My kids got 2 pieces each last night. This (and Christmas and Easter) provides their 'candy stash' for the year. Yesterday morning they threw away whatever they had in their old candy stash to start fresh.

I let them just have it and eat it in moderation.

Well I let them enjoy it for a while. My little one had one piece and was done, and my older one kept eating with a maniacal look on his face, though when we'd said that was the last one, he understood. But first thing this morning..."Mom can I have some candy?"

my kids get to have one item tonight then it gets sorted and put away my son will be allowed to take anything without nuts in his lunch as his one treat and my daughter as well when she goes to school, my kids are not really big on candy and if they aren't looking at it then they aren't really choosing it. They still tend to choose healthy snacks over the candy.

Mine will get some tonight and then maybe some tomorrow and then it's going to be hidden away out of sight out of mind!

It really depends on how old the kids are.
Either way though, I would say let them have some tonight, go a little crazy, have some fun. But don't let them eat ALL of it. Poor kidlets would have a tummy ache for days if they gorged themselves XD
When I used to go out trick or treating, I was pretty much allowed free reign on the candy. What I would do is pick out my favorite things and eat those that night (there were usually less than a dozen pieces of any one kind of candy) and then the rest would be thrown into a big bucket to be eaten, a few pieces at a time, over the next while until it was gone.
