There is nothing than will truely start labour, but whatever you do I would not drink castor oil. It can cause very painful contractions, but often do not cause you to dilate. It can also cause you to vomit and have diarrhea while in labour.

Maybe just stop everything...put your feet up. This baby may be saying that you need a break before it comes. My first was 10days early, and that was due to me having to take a 2 hour drive and with 4 kids along for the ride...i am sure my blood presssure was high. My 2nd was 4 days late...i went to the hospital on the 4th day and the midwife there did a bit of poking and prodding...and after having a lovely hot shower, and putting my feet up 4 hours later i was in labour and 2 hours later my second was born (my waters broke 7 minutes before he was born). My third was again after putting my feet up one night everyone asleep and then took a nice hot shower...and then into labour...i had to drive myself to hospital as my hubby had to wait for sitters to arrive...2.5 hours later number three had arrived.

I have tried everything, but the lesson i learnt falling pregnant is that it will happen when the time is right, and sometimes if you are so anxious about something, it may not happen until you are relaxed...but there is nothing wrong with sex...this can also relax you...

Good luck

Hi Beth Ann.  The recipe that worked for me was at 6: oc clock in the evening, put a tablespoon or two of castor oil in a glass of orange juice and drink it.

I was also 39 weeks and scheduled for a inducement the next morning.

After drinking the concotion, i needed the loo for a while and then about an hour later went into labour.  The loo bit was great, because i always had a major fear of being embarrased ont he delivery table!

My labour started at about 10:00, i went to the hospital at about 12, and after 3 hours of labour, the gynae cut off a piece of hair and gave it to me.  We were that close to the end.

Unfortunately, shortly afterward, i got tired and the baby was showing signs of distress so they ordered an emergency caeser.  Luckily the anaethatist was still there monitoring the epidural anbd was able to top it up so that i stayed awake during the delivery.

Brandon was born at 4:04 on the 04-10-2000 and was my first and only child.

Good luck and i hope that it works for you.

I don't care what anyone says, my daughter was born a day before her due date, I tried it all tea leaves, castrol oil, walking, anything I could think of and the only thing that worked was sex, my husband and I had sex and 2 and 1/2 hours later I was in the hospital getting ready to have my daughter. Everyone is different though.

walk, walk, walk. Walking is the safest and easiest way to speed up your labor. I would never take anything unless your doctor says it's ok.

One of my OB's who trained with midwives told me to take black cohosh (can be found at GNC) and drink red raspberry leaf tea. I was also walking and swimming every day. Not sure if it worked. My son was 10 days late.....but who knows, he could have been 15 days late, and I was going to try anything that may possibly get him out of there ASAP! Good luck!

Black Cohosh has been known to cause stillbirths. Please be careful with that stuff!

Eat pineapple!! Fresh pineapple only, no canned. I had a baby 7 months ago. Started eating pineapple (I was 38 and a half weeks), went into labor the next day, had him that night! Good luck!

Don't mess with nature, just let it take its course! I know we as humans are impatient but nature knows best, don't mess with it, when it's time the baby will come!!!

What worked 'unexpectedly' for me was a drive on a bumpy road. My daughter was born the following morning approximately 2 weeks early. The doctors put it down to the drive.

I tried everything short of castor oil as well and couldn't get my overdue boy to move -- until I cleaned out the basement! It could have just been a coincidence, but I really believe that all of that bending and heavy lifting got things moving. I went into labor a few hours later.

Have you tried massage and/or reflexology? There is an area around the ankle, inside of the foot between ankle bone and heel that if rubbed deeply stimulates uterine contractions. This worked for me with two of my children. It would be best to go to a licensed massage therapist or reflexologist. That way you can be sure they are hitting the right spot.

I know it sound weird but my doctor told me I was too stress and to relax and drink a beer. I only managed to drink half since I'm not a big drinker but baby was born the next day after only 4 hours of labor..

Also I have been told going and getting a pedicure...but a good one...the expensive one with the massage and all has put many women in labor! So find a nail salon that does the works...I forget what all it entails...but when I was about 34 weeks I went to have one and I was going to get that one and she asked how far along I was and she would not do it bc I was not closer to 40 weeks

COMPLAIN COMPLAIN COMPLAIN....to your doctor. That is what I did with both of my children and finally the doctor got tired of hearing it and induced me with both of my children! LOL. Tell him your back, your feet, your legs, and every other part of your body is aching and you just can not take it anymore....but be convincing...lol. Then just ask straight out....will you PLEASE induce me already....I can not take it anymore....chances are they will schedule and induction. LOL good luck and congrats!

I was in the SAME poistion as you except i wasn't even dialated AT ALL. I tried absolutley everything and my daughter wasn't coming out for anything! Sometimes it's just not meant to be to do it on your own, and you might have to get induced w/ the help of the pitocin :( BUT i promise it isn't that bad!

ok this morning I made mother's milk tea (lactation releases pitocin hormone) and drank it with EPO directly in the tea, I wanted to throw up! but i kept it down and have been finishing up on housework, wiping base boards and everything.i decided to see if i could check my own cervix in the shower( if you havent then I suggest you try it! feels all soft and squishy) it triggered 2 contractions so im going to hope they regulate and get stronger

Here I am again. My mom and Mother in law used castor oil way back when. The downside to that is the possibility of diarrhea, along with delivery.

