Should a one year old be feeding themselves?

My grandson just turned one and he doesn't pick up little pieces of food from his tray and put it to his mouth. He is usually not interested in food, and only eats when someone feeds him. He won't even pick up cheerios!! Does anyone have any thoughts on this or experienced this with their children... and what did you do to correct it??

My kid is 13 months and sort of feeds himself finger food but when he has a spoon he mucks around and doesn't do it. I just let him sit there with the spoon and play and sometimes he has a few spoonfuls.

Thank you Tara. I never thought about that but I do think because he is underweight, that he gets alot of bottles per day. You have a very good point. And yes, he is an only child so maybe he doesn't even have another child to learn from!! Thank you for taking the time to answer this note, it has been very helpful to read your comments.

Thank you so much Rachel. Those were excellent ideas that I never even thought about. I will try to implement them, as well as passing them on to my daughter. And yes, he does drink alot during the day... he may be filling himself up on liquids. Thank you again, your answer has been so helpful.

A one year old can definitely feed themselves. Both my girls started fighting to feed themselves from about 10 months on, but I really encouraged them when they showed an interest.

I agree with Rachel, making it fun really helped at first. I would also see how many bottles/sippy cups he is getting during the day because if he is drinking a lot of fluids he may not be hungry because he's filling up on milk.

I'm also wondering if your grandson is an only child or if there is an older/younger brother/sister in the picture? The reason I ask is that my older daughter had a period of time after my younger girl was born when she wanted Mama or Daddy to feed her "because Mama and Daddy feed the baby", so if there is a sibling in the picture it might be something to do with that.
