try feeding him a little bit at a time this way he is not getting so much air into his stomach, when he is feeding try burping him more, warm baths after feeding help as well.

try getting liquid peppermint extact (i got mine from the craft store, for cooking. it was a VERY little jar for 25 cents) and you get a tooth pick dip it into the peppermint( a drop is to much) and then stir it in your sons already made bottle. its kinda diff from the tea because it works with the food. i know that helped my son A LOT! or a little worm pack on his tummy. i know this sounds horrible but my friend got me a perfect one from i think slumber partys. it was just a small heart that was perfect.

have you asked your doc about reflix? My son was doing the same exact thing, there were times out of no where he would scream of pain, and now he is given medicine. You might want to tell the doc about it.

It is an infection, my son also had it at 3 months and you need medication from your doctor, it's a liquid prescription and after 2 days you will see a whole new baby, the baby is not eating because of it and the baby will be very irritable until he gets the proper meds, there is no natural way to do it, I tried.

If he's throwing himself around during feeds and arching his back then he is having a serious attack of gas! This happens to my son a lot and it's never pleasant for them but really all you can do is try to ease the gas...bounce, rock, burp...whatever you can to get the gas out. It sucks, but it will get better and easier. If you're breast feeding then I'm not sure what to tell you...if you're bottle (formula) feeding then try switching his formula brand. I found the parents choice (walmart) formula to be the best and easiest on my son's digestive system.

Melanie - honey is very very dangerous for their stomach and should never be given until they are at least 12 months its one of the few foods they have to avoid because they should be introduced to most food early to avoid allergy

try a little water, an ounce or so. Water is pretty good to help with colic in some cases. Of course with colic-it's just trial and error.
Gripe Water seems to do well for gas as well, better than mylicon.

Sounds like he has GERD....try laying him on his left side and feed him (so the food/liquid will go right to the tummy easier) and perhaps the doc will let you give him a little Tagamet (great for reflux).

Glad to hear that you may have found your answer Rikki. Just for interests sake...I have a windy little boy who is 10 now and still battles occasionally with trapped gas (although most of it comes out naturally much to his continued amusement). Although never colic as such, trapped wind can be very painful. We have a product in South African called Buscopan. It's saved my sanity from when my son was 3 months old. I also give him pro-biotics which really help his system process the over production of wind causing bacteria in his bowels.

I had 2 sons with colic, one for 3 months and the other for 6 of the longest months. If you are breastfeeding you might want to try a couple of times using a bottle for sensitive babies,I found my one son did better because the formula was consistant and my breast milk changed with what I ate. My other son was colicy but when he got older he had a lot of ear infections and I often wondered if he could have had them during his colicy times because drs would would just say hes colicy without checking anything else and I just wonder if it could have been probably an underlining problem. Remember it only seems like forever he will do better soon just keep trying different things, you can do it!!!! Sandee Nacc :)

Try a soy formula. My daughters all had the same problem until I switched the formula. Sometimes babys stomach can not break down other formulas and causes some uncomfortability.

Go to the chemist and get a product called Infacol you give him a few drops before a feed or you can even put it straight into a bottle and that will help him with the wind coz my son was the same and so we tried the infacol and that help he no longer had bad wind pains aftera feed. Also i take it he's bottle fed try changing his formula but don't do both at once try one first for a few weeks if it doesn't work then try the other. Another thing you could try is massage an his tummy go to you local Maternal & Child Health Centre and ask for some massge tips, or even google it then you can get a print out. I can try explain it to you but unless there is a diagram it wont make much sense to you. You could even try some gentle massage all over before a feed which will help relax him as well or a warm soothing bath followed by a feed. Both those things will help him relax which in turn should make feed time easier also when he's having a feed go somewhere very quiet and possibly dark so there is not too much for him to look at. You'll be stuck at home for a while until you get into a routine but once its all worked out you'll be fine and so will he.
I hope i haven't confused you too much.

Change formula, obvisouly your baby is having a hard time with his tummy...I had the same problem an it was bad so I changed to "Goodnature", used formulas that were not thick based. Thin milks soy base is good, also skim milk is good. And most of all they need to be berped all the time. Also Rocked to sleep is makes there tummies feel good. My is fine now he is 20yrs old and 6 5' and healthy young man. I wish you and you very many happy feeding times with your son. proudmarinemom

2 things worked for us with one of our boys- mylicon drops (given before of halfway through a feeding. they have to be where the gas is to be effective) and baby zantac (we didn't get the reflux meds until he was 11 months old, but looking back, that's what he had the whole time. his symptoms were mild though and he outgrew them and the meds by 18 months). GOOD LUCK!

I had the same problem with my son. Are you nursing? He would arch his back and scream during feedings. I continued through it and it got worse. He may have acid reflux or he may be very sensitive to your breastmilk or formula. I switched him to liquid soy (not powder) and he became almost 100% better. I wish I had done it sooner. GOOD LUCK!!

sounds like it could be an ear infection. The pressure change in the inner ear when the baby sucks can make the pain worse. Especially since he is thrashing his head from side to side---trying to alleviate the pain maybe? I would be persistant about investigating this possibility. All 3 of my babies had lots of ear infections (2 of them got tubes), and more often than not, they presented without any other symptoms (no stuffy nose, fever, etc) other than lots of crying when laying down, and during feeding. Good luck!

