my little boy has red hair. i think its super adorable. but he doesnt have much hair, its just that newborn peach fuzz, and im sure its going to all fall out in the next couple months. my husbands mother has red hair, so does my moms brother, and my dads moustache is reddish too, but both his father and i (and everyone else in our families) have brown hair. so i was just wondering what do you think the chances of his hair staying red are? or is it most likely to turn brown?... i hope it stays red, it suits him so well.

My little guy is almost 7 months. He doesn't have much hair still but what he has is very red!! My husband's hair is jet black and I'm blonde. His mother and sister have red hair, but hubby and my dad have red in their beards. Was kinda hoping my boys hair would go darker but no chance of that happening. I reckon you'll probably end up with a red head too. They are very adorable!! My little Declan also has bright blue eyes!!

my boys is red headed, as his hair has thickened it is more noticeable, his dad was a copper ginger as a child, my dad is strawberry blonde and in the sun mine shines ginger tints, his dad darkened to brown, but his body hair is the same colour as my boys. but my boy has ginger eye lashes and brows, which i keep thinking makes his face look dirty due to the shade..lol. suits him though. :o) so chances are he will stay ginger until his adulthood, i'm guessing my boy will. although his sister and brother are concerned he is going to get bullied as a school child. i guess time will tell for us all. :o)

Neither of my parents have red hair, and my sister, brother and I all have different shades of red hair. We too have relatives who had it. So, there is a very good chance that he will keep the red hair. It may turn brown the older gets as an adult, but for his child/teen/young adult years, I wouldn't worry about it.
(My sister is 46 - still has strawberry blonde) (My brother is 45 - still has copper red ) (I'm 41 - I used to have more of an auburn color...but the older I am getting the more it is turning brown w/red high lights.

Hope I could answer your question.

With there being red hair on both sides of the families, its very possible that the baby will keep it. Which me and my husband are from families with dark brown hair but normally the majorities of the babies in the family are blond and the hair changes colors as they get older at differing rates. Its just one of those things you have to wait and see on. I dont think there is a way to know beforehand other then to look at the genetics.

Nellie: i am not worried about what colour his hair will be, and i am happy that he is healthy, and will love him no matter what colour his hair ends up being. this was more for fun, just wondering what colour it'll be when he grows up... and a lot of people have responded with what colour their childrens hair is. ive read way too many sad, angry and upset posts lately that i thought i would start one thats a little lighter in subject matter... sorry if you took it the wrong way, but i figured we all needed a break from the usual my husband doesnt help out / my newborn doesnt sleep / my toddler wont stop screaming...

I had two children with firey red hair and it didn't change. My son has a beautiful daughter who looked quite red when born. The brown is more dominant now but in the sun she still has the beautiful red highlights like her grandma :)

My daughter was born with a full head of dark hair (almost black) and now has a beautiful red/auburn color. We get comments on it everywhere we go, especially since I have dark brown hair and my husband has black hair. We have no idea where it came from!

My son was born toe-head blond, but it is turning more dark blond now that he's getting older (he's almost 4 now). My husband's was the same way (I've seen it in pictures). He was very blonde as a young boy, started darkening as a young man and was totally brown by the time I met him. I myself had strawberry blonde hair when I was born, but it turned in to the complete blonde I am today very quickly. It's really just luck of the draw.

I haven't read all the responses but there's a good chance that he could have red hair. The gene that causes red is a recessive gene and so in order for him to have it he needs to have 2 of the gene. You said that your MIL is a red head so she carries 2 of the gene and passed one on to your husband. Your mother more than likely carries a red gene but her brother was the one that got both recessive genes from your grandparents, so she probably passed one on to you or your father did. So, if your DH is carrying one recessive gene and you are carrying the other, there's a 25% chance that you could have a red headed baby. Hope that makes sense.

I have red hair. My daughter and son have dark hair like their father. My sons started as white blond. My granddaughter who is 1/2 Korean has alot of red highlights. Your son might not keep the red but remember to take a lock of hair for a treasure. Its well worthit. Also if he doesn't have red hair maybe his kids will.

To my great surprise my son was born w/red hair also. It is a beautiful red. He looked like the cupie doll w/that red curl on top of his head. I have brown hair, his father has brown hair, my mother has auburn hair, and his great grandfather had red hair. I understand that redheads hair often change colors as they grow up. My son is now 5 and he still has his beautiful red hair (or orange as he calls it). His hair turns a beautiful strawberry blonde in the summer.

Wow! Interesting question. My firstborn had jet black hair that all fell out in a few weeks and the new hair was blond. My second child was covered with flaxen peach fuzz that all fell out and came in a darker blond. He had blue eyes and his older sister had dark brown eyes. I am a dark brunette and my husband is a very fair blond. I guess you just never know.... ;)

My daughter had red hair as a baby, also. It was so beautiful. Then her hair came in brown with a beautiful reddish tint to it that shows in the sunlight. I think there will always some red to your baby's hair. Good luck!

My little girl has red hair, it was blondish when she was born and as it grew out it was definitely red, but with blonde highlights, it's funny because, everyone in my family has brown hair, and I'm the only blonde, and out of my children I have two blondes and a red head, Further back in our family there are red heads but I didn't think that the Scottish heritage would come through, but it did and she now has the most beautiful strawberry blonde hair. With my experience I'd say that his hair would most likely stay red, maybe not carrot top red, but probably an auburn or a strawberry blonde

My husband is the only one in his family to have red hair. When his neice was born she ended up with red hair too and our youngest has red hair at the moment and like you we hope it stays that way. I think since you do have a bunch of red heads in the family his hair will probably stay red. Just like eye color it not only matters what the parents color is but what the genes are.

