my daughter went to the emergency room last night with nursemaid elbow and she seemed fine when we left. Now that it is the next day she doesn't want to move her elbow as though it hurts, however when she does move it she is not upset but if i try to touch it she freaks out. is this normal? has anyone dealt with this before? please help.

My son has had a couple of nursmaids elbows and been to the emergency room a couple of times and they had to pop it back in. However, the last time this happened they were trying to pop it back in and had a terrible time and he was in alot of pain. They thought they had it fixed but he was still in pain when he left. They told me if he was still in pain when I tried to touch it in the morning to call an orthopedic surgeon and they gave me a number. He was just as bad in the morning so I called and they got me in first thing to the doctor. They did x-rays and the doctor said that he had a small fracture. They missed that in the emergency room . They did x-ray his elbow in the emergency room but not his wrist and the fracture was in his wrist area. Unfortunately because of his history of Nursemaids elbow everyone presumed it was the same. But thankfully they set it in a cast and it healed within a couple of weeks so it was only minor but the poor child was in alot of pain for nothing. So keep an eye on it. Usually a Nursemaids elbow is fine once it pops back in and does not have that much pain but if it still hurts that much then you need to follow up. Could be something else. Definitely check it out. Good luck. Hope she is O.K.

Did they set it in the hospital? It could just be sore and she wants to baby it. Maybe try to give her what ever pain meds they might have told you last night. My son ended up with this after jumping off the couch when he was 17 months old. I took him to the ER and they took Xrays and had to set it like a bone cause the elbow joint became dislocated. Unfortuetly after this happens to an arm it can possibly happen again quite easily. This I know cause again when he was almost 3 my nefew tried to stop him from going down the slide cause there was a girl sitting at the bottom and grabbed his arm to pull him back up. At the time he was with my in-laws and I go to pick him up and they say he's fine. I knew better. On the way home I called my peds office and they got him in right away and sure enough it happened again. It's nothing big but you might want to try to call a doc again just to check.Good luck!
