My son also went through this. Jennifer is right, if it is a night terror, there isn't anything to do about it other than to make sure she doesn't hurt herself. Its something that has to run its course. In the process of trying to find solutions myself, I eventually strapped my son in an umbrella stroller and rolled him around inside the house (he wasn't as violent as some kids can be, though...just inconsolable and resisted being held). It seemed to help, but it may have been coincidence that it was going to stop anyway. There isn't anything that I've heard that will stop them once they've begun. There are things that can trigger them, like fevers or a recent change in bedtime (sleeping in another bed or strange place), so if you see a connection you can try to prevent it or at least anticipate the possibility of it.

There is a lot of good info on the internet that explain the difference between night terrors and nightmares...good if you can sort out which it might be, as both have their own approach to handling them. If its a night terror, it typically happens only about an hour or two after falling asleep (corresponds with the change in sleep cycle and getting stuck in a half awake/asleep state), whereas nightmares happen closer to morning. They don't recall anything about the night terror when awake and arent disturbed by it (even though we are!), but with nightmares they are more likely to have some recollection of details.

Fine to check with the dr...I did too! Peace of mind is important. Wishing you all a quiet's night sleep! :)

yes my daughter is doin this right now - she is almost 2 (so she can't/won't properly tell me what is wrong during her awake occasions). Happens 5 out of 7 times a week. She has only had one full blown night terror which is scary as hell as she was crying/yelling and throwing herself into the wall and kicking everyhing. She would not respond to me so I just hadto watch her to make sure she was not gonna hurt herself (I was almost cryin watching her). But u r not to try to comfort them til they wake as could make it worse and they think u r the bad guy. But she usually just has nightmares. She is in bed with us causewon't sleep in her own bed. But think is phase lots of kids go hrough - except my daughter isstartin it to young i think.

My son has woken up crying twice in the past week. I'm not sure why, I'm assuming nightmares. He's also 2 1/2, I'm not really sure what to do. When my husband comes home he'll pretend like he's beating up the "monster", my son will laugh and stuff but I'm pretty sure he's still scared at night.
