I breast feed my 6month old son and we're now starting him on certain table foods. I had a friend tell me not to give him anything that contains cows milk because he will never take the breast milk again if I do..........Is there any truth to this? I wouldn't give him a botlle of milk or anything but what about yogurt, ice cream even mashed potatoes? This obviously my first baby so I'm never sure which advice is accurate and thought I'd check here before I called the doctors.

I have read that ideally you should wait until your child is twelve months old to start any milk or dairy products, as starting it too early may cause them to be lactose intolerant later in life. I don't think giving it early will make them wean off of breastmilk, though. My fourteen month old loves his yogurt and his nursing time, so it hasn't changed him at least.

i breastfed till my son was 13 or 14months old and he had baby yoghurts, custards, cheese and he still loved the breastmilk and he went onto a toddler milk drink with added goodies like omega-3 etc and took him off that when he was about 22months old

My daughter is 8 months old and has plenty of yoghurt, cheeses, and cows milk with her cereal and she is still breastfeeding.

I breast fed my son until 18 months and he never took a bottle. However, he was about 6 or 7 months old when he started eating real food, including dairy products. He was ready, but, little portions at a time. Too much might upset his stomach, breast milk is so much easier to digest. I will tell you that even though I breast fed him for quite some time, he was drinking whole milk from a sippy cup by 10 months old. He did great. He was getting what he needed from me and still able to supplement when I was not there. I would ask your doctor just to be safe. Always trust yourself and your baby will let you know!

I think all babies prefer breatmilk to whole milk. At my sons 9 month check up I asked the doctor about milk and he said any dairy is fine in moderation, but to just make sure if I gave him milk in a cup or bottle to make sure it was whole milk. Before knowing that my son had broke out in a rash that looked like acne, but it was from too much dairy. Between his dad and I in one day we had given him 3 cups of milk, homemade mac n cheese and 2 things of yogart and pudding. So along with watching his diary in take I would say make sure you communicate with anyone who watchs your son so you know how much of everything he has. By no means I think you need to worry, just like everyone dairy is fine in moderation.

I breastfed for 14 months, when I started weaning her (at 11 months) we started giving her yogurt (yo baby) and soy milk. She still wanted her breastmilk. I know that she was older than your son but I think it all depends on the child. It really had no effect on my daughter (she is now 3). Honestly, a part of me thinks they prefer breastmilk to everything else, especially when they have been exclusively breastfeeding for as long as your son has. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

I have 3 boys ages 5, 3, and 2 and all 3 were given yogurt and cheese and other dairy products when they were infants and never had any problems with them not wanting breastmilk. I wouldn't worry at all about not giving him anything with dairy. It's actually very healthy for babies to start eating products with dairy when they have started baby foods. I always gave my kids the stoneyfield farms yo baby yogurt because it was made with whole milk which is very important for children under the age of 2 because of the high fat content of the milk. They would chow it down in seconds!!! Good luck!!!!!!
