Only my opinion Nicole, but I think it's best to use a potty, it's less intimidating, just the right size for her to get on and off easily, make it an adventure, fun, lots of praise, it takes time..... you and your girl will do fine.... good luck

I never had to 'train' any of my children to use the 'big' toilet after starting on a potty, they decided that themselves, it can be very daunting for a 12 - 18 month old to sit on a big hole with water in the bottom!

Let her make the choice :)

My daughter started on the potty at ten months because I believe it familiarizes them with the concept especially if you have them use it when you are using the big one....you can eventually move your way up to that but both my kids started on the potty and there is nothing wrong with that!! :)

Same here! I always though "we will just skip the potty and straight to the toilet" because once they are potty trained you'll have to go through it again to teach them to use the toilet. However, now we are living with an actual child...it doesn't seem so black and white :/
Our daughter is 10months and we bought a potty today. I don't expect her to learn to use it but I want it there so she'd used to seeing it and it becomes "just another object" in the house and she understands what it's for and it's not a toy. She can walk and uses some sign language so I want to start teaching her. When the time comes she will be able to use a potty by herself but there's no chance of her hiking her little toosh onto the toilet without me so it seemed practical for the time being.

What were your reasons for wanting her to go straight to the toilet and what's conflicting this decision for you?

xx

14 months is a little young, but I suppose if she is telling you she is ready I would use a little potty chair or something to place on the big potty. It would be a little scary if she fell into the big toilet, and then you might never get her back.

I used to sit my little girl on the potty from 12 months, she would only do a wee before the bath, but it got her used to the idea! When she was 22months old she was completely out of nappies (day and night) and we never had accidents! When she turned 2, she decided that she wanted to use the big toilet and because it was something she wanted to do, we nevver had any fear or falling in issues! They will let you know what is right for them!

Once she's ready she will let YOU know what type she wants to use. My son never wanted to use the little potty, he didn't like the tops for the toilet seats neither, he just wanted to sit on the regular toilet just like us. Once he got the hang of it he started standing up :-( I still wish he didn't do that! lol
My daughter likes the big toilet too, she's 25 months old now and we're starting to train her. She's ready and she wants to be like her big brother.

So really, it depends on your child. Try different methods ONCE SHE'S READY, you can not push her in to going just b/c you want her trained. This is something the kids have control over and if you push them it will more than likely back fire.

14 months? Wow never heard of doing that to any child under 18 months and that's young too. Good luck, if you do go straight to the toilet at least get her a potty seat for the toilet so she doesn't fall in.
