My 2 1/2 year old recently started to stutter. He doesnt do it all of the time and is mainly when he has so much to say that he cant get it all out. I remember my daughter went through a similar phase as well as my neice at the same age. I just dont remember it being so bad. His seems more severe to me. I have been told it is normal and developmental but was wondering how many other people have been through this and how do you know when it is not just a phase?

My son is what they call a true stutter. He almost 10 I suggested a web site it will give you a lot of information on stuttering, Stuttering foundation of America. At this point isn't not a concern and more than likely is a phase but do not by in to he grow out of it or to long I did and it put him behind on getting the help he needs. The web site will give you and Ideal of what age and how long they have been stuttering to be considered a phase or when they are a true stutter and needs help.

Please do not tell a child that stuttering to slow down it isn't effective at all. A stutter isn't stuttering because there thoughts are going fast their little minds like most people think. The are getting stuck the best think you can do is let them finish what they have to say and ask them to tell you again 9 out of 10 times it will come out smoother. If you really can't wait for them to finish or it's not understandable at all. Kindly ask them to start over again. Someone that stutters is very aware they are doing so and can get very insecure about.

My son is 4 and he will get stuck on a word until he "catches up" with himself. My husband does have a stutter, so we keep an eye on things. My doctor said everything he is doing is normal. Sounds like your son is also, but asking the doctor and getting him to a speech therapist would not hurt a bit, especially since you are concerned.
