Pull-ups: Helpful or not?

I've heard conflicting advice about using pull-ups while potty training. I was wondering if they helped any of you or slowed the process down more and what kinds you tried. What's your story?

i only let them use it when we go out.. and during bedtimes, this is with my eldest, tried to communicate with him more, like when i say " if u want to poo-poo" just say it! and he knows what poo-poo is anyway..

Hi brandy I vowed never to use pull ups as they feel like a nappy and does not give the discomfort of pants when wet! I did not use them with my first son , my second son was very prem and was very slow to potty train after 6 monthes of trying we had to give up but I did not want to put my 3+ yr old back into nappies so I used pull-ups and they were a real lifesaver Im so glad I gave in! lol when he was ready he didnt need or want them. When I had my daughter I aproached potty training in a more relaxed way , and again ended up using pull-ups as she had problems with her poo.
I think it depends on the child as to weather they are a help or not , good luck

They are great for outings and mastering the pooping. But, with my boys (challenging anyway), I found them to be more of a hinderance while mastering the peeing. Even with the cool sensation kind, they still used them like a diaper. Once, the pooping was mastered, they went into the washable (Gerber?), rubber training pants. When the peeing was mostly mastered, into underpants and haven't looked back.

Personally, I think if they never know they are wet, which can happen with disposable training pants, it takes a lot longer. A little discomfort from their bodily function speeds this process up ALOT.

As for brand, we used the generic store kind, the pampers kind, and the huggies kind. They all work pretty much the same.

Hope this helps.

I always said I would never use them, however, my son wanted to be independent and could not pull off the diaper when we were out and about. So I used them in the begining and when we were out. I also used them at night and he was able to put it on by himself just like the underwear. When he was a daycare and at home he was only in underwear so he could feel it. I think used in the right way they can be helpful but they are just like diapers in everyother way.

They are helpful in the car, at the mall or other peoples homes. I would never use them around my home for potty training, why go potty when you can go comfy in your pull ups LOL.

i have potty trained a lot of children as i am a childcare worker and i personally will not use them - i have some parents that will use them at home because it's easier then cleaning up a mess or two, but i use underwear only at my home with them and generally i have them potty trained a month or so quicker at my house...i find that when they have pull ups on they use them as a diaper when they are busy playing but if they do that with underwear they tend not to like the feeling of having it run down their leg and remember it for next time. that being said, i think they are very handy if you're going out shopping or something where an accident is not easily cleaned up. good luck!

i used them, but in retrospect they didnt help me out, and probably slowed potty training for us. my kids "felt" like big kids so they didnt care that they were peeing themselves.... i dont recomend them... if i couldve went back i probably would have used regular diapers til i was ready to potty train then went right into underwear...

I used them only when we went out after my son was trained a bit better. In fact I never even used a full package. I found diapers better as they were cheaper.

nope.. if you pull up your child and it can't even sit yet, you can harm his spine! so only pull your baby up if he/she pulls his/herself up on it's own!!!

that's what my babydoctor told me-and she said that's very very important!!