I would think that there is a big chance of it staying red especially with all of the people in your family that have red hair. My son was born with strawberry blonde hair, but the older he got, the redder it got. I so love having a red head. He hopes that it changes to brown like his daddy's did, but I don't think that is going to happen. He is just too cute with the red hair!

It should stay red. My younger daughter's hair was strawberry blond when she was born, but it fell out and then came back in really red. I am a sucker for any red-headed child. Both of my daughters have it, and so do my granddaughter and grandson. A good thing - they'll never get away with anything; the neighbors will recognize that red hair, and if the child is doing something wrong they'll stand out like a flame! And the neighbors will tell Mom ;>)

Both my husband and i have dark brown hair, and our son , who is nearly 2, was born with bright red hair. (which was a big shock at the time) He also has red eyelashes and eyebrows, so this made me think that he would keep that colour hair. It is still red although has darkened a little. we have grown to love his hair colour and everyone always comments on it.

My son was born with red hair and because of that and a Celtic background we called him Rory. Within about 2 months it was very fair and remained that way until he became a teenager. He is now 15 and it is very dark just like his father's used to be and curly which he straightens. I don't think anyone can say for sure what will or will not happen but I have found some of the resemblances interesting over the years. When he was little he looked very like my side of the family but now he looks so like his father and grandfather it just is not funny. Celebrate it all with interest and let them be their own person. A friend of about 30 years says I have a daughter who looks like me but has my husband's personality and a son who looks like his father but resembles me in his ways. I think there are many more complexities but it is just wonderful to see them develop and make their way in the world.

Neither of our parents have red hair (although my dad's blond hair has a touch of strawberry, and the red hair runs on his side of the family). most of my siblings have varying shades of brown hair, except 1 brother who had red hair as a baby, then it fell out and turned blonde! So, unfortunately, there's no way to tell what will happen - lol! :-)

Neither my husband or I have naturally red hair. (Mine is colored... shhh... don't tell) We have 3 children: 1 Brunette, 1 Blonde and 1 Red-head! One of my sons is the red-head, he used to hate it, and tell everyone it was blonde. Red heads get so many comments about their hair and it was a little much for my little man. He is now 6 years old and he is OK with it. I love it! And he is perfect!

Three of my four children are redheads! Only my oldest is not . . .and his beard is red as are hishighlights in the Summer. They were red from the get go! First thing I saw was Peachy hair and I was thrilled! Love love love it! I am hoping for lots of ginger grandbabies! It really doesn't matter what color your hair is, my husband and I are both blond - it depends on what the family genes dictate! If there's red on both sides of the family, your son's hair very well might stay red. (:

My daughter was born with a full head of red hair! It was quite a shock since my husband has jet balck hair, and I am blonde. My husband does get some red in his beard stubble, and my grandfather was a redhead, so our genes made a redhead I guess! ( We are Irish and Scottish ) She is almost 6 now, and her hair is not changing! She even has red eyebrows and eyelashes..and its a gorgeous red, not orange! It definatly is special!

My daughter was born with red hair. It was kinda funny because when my oldest son was in pre-school there was a little red headed girl that was so cute and my husband said if I had a daughter I wouldn't mind her looking like that. Well it turns out my husbands grandmother had red hair. She is 2 now and still has it. Her eyebrows and eyelashes were always red too. I never really wanted a red head but now I wouldn't change it for the world. Now if we could just get rid of the temper to go with it.

Hey there, coming from a very very long line of red heads and being one myself, I have noticed one thing. It really is a guessing game. lol. It does seem that if he is red now he will stay red, but when he gets older the sun bleaches our hair differently than most, so alot of times it ends up looking brown because of UVs. I hope that he gets to stay red head, we need more of us around. >^^

That said, my son was born with very dark brown hair. It never fell out, but grew in blonde while the ends stayed dark. He is now dark blonde and I think will end up light brown.
Good luck with your little ginger :)

He is now 14 months old and it's still red but is getting lighter all the time so we don't know if he will eventually be blonde or keep some of the red. Neither me nor my husband have red hair either but farther downt he line there are some red heads on both sides.

My maternal grandmother has strawberry blonde hair, but everyone else on both sides of my family has some variation of brown or black hair. My dad has black hair and my mom has brown hair, one of my sisters has black hair and the other has brown... and I have strawberry blonde. When your DNA is made up, there are dominant genes and there are recessive genes. The dominant gene will be what shows up, and the recessive gene does nothing. But, when you mate with somebody else, if there are two recessive genes that are the same (ie: two recessive red-hair genes), they will combine to become the dominant gene. Thats why it sometimes skips generations.

Sara - posted on 11/10/2010

True red heads tend to skip a generation if there are not genes form both sides. You may have a red head forever or just for a while, it's hard to know. My daughter has red hair and was born with it but it has darkened over the last 2 years (she is 2 now). My mom also had the same hair as a child but it changed to blonde in her preteens. You have a good chance though if family members have red hair!!

Well my son was born with red hair...he is the ONLY red head in the family on both sides. It was a completely unexpected surprise. From researching family history it seems that a few generations back there were a couple of red heads on his father's side of the family but supposedly he is the first male. He is now almost 17 months and his hair is still very red. It is so unique because we are Hispanic on both sides and so he gets very much attention everywhere I go. My two oldest daughters have brown hair. I have been trying to get him into modeling and have submitted his picture to many agencies and have gotten many callbacks with agencies wanting to sign him up because of his unique look. (Hispanic with brown eyes and red hair and light complexion). I'm hoping his stays red too!
