedsheets frequently

5. once they are asleep- sanatize EVERYTHING- just get a clorox wipe and wipe things down including their toys.

Good luck and i hope the nasty cold is out the door asap.

My youngest always had bronchitis or pneumonia. Not anymore. We all take a nutritional supplement. No colds or bronchitis in our house now. Email me your number and we can talk. Mhunzek1@rochester.rr.com. Kids do not eat right so give them the best supplement.

I haven't had chance to read all the other posts because there are so many but have you thought of getting a carbon monoxide meter and checking that the levels in their room are normal. Just a thought because carbon monoxide poisoning has symptoms very much like a cold. Children are more prone to showing the effects than adults so would show this first. I hope they are both better soon and that you get them sorted out soon! xx

Find the cause and remove it. Something changed 6 weeks ago. Did they start eating something they had not eaten before, is there something in the house that was not there before? It could also be that something they are eating has built up past their ability to deal. And often milk products are the culprit. As amazing as it may sound, humans are not designed to consume dairy products, and dairy weakens the immune system. And even though it is pasteurized, not all bacteria and virus in milk is killed, so the immune systems of children who consume it have to constantly fight excess garbage. And no, they don't need the calcium or protein in milk. At this age in nature they would still be breast feeding, but cows milk is not a suitable substitute ( actually nothing is, but there are better alternatives ). There is so much information on the web about why cow's milk is a dangerous food for people, and we have been brainwashed by the dairy lobby. Check it out. Don't expect their illness to pass immediately after stopping dairy either, even if it IS the cause. It takes a couple of weeks for the body to clear out the garbage and for the immune system to recover.

If the cold continues for more than eight weeks I would start to suspect allergies. Do you have pets or does anyone smoke that handles the babies? Do you wear perfume or anyone wear cologne around them? Or use laundry products that are perfumed? It's something to think about and consider discussing with your family physician or pediatrician.

Go to another doctor. Have them double check that they don't need antibiotics. 6 weeks is not a regular cold unless they are catching them from each other week after week when they should be getting over them... It seems like you're doing everything they should...

Have you tried steaming up the bathroom and sitting in there with them and playing with toys or something to entertain them for a while? That can help break up any congestion they may have. Otherwise, I would make sure they are getting as much rest as possible and eating a lot of fruits and veggies, especially those with good bits of Vitamin C. I hope they are better soon!

a couple of things you may be able to try, I myself am a big believer in natural medicine so herbal and chiropractics. When my brother was a small boy he had the same thing, my mum could never get him well, she eventually took him to a naturapath and he recommended taking him to the chiropractor. My brothers health and groth were being affected because he needed an adjustment. After have one or two adjustments he got well and he started growing again. Some vitamin C and childrens vitamin liquid and echanasia will also help. Good luck, I hope this was helpful for you. I can also recommend a cpl of really excellent Chiropractors but I don't know where you are from. Note: not all Chiros are great you need to find a professional health clinic like Family Lifetime Wellness Centre , this one is at Kenmore west Brisbane PH. 07 3878 1553 here they have two very excellent Chiropractors that specialize working with babies and children, Dr Mary and Dr Michael . If this isnt in your area by all means call them for a recomendation for one in your area they will be more than happy to help,They also have other professionals working there like a naturapath, masseuse etc. regards Kate England

my son (who is now 5 1/2) suffered from similar symptoms. he was sick for months on end, and we also had tried everything. it turned out he had massive environmental allergies, as well as an allergy to soy. his soy allergy wasn't anaphylactic, but it caused chest and head congestion. we went soy free and his symptoms improved tremendously. i'd heard that dairy allergies could cause similar symptoms, and i was about to put him on soy milk in an effort to take things into my own hands because i couldn't find a doctor who was willing to do much. that would (obviously) not have been a good thing! i'd talk to your pediatrician about getting a referral to a pediatric allergist. neither my husband nor i suffer from any food allergies, so you never know. good luck to you!

Twins are known to perform several astounding feats, and that includes healing each other. Science can't explain it, but it does happen. Have you tried letting them sleep in the same crib? Since swinging infection is not an issue, maybe this can help.

Honey helps with colds, coughs (it's soothing for the throat)

A pinch of turmeric in lukewarm milk helps with the internal healing

Tomato juice/ Tamarind juice with little salt (acc to taste) and little pepper 2 -3 times a week helps with drainage

Propping up pillows while napping helps (steam bath before sleep, have kids sit in the bathtub play for some time or steaming helps with drainage)

Baby massage before baths with baby oil helps

I tend to agree with the comments about nutrition and vitamins. Perhaps see a nutritionist? Another thing I would suggest from experience is to consult with a chiropractor. I've learned that spinal alignment is very important to the health of the rest of the body - including the immune system. Please keep us posted.

