Painful gas

My little guy is 13.5 weeks old and is trying to figure out which muscles he needs to use to effectively push out gas and poops. He has been miserable since Saturday, prompting me to call the doctors office twice. Prior to this he was taking 2 or 3 naps per day and sleeping 5 to 6 hours straight at night. Currently he will only sleep if he is in his carrier during the day and is waking up several times during the night with gas pains. How long does it typically take for a baby to figure this out? Mama is tired

I did the I love you massage yesterday and today after every diaper change, and today Charlie has pooped 3 times, is burping and farting without pain and is currently sleeping peacefully in his crib! I am going to do something I haven't been able to do in forever, park my butt on the couch, eat a bowl of popcorn and watch t.v! Oh happy day!
Thank you everyone for all your advise and support!

The gas relief drops were great for mine when they were little. Baby prune juice is a good choice for a more natural thing. It was a magical juice for both of mine when they were that age. You don't want to use to much of anything though, cause then he will be used to using that and not be able to do it without it.

A warm wash cloth or bath may help, it worked well for my girls. I also was a good way to calm them when they were crying because of the pain.

I have a little suggestion, it worked for my little guy...Gently put his knees together and push them bending his knees up into his belly applying a little pressure. This will help him to get rid of that gas. mond you he may toot loud but try it it really does work! Well it worked for me. It will make him feel w hole lot better.

My kids had reflux. I suggest asking your pediatrician for an rx for prevacid, pepcid or zantac. they work great for getting rid of the pain. Remember a baby can have reflux even if they don't spit up a lot. someone described the arching - that is a good sign for dx-ing reflux. Also trying to push to a stand at a very young age - it relieves the pressure from the acid reflux - is a sign. Holding upright after feeds helps. Small more frequent feedings can help. you can also thicken their feedins which can help. You can use "thick-it" or even rice cereal - although peds are moving away from rice cereal too early. Once babies start solids the reflux generally gets better. My daughter who is 9 months is doing great on solids. We are hoping to decrease her meds at her next MD visit.

Hey there! My little girl was hospitalized for "severe acid reflux" and presented with some of the things you talk about. We were given a script for previcid and also, the best thing!!!~~ the sleep wedge! It is a large foam wedge with a sling attached to it. You strap them into it and it keeps them at a 45 degree angle. It really made a HUGE difference in her pain/discomfort. It's great for mommy too, because you can see them easily in the crib and you know they are not flipped over or wrapped in the blanket etc.... Also, if you are breastfeeding, try to get rid of anything with a milk protein...it really can upset their tummies! Its too difficult for some babies to digest, therefore it causes all kinds of yucky belly problems and reflux....Once I eliminated all milk protein in my diet my daughter stopped throwing up and began smiling (for the first time)... She used to throw up 5-6 times a day... Hope this helps!

My daughter was always very gasy. We used Little tummies or mylecon from day one and she was fine.

My daughter had terrible colic and gas when she was little. We bought her what they call gripe water. The stuff works great.

Thank you for all the helpful feedback! Charlie was a preemie (32weeks) and was tested for negative reflux prior to leaving the NICU and as of now he spits up very little and has no trouble burping. He is able to get the farts out, it is just usually coupled with a shrill scream when he does. I hate that he is in pain! We were using Gripe water for a short time, but our doctor told me that she didn't recommend it because she has seen it land babies in the ER from it, so I am afraid to try it again. I have been using Mylicon, and I will look for a baby antacid - I didn't know that they made those! We had his bed propped up when he first came home, but I took it down a few weeks ago maybe I should prop it back up. I also tried the I love you massage when he ate last and it was the happiest I have seen him since Halloween! It was temporary, but its a start! Does anyone know when he may grow out of this? Thank you all for all your helpful advice! I just joined today, and it has already proven to be very helpful!

