My son is 14 months old and has started his screaming phase, he will also throw these little tantrums. I have an idea of what I should do, but would love to hear some advice from experienced mothers that have gone through this already.

Just ignore his tantrums as it is a learnt responce. The more you react the more he will do it. As for the screaming this is frustration His little body knows what he wants to do but he can't control it enough to achieve what he wants! This will pass. I on the other hand have gone through this twice with my sons and now after many years I have a daughter who at 17 months just screams to show off her voice. Ear splitting I can tell you, if she does not turn out to be an opera singer I will eat my hat!!!!

Ignore it. Every single other reaction encourages it and makes it last longer.

I know it can be very frustrating when your child is having a meltdown. The most important thing is to remain calm and try and talk to them in a soothing voice. For example: If your child is upset because you won't let them play with something that you feel is dangerous then you can say "I know you want to play with that, but mommy loves you and doesn't want you to get hurt. Let's try and find something else you can play with." Try to find at least two other options and ask them which one they would like. Sometimes the distraction works and your child sees that you can be firm but still loving and caring at the same time. The other thing to consider is if there is an underlying cause. Do the tantrums seem to occur around the same time of day? Are they tired? Hungry? Are they overstimulated? Does your child simply need some quiet time? Sometimes they just need some extra snuggle time with mommy :)