@Katherine Moore: there's actually a good amount of evidence for the use of colloidal silver in major medical journals, some of which are are gathered here: http://www.greenmedinfo.com/substance/co... (5 studies on this page with epub citations, and more related studies in the sidebar). My father, along with many pharmacists, learned to make it in pharmacy school, and it used to be a prescription drug. He's got a doctorate and we've used it in my family for years with no ill effects. Many times it's knocked out a cold or flu quickly for us. Not sure I would use it on 10-month-olds, but it's been very effective for us. It's not for daily use on a long-term basis.

Even though it is winter it could still be allergies. if it's been 6 weeks+... can you think back to when you started running your heater regularly?

You may need a new filter for it or to have your air ducts cleaned.

I have 4 kids, 5, 3, 2, and 7 months. When they all 4 had a 'cold' that lasted almost 2 months my pediatrician suggested these things to me. 1 week later they were all better.

I don't know if it was getting rid of the dust, etc. in the air ducts or that the cold bug had finally just given up. Honestly, I didn't care. They felt better and we were finally all sleeping at night and not miserable during the day!

my daughter had the same problems as your twins. I thought it was a cold that she couldn't get over. Her Paediatrician said it is ok to give her otrivin jr (not sure where you are from but it is a nasal spray). He said to use it for a couple of days to dry the mucus then to use Nasonex(a nasal spray for allergies)..if the Nasonex worked then it would prove that she has allergies. It worked within a day or so,so she has been taking it for a couple of months and have not had a stuffy nose problem since.I know it is not generally recommended to give meds to babies however there ARE some things they can safely take...you just need a good Paed to recommend them and give you a script. Usually a GP will not give you anything and a pharmacist will always say you must go by what the back of the box tells you. That isn't really true but you do need a really good doctor who you trust to help you find something to help your babies

Yes, it could be allergies. My parents were told when I was under a year old that I had cystic fibrosis, and they were prepared to have me die before age 11. They didn't find out until I was 8 that it was allergies that were out of control because my pediatrician didn't "believe" in allergies! Can you imagine a doctor putting a family through thinking their child was going to die because he wouldn't consider a diagnosis?

As a result, I have a really wonky immune system. It can be really, really hard to tell allergies from an infectious illness, because the body will react as if there *is* an illness. Because that's what allergies are: a case of mistaken identity, where the immune system thinks a substance is a germ when it's not.

So this does sound like allergies to me. You could try putting curry powder in their mac n' cheese. The turmeric that turns curry yellow is a powerful anti-inflammatory. If you do that a few times (or you could just mix it in yogurt or butter, just the turmeric, and give it to them--millions of Indian babies eat it daily so it's safe for babies) and see if their symptoms are reduced and that would be a good indication they have allergies. Cheaper and easier than a doctor visit!

Either way, if they're getting a lot of sugars/starch in their diet, reduce it. Both inflammation and illnesses are made worse by sugars. Germs feed on the sugar in the blood, and grains start to turn to sugar in the mouth. And grains are one of the leading allergies now.

The advice for colloidal silver is great. It acts by not allowing germs to multiply. My dad, a pharmacist, learned how to make it in pharmacy school, but it's gone out of fashion with doctors. Coconut oil kills all kinds of germs and works particularly fast on stomach illnesses, but still is known in scientific studies to kill the cold virus and the flu virus (and about 27 other classes of viruses, most bacteria and most bad fungi). It also gets "sleeper germs" that kind of hide out various places in the body.

Bolstering their immune systems with extra vitamins, especially C, B complex, D (cod liver oil) and zinc will help if it's an illness and not an allergy.

You should rub the "vicks" on the bottom of their feet, then put socks on them. And rub the vicks on their backs as well.....then Tuck them I'm bed. The vicks humidifier works really well w/the vicks medicine that you're supose to kit inside it. THIS WILL WORK!

I feel your frustration. Been there done that. Only one of my twins is like this. Go see a children's allergist. You can find out what it is that makes them so miserable. I did not do this until he was 11 yrs old. I am so sorry that no one told me about how allergy shots could really help. He has been to an allergist at Childrens hospital in Austin, TX and now goes to one closer to home. I wish you best of luck! My son is 100 percent better with his shots. Worth every penny.

Best of luck! Stephanie

HI, Jessica, I would also recommend a cervical chiropractor they adjust your child's neck which aligns their bodies and allows their immune systems to function properly... My daughter from 6 months to 3 yrs old seemed to be sick every week with few weeks inbetween where she wasn't doctors couldn't figure it out... After the adjustment she started feeling better within the day and cold gone after 4 days ... Now she gets sick like any normal child..sometimes only twice a yr now... I take her every 6 months now...if it continues give it a shot... You've tried everything else what's one little visit? Good luck hope your babies start feeling better

I haven't gone through and read what other people have written so someone may have suggested this already. My recommendation is to take them to a good chiropractor. My husband is a chiropractor, and he adjusts me and my two kids, and we hardly ever get sick. The dr. will help your twins nervous system to function better, which in turn will help their bodies to fight off whatever bug they have. And the best part is they can be healed naturally without the use of medications or prescriptions.