Yes Lisa I also used this! And agree with you 100% My twins were born at 31 weeks and the same thing they were great in the hospital...at home a defferent story! I also had them on Soy ( lol yes it is a million dollar formula) as I did for my little girl due to the fact she was just not accepting the milk! Gripe water was a blessing and sometimes the things that people are so afraid of but have been around for years are the best remedy :)

We used Gripe water during my daughter's early issues, but she seemed to grow inured to it after a while. Still it was effective for us for a couple of months, so definitely give it a shot :)

I have 2 year old identical twin girls. They were born at 26 weeks. Everything was fine and dandy when they were in the hospital but soon the nightmare began once they were home. We had long long crying spells and both girls had problems going to the bathroom. The doctors treated them for reflux. That didn't seem to help out that much. We did find out that they were lactose intolerant. We switched from breast milk to, soy, then to aluminum (the million dollar formula). That helped out a lot with the bowl problems, but the colic and gas (or lack of) was still an issue. The doctors didn't have many answers. I then had a really nice older woman that told us about the miracle remedy. It is call Gripe Water. When the girls were really little I could only find it at one pharmacy. But now they have it at Baby's R Us. It was great. I took it to the pediatrician and they said it was perfectly safe. Actually a year later, one of the pediatrician in our practice contacted me to find out the name of it so she could try it with her newborn. She loved it as much as I did. Gripe water can be used for colic, upset tummies, gas, and teething. I highly recommend it!! Good luck and I hope your little one feels better and I hope you get some rest:)

I agree with Tara on this one. Now my daughter was a 26 week premi [now 5 yrs old] and premies get cholic and reflux at a much higher rate than average term babies. However, with the fact that he prefers the angle to sleep, I have to say that it sounds a lot like reflux to me as well.

If Tara's suggestions don't make a huge difference, though i think they will, I would suggest a baby ant-acid. They have lots of different brands out there and you might have to try several to find one that works best with your son. We went thru 3 or 4 before using the Little Tummies brand. That worked best with my daughter and was given orally with a dropper. They usually give a standard dosage on the box, but if the reflux is recurrent or unusually painful don't be afraid to give doses sooner or even a little larger than recommended.

Remember you are using a base to neutralize an acid, so the only remnants are salt and water which is safe for a baby. Hope you have better success.

Also, if he's truly constipated try giving him Karo syrup. A tablespoon after each meal will usually work. Failing that, water down some prune juice. Always loosened my kiddo up :)

Are you sure it is gas or is it reflux? The reason I ask is because the two can look similar. With my children doing the bicycle with thier legs and leg presses ( simialr to when you pull up thier legs to do a diaper change but bend the knees followed by a clockwise massage of the belly with extra downward rubs ( little pressure) on the right side of the stomach .. that made them feel better when it was gas. My son had a significant case of reflux, and the big item with that was he would arch his back when he ate as scream an "I'm in pain" scream. Reflux also becomes an issue typially around 3 months , so you are in the window and him only sleeping in his carrier seems like that might be becuase he is more upright. Try getting a reflux wedge , or putting lifts under two legs of his crib to make an incline. Also feed him in a more upright position and keep him upright for 30 min after eating. Those are the basics for reflux.

Hi Sandee!

I am new to this site and wow I love it! I have twins and a three year old so it is nice to know that advice is just around the corner! Carter my little boy (twin) when he was about the same age he is 1yr 7month now he had this same problem and it was so rough. The docs had no answers but oval and such. I actually ended up taking him to se an ostiopath. She explained to me that because of the way he was in my peilvis before birth thisis why he was having such a hard time passing gas and having a bowel movement! I was not a big believer in the hole idea but desprite I tried. After his treatment that evening I could hear his belly moving and in the middle of the night sure enough he was tooting it up! A day after he had a bowel movement and the poor thing was so relieved! She also taught me the I Love You massage and it works like a charm I am pretty sure you can find how to do this on line as to explain it will be a little difficult. I hope all works out nad good luck! :)
