thankyou all very much, my son has fallen down the stairs twice wen he was 18 months, so i am a bit anxious even tho he can use the strairs safely, sometimes he thinks he's a really big boy and walks down them using the hand rail, which he can do,i just dont want any accidents, i think im being a bit over protective lol laura xx

your only supossed to use baby gates from 6 months to 2 years old, well atleast thats what is says on the gates, i would keep the one when he is sleeping but since he is 2 an a half a gate would probally no more harm then good just teach him that he cant go down the stairs with you or his daddy

At 2 1/2 honestly your child does not need child gates. Just be sure to watch him extra closely when you remove them and teach him the rules. Yes I would keep the top one for sleep walking. You just never know and you will sleep better at night knowing he has to walk into something before he can fall down the stairs.

Have you tried a gate that only has vertical slats. My son climbed over all gates except the ones with only vertical slats. Other than that all I can say is teach him stair safety. Good luck!! Boys are relentless!

My son fell down the stairs when he was 1 he opened the gate and fell. Ive tried every type of stairgate with him and he worked out how to open every one of them within two weeks so I gave up on gates and showed him how to use the stairs safely. We have a spiral stone staircase so I taught him to come down the stairs on his bum as I found this the safest way even at a young age they can learn to do it safely it just takes time

not sure about yours, but my daughter when she was that age would look at a higher gate [the dog ones suggested] as a challenge. i just walked up and down the stairs with her and she was doing it all by herself at that age. she'd go up holding the rail and we "bump" down on your butt since i told her it was fun to do it that way. in all honestly, all of our gates were gone when our daughter was 18 months old since she did so well at the steps and i just stood right behind her going up -not easy if you have more than one child, though. she was my first.

My son is also 2 1/2 and when we moved into a house with stairs when he was 2 I just went straight to showing him how to go up and down them. He goes down on his butt and walks up holding the hand rail. At first I was very cautious and walked with him everytime and still do most times because there is no reason for him to go up or down without me but he can and has done it alone also. I guess it depends on how steep your stairs are and if you feel comfortable with him going up and down them. Good luck!

you could do that or look at getting a dog gate as these are taller and just as easy to use and fit.
