red hair

[deleted account] ( 140 moms have responded )

my little boy has red hair. i think its super adorable. but he doesnt have much hair, its just that newborn peach fuzz, and im sure its going to all fall out in the next couple months. my husbands mother has red hair, so does my moms brother, and my dads moustache is reddish too, but both his father and i (and everyone else in our families) have brown hair. so i was just wondering what do you think the chances of his hair staying red are? or is it most likely to turn brown?... i hope it stays red, it suits him so well.

Good Luck, I know i was hoping my babies' red would stay, but alas, even though their grandma was a red-head and we have a lot of reddish in the family...it all fell out. :(

There is no way to tell for sure if it'll stay red or not. I was born with peach fuzz (red) and I have red hair. My brother and sister were the same way. There is a chance his hair will stay red since there is a red hair gene in the family but only time will tell.

hi shannon, I bet he is adorable, I have 2 granddaughters with red hair, their patenal greatgrandmother is the only one with real redhair, and both the girls are a different red, they are cousins, the youngest one had just a fuzz when she was born and it took years before if grew well, now it is down her back and very thick, she can't understand why people call her a redhead though, cos she say's her hair is orange, lol.

Well, I do, have a very special redhead who is now 14 yrs old and I remember saying the same thing about how I thought it would fall out. Well, it did...and came back even a brighter red! HA! I love it.,,It is flaming orange now. I once spoke to a physician who told me that the redhead gene is such a dominant and rare gene, that once it appears in someone's DNA or on his/her head, it's probably going to be hanging out there for a lifetime. I don't know about you but I wouldn't have it any other way..Everywhere we went when he was smaller, he turned heads and ellicted lots of oohs and ahhs...Actually, he still does. He's quite the chic magnet, I might add which is something I'm not so pumped about. Nonetheless, he wears his red hair with pride and actually answers to all the nicknames which many redheads find offensive. It's all in the attitiude. If you let it get ya, you'll be miserable for a lifetime. If you own it and accept it, then names like "Ginger" only confirm that you are indeed, worth the extra attention wrapped up in having a special nickname. Hope you get your flaming redheaded buddy!

My mom is a blond and my dad is a brunette. They had 3 red headed children. None of us ever lost our red. I have seen our family have blonde babies and the hair turned red but never the opposite.

I have red hair, I often wondered where my sister and I got our hair colouring from, my Dad was bald/brown and my Mam was dark haired too - but Dads bright red moustache was a give away.... my sister and I have both stayed true to our red roots (but it was awful being teased as a child) - I soo wanted my baby to be red too, but she has gone from jet black at birth to blonde... the only time she shows any sign of redness is when her hair is wet.... I have to say though, my hair turns darker in the winter and lighter red in the summer - hopefully your little one will at least keep a red tinge.
All the best
Sheila

I have two sons, both were born with red hair. My oldest who is almost 3.5 now has blond hair. It turned at age 1. However my youngest son is now almost 1.5 and he's hair is red and finally coming in thicker as red not blond. We do have red hair genes through both of our families.

My dad and his 2 bros were born redheads, skin tones to match. Staed that way their whole life. I was born a redhead with redhead skin tones. Within the first year I lost the red and became a blone but always with the skin tone for the redhead. My hair has always caried the underliing red tones which made coloring my hair a tricky task. If we carry the gene we have a chance of red hair, their skin tones, or as an underlying color - or no red. I had hoped my kids would have red hair, one showed traces but went to blond and then darker. The other child started with blond, ended up with darker hair. Go figure. We were all made unique.

I'm sure your little red-headed boy IS super adorable! Congratulations! I love red hair and always hoped my children or grandchildren would have it since it runs in my family and my husband also has an uncle with red hair. But so far none of my offspring have it. I don't think I'll have any more grandchildren, so here's hoping that my great-grandchildren will be red-heads. The youngest red-head in my family is 50, so I think it's about time we have another one!

My daughter had red hair when she was new born (like her daddy) and now she's bright blond like me. I think it's just chance, but if you have a lot of redheads in your family there's a fair chance he'll be redhead too, i think.

My husband has dark blonde hair and our boy was born with brown hair??? :)

It's really hard to determine these things so early. I was born with red hair, that lightened to a strawberry blonde by my first birthday. When I was in elementary school, it was a "dirty" blonde, and by the time I was a teenager/adult it was brown. My husband has dark brown hair, but had such light blonde hair as a child that it was nearly white! That's how my son's hair is....but I would assume it will change to brown when he is older.