[deleted account]

Nipple stimulation.. The reason why is because proper nipple stimulation (like suckling) releases patossin (misspelled) this tells the body to produce milk, but also is administered by OB's to induce labor.

[deleted account]

With my first, the day before the doc said he was going to induce, I went out to dinner, had a fabulous meal, laughed like crazy and the people I was with made me walk up and down the stairs...I went into labor that night and had my baby girl in 6 hours!!! The second wasn't so eager to come---I walked and walked...did all the tricks!! Then my midwife was feeling like the baby had been cookin' plenty long, so she had me induce with castor oil...it was great!!(NOT the taste!! I chased it with oj) I went into labor that night and had a great 2 1/2 hour labor(another girl!!) So, castor oil---there is a certain way to take it, I would have to ask my midwife, as it has been 7 yrs since that very special night! You can send me a msg if you'd like to know!!

I was just induced and had my baby on the first of sept. I was dialated to 1 cm for a couple of weeks and tried herbs, teas, spicy food, walking, sex, and castor oil... none of it worked. If the baby isn't settled in low enough, more than likely, nothing is going to get you going. But i wish you luck, i know exactly what you are feeling right now.

I had gestational diabetes. One of the things that I had to do was go through a stress test. This isn't your normal run of the mill exercise. Rather, I had to twirl my nipples between my fingers 10 minutes on each breast and then wait 10 minutes and repeat. I felt foolish doing it(I was in the hospital under supervision with a monitor on to chart the contractions). This began my labor. I did this about noon , and had my baby at 12:16 a.m. A little over 12 hours later. The process begins the natural flow of hormones and then causes contractions. Good luck. Let us know when you have the baby and what worked, if anything.

For me, a rough ride in a truck and some ROUGH sex worked! Took the ride during the day, started contracting...had the sex LATE that night and was in the hospital by 10:00a.m. the next morning!

I think walking only works when the baby is ready. I walked every day hard for exercise and it didn't start labor. Castor Oil sounds really harsh. I was always told that massaging the ankle/heel area could start it. And if it doesn't work, at least it feels nice. My husband rubbed by feet almost every day and I delivered 1-3 weeks early every time. Good luck

I had a c-section with my 5 year old and was scheduled for a repeat at 39 weeks with my now 4 month old, my dr. told me that there was no chance I would go into labor on my own since I never passed 6cm with the first prior to having the c-section. At 38 weeks with my latest, I had chinese food for dinner on Fri. night, Sat I scrubbed the bathroom for an hour and my water broke the next day - 2 weeks early... Something to try!!

[deleted account]

Whatever you do don't push!!! i tried that and lining of the wall started to push out but never popped and it hurt worse than contractions imagine a balloon pushing it's way through. 5 days later doc popped water i was relieved of pressure. Don't push just wait it will come when ready.

I am not sure why your doctor stripped your membranes so early, but if this did not start labour within a few hours you and baby are not ready to go, and nothing else is going to work, until that baby is ready to go. When I had my membranes stripped, contractions started before I was even out of the doctors office (I was 4 days late by then).

If your body isn't ready it won't happen. I tried with all 5 of my babies to self induce. Walking, sex, cohash which can be dangerous and yes, numerous enemas and caster oil a few times too. I was late with 3 children and ended up getting induced after being over 7 days late with baby #4 and that goes to show you, the more babies you have the faster and easier it should be to get the labor going- not true and every woman's body is different. If the chemicals and uterus and baby aren't ready you can do way more harm then good to you and your baby. Good luck when your baby does decide to join the world!

Walking & sex definitely worked for me. 1st baby born 2 days before DD & 2nd baby born at 37 weeks 3 days. Also stretching by doing slow squats (if you can stand it) and kinda straddling a large exercise ball can help prepare you for labor. I also drank Red Raspberry Leaf tea & took evening primrose oil capsules. DON'T use black cohosh or castor oil - neither is recommended for pregnant women. Just because something is "natural" or "herbal" does not make it safe... Good luck - if this is your first, you really have to respect that your body will take care of matters on its own if none of the recommendations help... It seemed to me that when I accepted the fact that I would likely go past my due date that's when I started prelabor at 2 days before DD!!

I tried looking up all kinds of techniques online with my last pregnancy...none of them worked for me. Some suggestions were having sex, walking up and down steps, knee squats, and nipple stimulation. Good luck, but I think they just come when it's their time to come.

I got this tip from my mom who is an OB nurse. I tried it and I think it works if done right. It tastes like chapstick in OJ but OJ is about the only drink i've heard to use with the castor oil. It simply aggitates your belly and provokes cramping which can jump start your labor.  Also try FRESH pineapple, spicy food, walking, squatting and they will tell you not to but, I pumped my breasts for like 2 minutes each  two or three times a day. This stimulates the milk which will stimulate the labor. GOOD LUCK!

Easy solution if you and your partner are willing: SEX! My husband and I had intercourse when I was 38 wks and 6 days, the next day my mucous plug came out, the next morning began contractions and the following day my beautiful baby girl was born, 5 days before her due date! It's worth a try:-)
