pressure from pediatrician to wean breastfeeding

I have an 11 mo old daughter. At her 12 month check up, I mentioned we have been having trouble with naps and going to sleep at night. Our pediatrician suggested I work on weaning night feeding because if she isn't weaned completely by 18 months, we will have a much harder time trying to fix sleeping issues. I plan to breastfeed for two years. But whnever I mention anything like that, e pediatrician seems to not agree with my decision. I have been gettng a lot of pressure lately from family and sometimes my husband as well. I guess I'm wondering how to deal with this, and if I AM doing something wrong.

I also nursed through my son's entire 18 month check up (a woman doctor was filling in for the regular ped and he was terrified of women) and the doctor thought it was the best thing ever.

I nursed my son to sleep for every nap and bedtime (didn't always fall asleep nursing at night though) til we weaned at 3. He night weaned at 2 with no issues.... we also co-sleep and he's almost 5. We have to co-sleep until I move to where he has a room of his own. He's slept through the night, every night (except when scared (rare), sick (rarer), or he has to pee (rarest)) since he was 2.

I will say that my pediatrician and doctor that i work with have both told me there is no evidence that shows that nursing after the age of 1 has any health benefit for the child... but they would never DISCOURAGE anyone from breast feeding.... that is a personal choice and if your personal choice is to continue nursing until age 2 that is your choice.

That was the same type of problem that I had with my pediatrician, it wasn't that he was telling me that I had to wean but said that I could wean. So I just stopped talking to him about the fact that I was still breastfeeding. My daughter weaned on her own at a little over 2. You are not doing anything wrong though, and if you are getting pressure from your family then I would find a more supportive doctor. Or do as Jodi said question him on why he is right and why the World Health Organization is so wrong!

Get a paediatrician who knows what they're talking about.

Suggest to your pediatrician that he get up to date with the World Health Organisation recommendations.

Tell him the AAP also recommends that "Breastfeeding should be supported by your physician for as long as it is the right choice for you and your baby."

Or you could tell him to f off.

I forgot to mention we cosleep. If that makes a difference.