My husband and I both have dark brown hair (so does our son) but our daughter (9 years) has beautiful red hair. There has to be red hair on both sides of the family to have a red head. Our daughters hair has gotten a bit darker but lighten up again every summer.

I have a grandparent on either side of my family that had red hair... none of my aunts or uncles had red hair, neither of my parents... and then I was the only child with red hair. BOTH my kids have red hair (father is a dirty blonde)...I think he'll keep the red hair to be honest. If he came out with deep deep red hair then I doubt it'll change. Hope it stays :)

When my son was born, his hair was 'red' also... however... it did fall out, and came in blonde....Now as an adult he has dishwater blonde hair, HOWEVER, his beard, when he grows it, is red... He has a 6 year old daughter who IS redheaded...
Hope you get your redhead... if not, you'll enjoy him what ever color his hair is...

There is no guarantee that it will fall out. Both my kids had a sparse amount of hair and kept it my daughters was dark and stayed that way.My son's was blond and turned dark gradually. He stayed blond for 3-4 yrs. but I did the same when I was a kid.

[deleted account]

Clearly, no clear answers. Above all, be certain that, regardless of his hair color, you treasure him as he is. Try not to "wish it had stayed red" and try not to say that out loud. You never want him to think you wished for something different. From a Grandma who raised 4 sons...and lived to tell the tale. =)

From what I understand about genetics, if both you and your husband have relatives with red hair, then it's possible that you each have the recessive gene for red hair, giving you a 25% chance of having a red-haired child. Of course, my parents had the same chances with blue eyes, and both of their kids were blue-eyed. I thought I had ZERO chance of a curly-haired child (it's dominant and my hair is straight, as it the hubby's), but my son's hair is full of soft curls! I guess anything's possible. :)

I have a red headed daughter. Beautiful red curls! No redheads in our family at all! She is now 26 and still has the beautiful hair. She does highlight it a little now. My guess is he will keep it, it may tone down as he ages but the "natural" highlights will stay. Enjoy him!!!

My mother, sister and husband have always been red headed and my oldest daughter was born with auburn hair and it looks as though it will be sticking around. If it was going to change it would have already changed. She is 3 right now. I hope it stays red, I love my red heads!

[deleted account]

I have a daughter with red hair. My hair is dark brown, and her father's hair was blonde. I was surprised that my daughter had red hair. After her birth, one of the nurses told me that if her eyelashes were red ( couldn't tell until she was about 2 months) then she would stay a red-head. I found out that my Grandmother's Grandmother was from northern Italy, and that she was fair skinned and had red hair, and one of my husbands brothers was a red head, She is now 31 years old, and still a red head. It's all in the genes!!!

I have a 13 year old daughter who has red hair, but neither her father or I do (we're both brunettes). I do have two aunts, an uncle, my grandpa, and 3 cousins on my dad's side of the family with red hair, I also have 2 cousins and an uncle on my mom's side of the family with red hair. I was surprised when she was born with her red hair, but happy and hoped she would keep the color (it's a coppery red) and she has. Although at her age she would like to color her hair blonde but, being the "mean mom" I am, I will not allow that. I tell her all the time how beautiful and unique her hair is and that God knew what He was doing when He blessed her with her hair color!

They both have amazing red curly hair now and due to the bald fuzzy start, have both got thick beautiful hair now. It really is a gift! Go with it and buy lots of green colours to wear...look fantastic with red heads!

She's 2 I want her to know what red is and what orange is and it's beautiful! Dad has blonde and I have brown, Nana has orange hair, so does 2 great uncles and an auntie. Sure it does darker as they get to their teens but its orange now and you can't buy it in bottle.

My oldest son was born with red hair, red eyebrows and red eyelashes. He is now 40 years old and still has all his red hair. His Memaw(My Mom) had red hair, I'm a natural blonde and so is his Dad. His younger brother has a strawberry blonde shade and all of his kids have blonde hair. Your son will probably keep his red hair. Take a close look at his eyebrows and eyelashes. If they are red then he will be a red-head for life.

Well I have two brothers and one sister. One brother redhead, one dark and my sister redhead. There was red hair on both sides from my mom and my stepdad. I have dark hair (grey now), but was born with white blonde hair and my husband has dark hair although he has a cousin with red hair. We have three children, eldest was born with dark hair - still dark at 29, middle was born with orangy red hair and is now a more muted red (beautiful) colour at 26 and the youngest was born with almost black hair and it is still like that at 22. I think as some of the others said, if the eyelashes and brows are reddish the chances are that the hair will stay some shade of red.
