Potty Trained During the Day, Diapers at Night?

My son is 3 and a half years old, he will be 4 in September. And he is fully potty trained during the day, he has been for a little less than a year, but I am having the hardest time getting him trained for night time. I had him in diapers until a couple weeks ago, strictly at night. I would still have him go pee before bed, and as soon as he woke up, but he seemed to still be peeing when he was sleeping. I got a mattress protector for his bed, and started having him wear underwear to bed. But he has an accident almost every night. Should I put him back in the diapers for a little while longer? Or should the accidents subside soon? He gets very upset when he has an accident at night, so I know he's not doing it on purpose. I just don't know what to do? Help please!!

My son will also be 4 in September. I put a diaper on him at night for the same reason. I just don't think he's ready yet at night.

Thank you all so much for the feedback! I really apprecaite it. I ended up putting him in a diaper tonight (after realizing from all of you that it is normal still), so it looks like I will be getting a full night of sleep tonight :)

Keep him in the diapers (or a pull up) at night until he can go at LEAST a week straight dry every night. He's perfectly normal. Some kids are still wetting the bed at 8 and some are dry through the night before turning 2. Both ends of the spectrum are perfectly normal.

Night time 'potty training' is a bladder development issue since you can't control what you do or don't do while you are sleeping.

my daughter is 3, 4 in june, and she still wears a diaper at night, and only at night. she sleeps like a rock. we could run a train through her room and she would wake up. my neighbors little girl wore a diaper at night until she was 4.5. she started staying dry at night and they switched her to undies and have had no problems since.. i read the typical age for kids to be trained at night is 5. give or take a few months here or there. i am totally fine with her wearing a diaper at night, i have a 2 yr old boy, and our 3rd is due in 4 weeks, so i am not too keen on getting up at night. also, i was told to make the bed, then put the bed protector on, then make the bed ontop of the bed protector so that way if they do have an accident you can take the pee sheets off and have a ready made bed!

Thank you so much! I think I am going to do that. I feel bad because I know he wants to be in the big boy underwear at night, I just dont think he is ready. And I feel that is totally ok. He is only 3! Thank you so much for the advice!

I kept my son in diapers at night and at nap time after he learned to use the potty during wake times. I believe that wetting the bed has more to do with hysical maturity then mental maturity. I wet the bed until I was 11. I played hard, I slept even harder. I just did not wake up! Put him in a diaper and after he consistently stays dry for several weeks, then make the switch to big boy pants. HTH! And blessings to you!

We've been putting our newly day trained daughter into underwear with a pull up over top. So if she does have an accident we aren't doing middle of the night sheet changes, but it still feels like undies to her. She has started waking up when she needs to go, but she's not perfect yet.
