I've always used Mucinex or Childrens Robitussen. You can also use honey, as it coats the throat and he's old enough.

There was more than one reason for the change in recommendations on age for cough syrup. Overdose was a big one. Another is that often, the coughing is a positive thing, it expels mucous and causes deep breathing. Preventing a cough while having an infection means shallower breathing, pooling secretions in the lungs. This leads to pneumonia. Sometimes, if the coughing is very extreme, the doctor will prescribe cough syrup, but not before other alternatives that are better for the child.

Home remedies already listed are the honey water, teas, lemon water, a humidifier. Mucinex is also often used in young children/infants, because instead of preventing coughing it makes it easier to cough up the irritating mucous, which leads to less coughing. Albuterol nebulizers are used as well, as it dilates the bronchioles in the lungs, allowing mucous to be coughed up easier as well as helping deep breathing. It does require a trip to the doctor though.

The FDA recommends no cold medicine for children under 4 (I think), but my pediatrician thought it was safe in a dosage appropriate for their weight. I believe (but don't quote me here) that the problem the FDA has is the possibility of overdose in young kids. PLEASE don't take my word for this, I don't want to give "medical advice" since I'm not a doctor, but when my son was around 20 lbs (I think) the dosage of robitussin was 1/4 tsp every 12 hours. But please, see if maybe a pharmacist can help you since you don't have a doctor. They can give out advice on these types of issues (although they may just parrot what the FDA says).

You are absolutely right, Amy, I failed to mention that in my post. My doctor did explain the difference in a productive and non productive cough and I did only use it as a last resort (or if the cough was keeping him up all night).

I have had cronic bronchitis since I was 4 years old. My son is starting with it also..he is 4 yrs now. The only thing that has ever helped me was sipping hot lemon water. Using a humidifier at night, avoiding anything with sugar, and avoiding drinking anything cold. Sugar and cold trigger coughing fits. If you use cough drops (probably too young) use the sugar free halls. No cough syrup has EVER worked for me. Before self medicating, I would definately ask your doctor what to use on a kid so young, Good luck.
