My daughter is 8 weeks old & is already up to 7 ounces, eating every 3-4 hours. About 3 weeks ago, my mother-in-law told me to start putting cereal in her baby formula to thicken it. I did that for a week, until a friend told me her doctor said that it can cause food allergies. My mother-in-law has done that for all 3 of her children, with no problems or complications. I plan on talking to my doctor on my next visit but wanted to get advice from other moms until then! Thanks!!!

Yes my doctor told me babies should only have rice cereal from 4months +
At 8 weeks my son was feeding every 2 hours so you are lucky your daughter is feeding 3-4 hours.

I don't recommend you give your baby cereal in the bottle either as the milk should be all they need at such a young age.
Newborns are known to do nothing more then eat & sleep.
Goodluck though hun and hang in there because It will get easier as she gets older.

Usually this advice is given to try and get a baby to sleep through the night. The bottom line is that a) it doesn't work, b) your baby's stomach is not ready to digest "solid" foods and c) 8 week old children should not be expected to sleep through the night anyway. There are risks ranging from allergies to choking. Definitely talk to your pedi, but this is really not recommended.

Have you tried Enfamil A.R. formula? The AR stands for added rice. My 5 month old has always been a big eater. That seemed to help a bit. He has been on it since he was 2 months old but he also had slight Reflux. My dr. also started him on cereal at 3 1/2 months. Of course you should ask your dr. first about any changes.

I tried putting cereal in Addison's bottle several times from coming home from the hospital til now and have never seen any kind of a difference with how much she ate or how well she slept. It always seemed to be the same. My daughter is now almost 8 months old and she drinks about 6 ounces of formula and eats regular baby food 2-3 times a day but no matter what she eats or how much her sleeping patterns always seem to be the same. During the day when Addy is awake she'll eat every 2-4 hours apart at night she sleeps from about 9pm-6am with a binky. I trained Addison to use a binky at night so she would'nt want/ need a bottle.

Always, check with your doctor. The American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't suggest rice cereal for babies until about 4 months unless they have GERD.
