My daughter will be 3 months old as of August 13th, and I gave her a tbsp of rice cereal in her bottle before bed because at night she was eating every 2 hours at night. She packs it on at night for some reason, and some nights it was 5 oz every 90 minutes. She cant hold more than 5 oz at a time and it usually holds her for about 3-4 hrs.

I gave her the rice cereal Monday and it is now 7:30 am on wednesday and she hasn't pooped! She doesn't seem too uncomfortable but she usually poops 3 times a day!

any advice?

I would stop the cereal for now until she's around 4-6 months, a baby's digestive tract isn't quite ready for solids at that age. Also putting cereal in a baby's bottle could be dangerous as she can choke. Better to be safe than sorry!

Give her some prune juice that should move it along. If it doesn't contact your doctor.

its still very natural for a three month old to eat every two hours.. she is most likley having a growth spurt.. Its also natural for their bowel movements to change around this time too... it starts to get harder and less frequent as well. Just something to keep in mind.. though this time it does sound to be the cereal.
This might sound like a joke but if you put some brown sugar in her bottle it will help her to poop. The sugar works by drawing additional fluid into the baby's bowel to soften the stools. Or you can try adding it to cooled, boiled water and offer it in small amounts separate from the formula if you are worried that she might not take the bottle after not getting any more sugar. But at 3 months I wouldn't worry about that.. if she is hungry she will eat! :-)

You can put a little karoe syrup in her bottle, about a tsp and it will help with the pooping problem.
If I were you I wouldn't put cereal in her formula, just mix it as the instructions say and feed it to her by spoon. She is old enough to start spoon feeding. Also when you fix the cereal in the bowl you can add a little of the baby food fruits, like bananas, apple sauce etc. These things will help to fill her and she will also be less likely to be constipated.

A baby that little is okay to not poop everyday. My baby at that age didn't always either. The pediatrician said it's normal and if they only poop twice a week it's okay. However, the pediatrician my daughter goes to also says that babies bodies cannot digest rice cereal or oatmeal properly at that young of an age. She said wait until 9-12months. I would suggest just continue to feed her when she wakes up hungry during the night,...no cereal and it will slow down as she gets older. She'll grow out of being hungry during the night.

My pediatrician said a couple days without poop is alright, but past that, need to take them in, would have her checked and make sure she is not backed up.

Hmm I'm not sure about the whole rice cereal in the bottle thing. I have heard it's very bad and I heard some people swear by it. So I just never would do it. Yea she's a little young to be getting cereal and her body probably isn't ready to digest it. Usually you can start spoon feeding rice cereal at 4-5 months. She will poop eventually, but I would stop the cereal for now.

I must agree. Unfortunatley we all do this at some stage. we think we shoudl move them to solids before they are actually ready. also when I had the sam eproblem it was because my little one had a lot of winds. they look like they are still hungry. best is to see your pead. he will be able to tell you if your formula is enough. best to see your pead. 3months is till very small to take chances.

If she doesn't poo in the next couple of days take her to the doctor. I am assuming she is formula fed and formula fed babies usually poo daily. BF babies can go for 7-10 days without pooing.

It sounds like your baby is having the 12 week growth spurt. Feeding every hour is normal during growth spurts.

you should never give cereal in a bottle it can cause choking and its is extremely unhealthy, it should only be given by spoon, rice cereal has no nutrional value it is only used as a filler, and it is notorious for causing constipation. My son ate 6 ounces every 2 hours from the day he came home from the hospital by 4 months he was up to 12, we started veggies at 5 months, when he was fully able to sit up, doctors recommend you wait til 6 months because babies digestive systems arent full formed yet and are too weak to process solid foods

My daughter would go 6+ days with no poop.. My doctor said to start with solids but to skip rice cereal because it can constipate her.. He suggested to go straight to single grain oatmeal.. We did and she started pooping very regular.. She was never constipated before, she just didn't have the urge to go without a suppository. Now with the oatmeal she poops every day. So stay away from the rice cereal, oatmeal is suppose to taste better anyway.. I mix it with apple sauce and she loves it.. Good luck

So I work for the WIC program. The new recommondations are no solids until 6 mos of age. So to help her poop 1tsp of jucie (apple or prune) will do the trick.
He eating all the time,She could be going through a growth sprut. Hang in there.

i wouldn't do the cereal until 4 months. However if you do know that this may happen again. some babies can handle it and come can't

Thank you all for your advice...She ended up having a massive bm this evening around 6pm. We are thinking about trying the oatmeal cereal, a little skeptical but i think its worth a shot?
thank you again!

my daughter also got really constipated when i gave her rice cereal at first, but only if it was mixed with water... she was fine if it was mixed with her formula. maybe try a different kind of cereal? like maybe step 1 oat cereal?

I had found with my kids and the cereal it would thicken their poop.
This is what my Doctor said to do. Act like you are taking her temp. But lots of KY jelly on the end. It will loosen their poop. Just move it around very slowly. They would poop while I was doing it every time..;.. But use KY to do it that way it doesn't hurt her.. It worked every time... Then try and milk down her cereal a little bit more..

Bicycle her legs, massage her stomach, try a warm bath.

After she does poop don't give her rice cereal. Her tummy can't handle it yet as she is still a little young for solids. Giving cereal in a bottle is also very dangerous as she could choke and aspirate it.
