My 3 yr old boy is constantly picking his nose! I don't know why this started, but now he's constantly doing it. I've tried time-out and I've taken away his favorite toys. What else to try?!??!

Hi Melissa, it sounds like your little boy has found something interesting to do ! not only does he get attention from you when he does it but it gives him something to do when he is bored! I can see how this would bother you but unfortunatly the more you give him attention when he does it the more he probably will carry it on, may I make a suggestion in that I know it will be difficult to do but you ignore him when he does it , hoopefully in time he will not need to do this and as he gets a little older and his friends object he will stop doing this, very difficult I know to ignore especially in company but if you are in company and he starts to do it maybe try to distract him for instance ask him something he would like to do or ask him to fetch you something ? any way I hope this helps and good luck

give him a tissue and tell him that this is what we use to clean our noses.

This is a common problem. Try the option of redirection, make hime wash his hands or use antibacterial wipes and then direct his attention to a book, toy, game, etc. Over time this should pass and he will acquire some etiquette, he is too young at this point. I too think he is dealing with allergy issues and his nose may tickle alot.

Sometimes ignoring the problem can make it go away if it is an attention getting device. Maybe try buying him his own tissues that he can choose from a supermarket or a hankerchief with his favourite character on it e.g. Thomas the tank engine worked well for my child

Repetition. No, no, no. Do not pick your nose, only dirty people pick their noses. Offer to help him blow his nose or wipe. also 'tis the season for allergies, he may be unusually bothered by the pollens, molds etc in the air. causing his nose to run/booger up more than usual. My nose doesn't exactly run when my allergies kick in but the mucus gets thicker and more fricken annoying.
