Potty Training

I like the game idea, thanks for the support!  :)  We are at the very beginning of our potty training experience so I'm sure we'll have time to get used to the public toilets.  For now I'm just going to let him wear a pull up when we run errands (so that accidents don't require cleaning the carseat, that was bad enough once) and then we'll just make sure he goes the minute we get home.  Today he kept his pull up dry all morning!

i no its hard but u need to be tough in public and not shy him away from the toilets, as this will only make it worse in the long run and then ull have a massive prob on ur hands. i would say let him use the big toilets, or use the potty in the public toilets, let him see u using the public toilets, reard with treats and also do something fun in the public toilets, like make it into a game. I used to play a game to see who can pee for the longest time, sounds silly but my lil boy loved the game and actually wanted to go to the toilet more frequently lol.

Please perserveer with the public toilet thing as one day when he is ready he will use it xx All the best xx

Danielle's advice is good. Hey, industrial toilets in public places scare me! And no wonder - they're gross!

We're still on Potty Training 101, so he sits.  I'm not even going to mention standing for awhile!  :)  Daddy will have to teach him that one anyway.

I'm not sure what it is about the public toilets that he is afraid of.  I tried suggesting he wait outside while I flush (after I used the potty) but he wasn't keen on that either.  He starts getting worked up just entering the bathroom and then really ramps up once we go into the stall.  I think he's just wary of the whole public bathroom experience.

Is he standing or sitting? We carried a fold-up toliet seat with us when we went out and also covered the automatic flusher with a washcloth so it didn't  flush mid go.

Take spare clothes and find out what he is afraid of.  If it is the noise, then let him leave the stall and flush after he does.... that was my son's concern.

Thanks everyone for the advice!  We do have the fold up toilet seat, but he said he was just scared of the potty.  Fortunately we haven't encountered any auto flush ones yet, but now I'll know to watch out and what to do.  :)
The potty chair in the car is an interesting idea, I might try that as he is rather fascinated with the "baby potty" but at home he treats it more like a toy than a toilet.  And I like the idea of lining it with a garbage bag so you don't have to worry about where to dump the contents.

Bring a Potty Chair, like the portable fold up ones with in the car/trunk, and when he has to go, send him to the car, but make sure that if he goes #2, that there is a liner in the potty (garbage bag) so you can just throw, the liner out in the trash can! It is more sanitary that way too than public rest rooms.It really helps when you are at a park! Hope this helps.

I'm even scared of those automatic flush toilets sometimes! But thanks for the advice everyone - I am getting serious about potty training my 2 year old next week and hadn't gotten far enough to even think about the public toilet dilemna yet. But now I can be prepared. I did see at my local Kohl's that they had a mini toilet in the family bathroom for the toddlers... something to keep an eye out for.

Hi, i have a 3 yr old. he was having trouble with the toilets too. i told him it was a magic one were he don't have to touch it, and he was fine with them after that. he is liking the toiltets, and the automatic taps too.

When my kids were training they were afraid to go in public restrooms too because many of the toilets are automatic flushing and it doesn't register their small bodies so it flushes while they are sitting on it. I would cover over the sensor with my hand so it registered that someone was there and took it away when they were ready. It helped them to know they wouldn't get flushed. You could also keep one of those inflatable potties in your car until he is more comfortable. I have heard that done before.

My daughter did this too but i just made our trips out short when she came until she got over it. Now she wants to go everywhere we go. Which is to funny because my now 2 year old son won't go at home but will go everytime his sister goes when we are out. goodluck.

My daughter had issues with the automatic flush. I let her do it by herself (as there's normally a little button for them to do it). I also would get all excited when it would flush and let her know that that is what the toilets do. I didn't want to mess with a portable toilet seat, so I'd use the disabled stall and my daughter would hang on to the rail. She likes that and thinks she's a big girl.

My little girl was also afraid. She was afraid of the automatic flush. Someone recommended that I put a post it note over the sensor when we are out so it doesn't flush if she moves the wrong way. Just see how that goes....

Hi my name is Edith I have a 2yr 11 month boy. He started when he was 2 he was afraid too.

They have this portable toilet seats.. they fold in four and it's so easy to carry out. They usually have them in Babies R'Us, Target, Walmart. Also when he needs to pee I make him stand in the toilet seat and he thinks it's fun. It only took us about a month to potty train..
