I hated the Mirena IUD. I know not everyone has had a terrible experience like I did. However, aren't they trying to recall the mirena, now? Yes, it causes headaches, moodiness, depression and anxiety. It also messed up my thyroid. Luckily I had it taken out at an E.R. visit because it also causes heart palpitations. And some of these symptoms happened after I had it removed. I spotted for about 4 months after having it inserted. I guess our bodies react differently to the Mirena, but I will never use it again or recommend anyone else to use it.

It would seem to me more likely that you are experiencing food poisoning symptoms. The bleeding is probably related to the Mirena, but food poisoning symptoms appear usually within an hour of eating the food.

ive had the mirena in for 2 yrs now.definate notice in lack of weight loss since having it in but no other obvious symptoms at the start after having it put in.it took about 5 months for it to settle down and didnt have period for a yr. now started bleeding again only lightly but cramps and mood swings coming back with avengance! have been to see a gynae but they said nothing they can do other than take it out.still deciding whether its worth having break then new one fitted or just to leave it.dont wanna be pregnant again so gotta be careful!!

I had it inserted about a year ago when my twin boys were 2 1/2. The cramping I expected for a short time, but all of the dizziness, nausea, headaches, and the such was a surprise...until I read three different blogs with an overwhelming number of users complaining of the same. Some had it removed and still felt the effects for several months after. My doctor really couldn't believe it could be the Mirena, but I had it removed 2 wks after the insertion. Within a week, I was back to my old self. Insurance covered the insertion, but not the removal, which I think was about $400, but so worth it to have it removed. Glad to hear it works for a small number of people, but trust your instincts. If it doesn't seem right, you probably shouldn't continue with it, regardless of the insurance, your doctors, or what others feel is food poisoning.

I haven't had any problems withe the Mirena and I've had it in for 2 1/2 years. I do get some light spotting every so often but it lasts a day or two other than that, no period. I do sometimes get cramps but nothing too serious. I've never thrown up or gotten sick after eating. I like it.

well I am not sure if I want to deal with cramps for six months!!!! Some of the cramps that I have had have been severe enough to make me sick to my stomach!!! Almost to the point where I am afraid to eat, cause I don't like the feeling of throwing up!!!

try google.. thats what i did before i did it.. i have had a mirena for a yr and a half and have NO regrets or any problems other then cramping for 6 months.. but better then what i was going through.. best thing i ever did.. be patient.. it will relax..

@Brandi what was your sorce on mirena producing the hormone OCP? The first time i had mirena i was told by OBGYN there were no hormones in it. But then, i believe when i was having tons of crazy side effects, i did some research..... i came across tons of mirena users having similar side effects as me and attributed to a hormone. I went to OBGYNs today for a routine check of my mirena and read the poster on the wall about advantages and disadvantages of BC. One of the advantages of mirena was there are no hormones! so now i am utterly confused.

I hated the Mirena. Stuck with it for over 6 months and finally had to have it removed. Had bleeding, cramping and terrible mood swings. I hated it. Felt better immediately after having it removed.

I've had the mirena in since Jan. 2010 and i had the bleeding for almost 6 weeks and cramping but never threw up or felt real sick. i love the mirena personally. i havent had any problems what so ever with it. its different for everyone just like every pregnancy is different. stick it out for a little while longer if you can. i love the fact that i dont have to really worry about taking anything for birth control.

i havent really had a period since i got it put in. the same time every month i will have minor spotting. but nothing worth using something for. i think its great.

I am not sure of all states but am almlost sure it's federal requirment now. Commpanies can not give, bribe, or entice physicians to use their products solely for money purposes. Some drug reps can't even give pens, sticky notes, or cool clocks anymore because of that ruleing. Just wanted to throw that in there.

I had the Mirena for 3 1/2 years. THe first 2 months were bleeding (started heavy, then light). After that no period for 2 years. I took it out because I started bleeding irregularly (every 3-4 days) and started getting cysts on my ovaries. The symptoms you are explaining can be a side effect - but usually it's only if those were symptoms of pregnancy. Mirena produces a hormone similar to OCP's that can make the body feel pregnant to senstitive users. I would give it a few more days and if you are still sick then food posioning would be out of question, if it resolved after 48 hours then it's prolly just an illnes . Hope that helps

I've not experienced any of those symptoms with my Mirena. I LOVE it. That being said, all bodies react differently, so I cannot say that none will experience what you say.

My doctor almost had me sold on Mirena and he was really pushing it. He didn't want to give me the type of pill I wanted because he thought Mirena would be the best option for me. I switched OB/GYN's that's for sure because I have heard so many bad things about Mirena. Very few people have anything good to say about it.

Got mirena after birth of my son 2 years ago. OBGYN said there are virtually no side effects. I was losing weight after my pregnancy and with insertion my weight loss stopped and i gained weight even though i was working out 5 days a week and watching my diet. After removal i lost 10lbs w/o even trying. I bleed for about 6 weeks after insertion. Then everything was hunky dorey. Was regular and light until 10 months after insertion i skipped a period and started experiencing extreme cramping, lower back pain, nausea, frequent urination, headaches. Exactly how i felt with early pregnancy symptoms. I was so sure mirena some how failed me that i bought 5 pregnancy tests before i was convinced (still wasn't entirely convinced). I went and got it removed a month before I planned on getting it removed. (we planned on ttc after my son's first bday) Got pregnant 6 weeks after removal. Had my daughter 16 weeks ago. Decided to go with mirena again! I'm a sucker for punishment i guess. I just can't get over that i set it and forget it. Figured if i have complications again i'll just have it removed. So far i've had it for 4 weeks and haven't stopped bleeding since insertion. I've also been experiencing mild food poisoning-like symptoms exactly the same ones you've described except i haven't thrown up and i've had body aches. Going tomorrow to the OBGYN for routine check and going to bring my symptoms up to her. But something tells me she makes $$$ promoting it b/c most ppl i've talked to that have used mirena have had nothing but awful side effects from it.

The initial bleeding isn't pleasant but is so worth it to stick it out! None of the other symptoms are related to the mirena. I have my second one in now and I love it!

It doesn't make my boobs hurt but I am sick of bleeding everyday, and it just about being a heavy period, when they said it should only be like a light period to spotting..... I go in for an appointment on the 23rd and I will have them take it out then.... Hopefully I can get my insurance back before then!!!!

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes. I HATED that Mirena!!! It was heinous, evil stuff. I was so moody, I bled for 6 months and I would never ever use it again. Sorry to rain on your parade.....
