My 2 year old son and my 8 month old daughter are both sick with terrible colds. They have the runny noses bad cough and sneezing. My daughter had a bit of a temp. last night, doesn't want much to eat, is throwing up (mostly I think because it is how she can get the phlegm out), and she seems tired all the time. The doctor says that cough medicines don't work on children and I was just wondering if anyone has any good home remedies or something that has worked for them. Or do I just wait it out?

They say cough medicines don't work for that age and it is not really safe for them.  We prop up the head of bed, run a vaporizer and keep nose cleaned out with saline drops.  Making them comfortable is about all you can do at this age with what they have.  make sure your daughter is drinking pedialyte so she does not dehydrate from vomiting.

My 12, 6, and 18 month are one after another getting sick. My 6 year old slept almost all day and night. She'd wake up for a few minutes and go right back to bed. I try to keep humidifiers going at all times and is a strong believer in vicks. I haven't found a cold medicine that helps very much for my kids so I offer them cough drops and tylenol iff it's needed. I will use the nose sucker from the hospital om my 18 month old. He's a monster when he's sick so I have to pin him down to clean out his poor little nose. Good luck, we got the same thing in our house.

For the cough you can rub vicks on their feet, its supposed to stop the cough.  Ive only tried it on myself but it seems to work.  Humidifier in the room should help also. Drink plenty of fluids.  My 5 year old daughter just got over 6 days of running fever that was as high as 102.2 they doc said just treat with motrin and tylenol, shes better now just the cough.

My kids are 11, 8, 1, & 6 weeks. I have found that the Equate brand of children's cough medicine (only for your toddler) offers the most relief, along with it I use a cool mist humidifier & rub baby Vicks in a very thin layer on their chests & backs before they sleep. Also, every night until the congestion clears, I give them a warm bath using Johnson's Soothing Vapor Bath. Believe it or not, it's better for them to sleep as much as they can during a cold like that & it's very natural for their appetite to be less than normal....that's will be an early indication that their getting better, when the appetite returns consider it to be the homestretch. Much luck & I hope your wee ones fell better soon.

Karvol capsules are always good - just a few drops on cot sheets or pin a muslin to cot.  you can also get karvol plug ins to help them breath but just lots of fluids as usual.  Your son might do ok with some cough medicine as sometimes it helps when they think something is working if you get me.  hope they get better soon x x x