You can buy colloidal silver and put in an eye dropper and then put into their mouths. (you can take it topically as well as orally). This is natures antibiotic but it is also anti-viral and anti-bacteria. This is a wonderful thing to have in your first aid cabinet. I used it for my son who had RSV and within 3 days it was gone. You can also use if for future ear infections and just even a daily dose for over all immune boost.

Also you can give them each vit d3 supplements too.

i know how you are feeling! it is so frustrating when your children are sick and the doc says nothing's wrong and there's nothing you can do about it. but take heart! at least there's nothing seriously wrong. babies tend to take a lot longer to get over colds b/c they can't hack and cough up that phlegm that is causing their stuffiness and coughing. they also tend to be lying down more often b/c they are not up and moving around like adults are and that's never good for phlegminess (like that word?) :) it could also be teething that is compounding that cold as well. so the best thing to do:

keep up the home remedies. humidifier, liquids, etc. i assume they are on solid foods? try giving them more higher vitamin C containing foods.

have them sit up as much as possible during the day to help drain their sinuses and chest congestion.

try infant advil or tylenol especially around nap/bedtimes to help ease the swelling in their sinuses.

elevate their crib mattress

baby vicks vapor rub but instead of rubbing on their chest, use a very thin baby wash cloth. smear some vapor rub on the wash cloth. lay it flat between the baby's onsie and sleeper. the vapor rub wont absorb into their skin and the scent stays longer so they can get the full benefit of the scent of the eucalyptus. hang in there! i wish i could be of more help!

I agree with the suggestion of seeing an allergist. My son is allergic to molds & weeds, but also has some minor food allergies which can cause those symptom. It can't hurt to try & like me you might be surprised. I was expecting the mold & weeds, but not the foods. It is good to know, because he has some normal food allergies like peanuts & shrimp, but also one very strange - beef. I didn't even know you could be allergic to beef. Now I know. And knowing what is wrong is the beginning of the battle. Good luck.

Just saw the post about the doctor saying children that young don't get allergies, if that is the case why do some infants need soy milk formula, why do mom's of breastfeed babys have to watch what they eat at times? I am sorry but I don't believe that infants can't get allergies. Too many children in my family(extended & my own)have food allergies. Allergies can be inherited & since you have them they probably do to. Check with your family see if there are any food allergies in the family. I did after I was told my kids had them & wow was I surprised again, many of my family & my husbands family have sometime of allergy, food included. Like I said before it can't hurt to check in to it & like in my case if could help a lot more than hurt. My 3 kids are allergic to Peanuts, shrimp, beef, milk & eggs along with the molds, weeds, dogs & cats. I have a nephew allergic to strawberries(found out at 9 months-reaction to baby food with strawberries in it). Again good luck!

Do you live where dust is bad? Or have a cat? Could there be mold? It sounds to me like an irritant allergy. You could try washing their bedding and clothes and use no fabric softener or dryer sheets, and bathe them in an unscented baby soap. Are they in day care? They could just be having one cold after the other. And last, are they cutting teeth? This can cause runny noses, and the drainage could cause the cough.

it sounds like there might be some allergies involved. Because they are 10 months old I dont know if you can/want to give some medication for allergies. Your doctor could tell you if they are old enough. Just a thought. I wouldn't worry too much though. Babies have colds all the time, at least mine do!, haha.

If they are both cranky with this cold, I would also suggest that you use a couple of drops of Eucalyptus oil in their bath. Its general aromatherapy use leans toward assisting the immune system when used during epidemics of colds and flu, measles, and chickenpox.

Jessica, Did your doctor mention anything about the possibilities that they have allergies? Both my sons started showing symptoms of nasal allergies at a very early age, and with my oldest, it even caused a flair up of asthma at just 10 months old. I had to change doctors to get him treated because for two months going back repeatedly to the same doctor, they told me it was just a cold, and he was just catching repeated colds over and over again. I went to another doctor for a second opinion because he was SO miserable at night, and she put him on allergy meds, and he was better in just two days. It is definitely worth looking into.

