My husband died of cancer May 26th, and I am finding it very difficult financially. I don't think anyone anticipates something like this happening. What kind of financial aide programs are out there and has anyone experienced this too?

So sorry to hear of your loss! I lost my husband in 1999. Have you filed for Social Security benefits for you and your children?

Whereas I don't have any suggestions for your financial situation, I do want to extend my heartfelt sympathy to you. I know first hand what you are going thru - my husband passed away May 4th after a 2yr illness. He was 44. I wish you all the strength and courage to get thru this time in your life. Every day brings new challenges, new 'firsts'. Some days bring peace, other days bring disbelief, some days sorrow - a whole other whirlwind of emotions. Stay strong and I hope you're able to come up with some solutions

Contact your local Department of Human Services...for possible assistance. It may be possible to claim your husbands social security. My heart and prayers go out to you.

Srry I don't have any answers for you Beverly, but I just wanted to say I am very sorry for your loss. It must be really tough, not just financially, but emotionally.

That's true, however, I can not work out of the home, my husband's funeral was expensive, all I own is an old car, all the years I worked as an accountant now at 51 seem useless. I think I have done everything financially possible, and will remain in the poverty level, unless I move in with one of my children.

He was on Canada Pension Plans Disability, and I am receiving a portion of it. However, there is a max amount they will pay. I am on CPP Disability as well due to MS and still together it is not enough to cover the cost of living. My rent is at 50% of my income and that is with taking into account the shelter allowance I am receiving from the province. Truly, I believe female widows are in the poverty level, unless they own property and there is no debt when their husbands pass away.
