Public Potty Training

My almost 3 yo is doing very well with potty training when we are at home. Our problem is when we are running errands, at grandma's, or eating out, he seems frightened of the public restrooms. We usually try to potty before we leave , of course, but sometimes we are gone several hours. We have trained him using a potty seat ON our regular toilet, so we just pack a seat with us in our backpack. Also, at what age/size is it reasonable to try transitioning him to not using the potty seat???

My son hasn't used the potty seat since he was about 2 1/2 but he was also potty trained at 26mo's. So we used it for the 1st 4-6mo's and then got rid of it. To get them comfortable in public I would sit them sideways on the toilet seat so they had no fear of falling in. Also if he doesn't like the automatic flushes place a piece of toilet paper over the sensor and it won't go off till u remove it. I would also maybe start trying to have him stand in public always worked for us.
