Has anyone experienced their child having night terrors. I have a 7 year old son who started having these a little over a year ago. It started out just here & there and now he goes through these sometimes once or twice a week. It is very scary and we usually go in to comfort him and try to snap him out of them. Its like he is still sleeping but wide awake. His father used to sleep walk when he was a child. He goes through spells of tightening up his muscles in his arms/hands/legs and talks like he is terrified of something. Once we wake him up, usually tell him to go to the bathroom so he gets up and walks around and we can get him to go back to sleep fine. Just wondering if anyone has gone through this and what is the best to do for your child when this occurs.

My son has night terrors and it's usually when he hasn't taken a nap during the tired. He's overly tired. I read online about night terrors and it said they usually occur about 30 minutes to an hour after they have fallen asleep. The worst thing to do is try and wake them up. My son thrashes around and whines a lot, so we can never wake up...we'd get hit! Anyway, he usually calms down after about 10 minutes and then he's fine.

My first and third sons both experienced night terrors. It seems I remember them both being around 3-4. My 1st son would cry and scream about bugs in his bed. We'd turn on the lights, go through his sheets and eventually he'd fall back to sleep. My 3rd son wasn't as easy - He's scream and thrash but wouldn't respond when we spoke to him. Even if he got up out of bed, he was still completely asleep. After a couple of months (2-3 times a week) I bought him "Magic Sheets" - I found some tie-dye sheets at a local store and explained to him that they were magic and would help his bad dreams. As long as those sheets were on his bed, he was fine. He's 10 now and never had anymore night terrors...The magic sheets are long gone. I know it was just the power of suggestion - But hey, it worked!

When my brother was little he suffered from night terrors they just started from nowhere & lasted a long time. My mum took him to the dr's & he said that he would just grow out of them which he did. Does your son seem to have these terrors at the same time every night or do they vary. If he does have them at the same time try waking up b 4 he has it as it may break the cycle. Good luck.
