We've had a great bedtime routine for about 18mos now. Recently she has started going hysterical when we try to leave her room at night after we've read her books and layed down w/ her. She says she is scared. We have asked and asked. Sometimes it's dragons - so, we came up w/ a silly noise that we told her scares them away. Then, she said she is scared of her ceiling light, that she insists stays on. We turn the light off when we go to bed but leave the lamp on her nightstand on. If she wakes up at night, she notices the light is off and comes to our room, insisting that I go sleep w/ her in her room. Today I did start a reward system and it's worked so far. Has anyone else gone through this? Also, can you rec. a light that is safe to stay on all night that is not a small night light?

I use a blacklight....it lights up the room just enough, uses very little electricity and you can look right at it and it doesn't hurt your eyes.

My son (5 1/2) just recently got scared...it only took a few nights to get him back to "normal". He was afraid and once I asked him enough times it was the SHADOWS! He was doing the same thing though...saying it was the shelves and then a movie, all kinds of stuff. Who knows. maybe for your daughter it is shadows too?? I gave him a puppet show...in his room, in bed with a flashlight just two nights ago. He seems to be all better now. Good luck!!

My 4 year old son went through this about 6 months ago and we leave the bathroom light on for him. Before bed I would go around the room and show that there is nothing in the room or out the window that can harm him and eventually the fear past.

Have you tried rearranging her room? I have done that with my daughter recently and it seems to have worked. She has recently gotten into the "Disney Princess" phase so I bought her a new bedding set and border and a lamp with the princesses that is a night light on the bottom (their dresses light up) and a regular lamp on the top of the castle. I paid around $40 at Home Depot for it, but it's just a suggestion. The bottom part takes a standard 7w night light bulb, but it shines a little brighter in this lamp. :) Best of luck!