When my son did that at 1 month, he was diagnosed with acid reflux. Most drs don't recognize it, but my LC did. We give medicine and he's great. He's 5 months now and we almost have him totally off of the medicine. Ask your Dr about acid reflux. It is very common and nothing to worry about if taken care of right away.

Does he also not like sleeping on his back and does not like his car seat?
Those are some other symptoms.

That sounds like my daughter, it could be his digestion isn't quite working properly yet and giving him stomach pains but this is normal and will go away. If you are breastfeeding it could be he can't handle much dairy in your milk so try cutting back on that and if you are using formula that is also sometimes hard for a baby to digest. I'm not an expert but hang in there he will stop sometime soon!

Oh yea babies SHOULD NOT have HONEY... very very bad because of the possible bacteria it can contain and babies can't handle it. Yes always ask your peditrician if something is safe people will give all kinds of odd advice!

Kathryn - posted on 01/06/2010

You need to go see your pediatirician and talk about acid reflux, or GERD. both of my girls had it when they were infants. The arching back is one of the classic symptoms. Baby is trying to elongate his esophagus, because the little sphincter muscle between the stomach and esophagus has not quite developed enough to keep the milk, formula, whatever, to wash back up. Our pediatric GI told us this is EXTREMELY painful for them, which explaines the crying, fussiness, refusing to eat, etc. There are several medications that will stop that reflux, and it will literally be like getting a new baby. Both of my girls took the meds (in the form of a syrup) and they are pefectly healthy big girls now. Also, in the meantime, have you tried adding a little rice cereal to the formula or pumped milk. Because adding that little bit of "weight" to the feeds helps them stay down better. Please see your doctor soon and give your precious son and yourself some relief! The meds work pretty quickly too, within a week at the most.
p.s. my oldest daughter vomited a lot after feeding and arched her back and cried...my youngest daughter had no spit up at all and no arching back, but she screamed a lot and still had the GERD.
Good luck!!

...............which is why there is a pinned thread (**ALL MEMBERS: PLEASE READ**) telling moms to consult their child's doctor before implementing any advice garnered from CoM forums.

People are going to give the advice that they think is best suited from their personal experiences, some of it will NOT be good advice.

It IS the job of the parent to make informed decisions regarding the care of their child by doing their research and consulting with professionals before implementing any suggestions given by people that have NEVER met their child, or know their child's medical history.

Sadly, common sense is no longer 'common'.

Yes, giving an infant honey can be dangerous and potentially fatal.  This is a perfect example of why you should always consult a professional before making any drastic changes in your child's medical care, medications, diet, routine etc.

Thank you, Sharon, for pointing that out to our members.

how is he for the rest of the day when he's not feeding? does he sleep well? you may want to consider taking him in to see a chiropractor. I know a lot of people wouldn't think to take a baby in, but imagine having a sore back or neck and not being able to tell anyone? it could be that the feeding position is uncomfortable for him. My friend had similar problems with her child and took her in and the chiropractor was able to relieve some of the pain for her.

Is it possible he hasGastroesophageal reflux (GER) I would reasearch it and possible ask you Doc about it.The crying during feedings, arching of the back is very common in babies with Acid Reflex or food allergies Also the need to feed all the time all of a sudden or a all of a sudden disintrest in it are common signs too. As well as being colicy.

Good luck!

I agree with Dawn. do not give ur baby honey Honey can harbor spores of Clostridium botulinum, which causes botulism. An adult's intestinal tract can prevent the growth of these spores, but in a baby the spores can grow and produce life-threatening toxins. i hope ur baby gets better xxx

my daughter doesn't have colic, but she'll get going on the throwing her self around while feeding, i just calmly take the bottle out put it aside and put her head on my shoulder and my arm under her comfortably to bounce her a little bit and pat her upper back to her butt till she is more quiet on a certain spot i pick and pat there sternly, no wimpy pat and rock at the same time, and ihave to do that for awhile, and keep at it with no distraction, and sooner or later, she'll go from crying, to fussing to "blahblahblahhh"ing, to nawing on her finger, to asleep. and its the only way i could get her to do it. and another thing that helps her, we make a "fake bottle" where its the bottle empty or with just water, with a stopper to stop air coming through, and she wants it just to suck on, she wants the bottle.. but not the stuff inside, it works like a CHARM for us, only sometimes will she keep the squrming up, i should of reversed the order to tell you this as. sorry about that. but sometimes she is just full, and it causes more gas and spitup, the "fake bottle" is like a piece of gum for us, some of us just chew it to get our appitite away or to get our mind off a tummy ache, and to enjoy it. i give it to her just as if i was cradling her and feeding her a real bottle, and patting her back or butt firmly, dependning on what she seems to like. hope you find something to help you!

either reflux or problem with the swallow. most of the time it is caused by reflux and can be fixed by thickening bottles, reflux meds, solids before milk to line the stomach, or putting the cot upright with a pillow under the matress. I rare cases it can be causes by the swallowing problem with baby aspirating which is also easliy fixed by thickening bottles to the right consistency until it heals itself.

M daughter would take one hour to feed and barely drink anything by 2 months old she was tired, couldnt stay awake to feed cause she had to be waken 3hrly day and night in hospital, digging into my arm and leaving brusies to refuse the bottle and was just being held down and force fed by nurses. Her cause was aspirating and shes now a healthy 21 month old