Unfortunately, it is that time of year and it stinks! :( My poor guys have been sick since about the beginning of December. We get rid of it and it comes back around about a week later. :( I pretty much do the same things you are doing now. Have you tried warm baths with J&J Soothing Vapor Bath? My oldest was breastfed until about 6 mo - we started on rice cereal, he got sick- runny nose, lots of congestion - removed cereal -meds for 10 days, he got better. Started to introduce rice cereal - sick again, back off cereal, meds for 10 days - he got better. One more time with the rice cereal - he reacted within 4 hours. Found a pediatric allergist and had him tested - yep - he was allergic to rice. We ended up making our own baby food since they used rice as a filler back then (he is now 26)

Hi I saw your post & I also see that you have gotten many responses of which I read a few. I'm the mom of 7 children & I raised my kids mostly natural without drugs. I am a strong believer of not overdoing it with medications, but I do use them to tweak a problem or to put a fire out. With your problem the first thing I would try is getting the twins on cod liver oil, they have a baby version that is flavored. You can also use the capsules, odorless, just prick them & squeeze into their mouth. From my experience & reading babies need the added supplement once they turn about 6 months old & this is what I did, in fact I started mine on cod liver oil or vitamin A&D supplements early on. Now's a good age also to add flax seed oil, about 1/2 dropperful a day.The flaxs is good for their bowels & for their skin, it's also high in omega-3, omega-6 & 9 fatty acids, it's even higher than fish oil in omega-3, it also contains B vitamins, potassium, lecithin, magnesium, fiber, protein, and zinc, so its a great natural health supplement all around for bringing balance to the body, & it's known to reduce inflammation, so it will help to calm & reduce inflammation in the mucus membranes. The cod liver oil is a natural supplement of A&D vitamins which also boost the immune system & also strengthen the mucus membranes. Another good supplement is wheat germ oil, or just prick a capsule of Vitamin E every couple of days & put in their mouth. You should start seeing a difference in their immune system right away. If you start slow & just add one supplement at a time, I'd start with the cod liver oil, then add the flax seedr oil, then whatever source of vitamin E you want. Also some vitamin C in water with natural raw honey or real maple syrup if you want, for sweetening, it just takes a slight amount. Many pediatricians say not to use honey until they are over a year, but I used natural raw honey with no ill effects, so that's up to your discretion. Honey is a natural for boosting the immune system & bring healing for inflammation also, it's great to get the local raw honey as it helps boost your immunity to local pollens. Another great supplement to make their immune system stronger is to add Emergen-C to their bottles, You can get it in a box at Wal-mart, there are many flavors. I would just add a small amount at first because each packet is 1000 mg, but it also is in a base of B vitamins & mineral ascorbates so it's really easily absorbed. If you give them juice just put about 1/4 to 1/2 packet in their juice bottle, or just add it to about 4 oz of water if they are just sipping from a cup. Too much vitamin C can make their bowels runny, so you have to increase it slow. Another great herbal medicine to get your children used to is: Insure Herbals ZAND formula, it's echinacea & golden seal in a base of about 8 different herbs, give them a 1/2 dropperful at their age, but after they are a year, you can give them a dropperful, & even two for older kids & adults as needed. It will bring fever down. This company also makes a throat mist that is a miracle drug, it will not only cure a sore throat, it helps alleviate sore gums for teething or toothache, a few drops for ear ache, it's cleansing & pain relieving, & takes swelling down. I've even used it on a swollen thumb that got slammed in a door & you could see the swelling go down before your eyes. It's scary taking responsibility by using natural supplements & not relying on the prescriptions & drugs out there, but I'm just sharing with you what I did. If you feel safer check with your doctor first, but I always counted it a blessing to have a doctor that at least was open minded to trying new things, but most will tell you no to everything off the bat. Also I never used tylenol or any fever reducer, I prayed over my kids first & watched them carefully, when they were 10 mths or older I used the ZAND formula, & if worse came to worse a tepid bath. The fever is a natural reaction of the body to ward off viruses & bacteria, so if you keep the immune system from working by reducing the fever artificially, eventually you will just weaken it. The ZAND formula is a natural supplement that actually boosts & strengthens the immune system, so it's safe. I did occasionally used pain relievers for tooth or gum pain. Also check your babies blood type, if they are anything but blood type B dairy products are toxic for them & will cause too much mucus. All Blood types but A shouldn't have corn or wheat they are toxic. Check out "Eat Right For Your Type" by Dr. Peter D'Adamo, it's really useful, I don't believe in being legalistic but if there is a health concern going on it's always helpful to see what may be causing an allergic reaction & therefore bringing the immune system down. I've raised 7 kids & working on the grandkids now with only natural remedies & they have been virtually antibiotic free for most of their lives, they are 35, 32, 31, 22, 18, 15 & 14 now, 2 were born premature & have no health issues whatsoever, so good luck & God bless!

My daughter went through the same thing and I am really surprised that your doctor hasn't mentioned anything about allergies! It can give your babies almost the exact same symptoms and make them feel super crummy. Maybe ask if you can try something along that route as far as meds go and see if it helps. Keep in mind, it may take a week or so to really get into their system. Good luck!!
