Sippy cup

when we started with sippy cups, my daughter hated every one we gave her. So I tried giving her a sippy cup with a straw to ease her in (it was one by Nubby I think, and it was a "spill proof" straw), and that did the trick, now she'll use any sippy cup or cup with a straw we give her

I would only give the kids juice in a sippy cup so if they wanted to drink juice they had to drink from the cup.

i had a similar problem with my son at that age.i tried every kind of sippy cup made..lol and he wouldnt take them,i agree with the mom below to just be patient and offer him one each day.the one my son started first was the "nuby "ones they are softer nippels which makes it easier of a transition than the harder ones..GOOD LUCK, jaclyn

It could be that he doesn't like milk. My best friends son was like that. They started giving him watered down apple juice, and baby food more often. But be careful their son kinda became addicted to apple juice, lol, but as long as you still try to give him milk you shouldn't have a problem. Also you can try giving him a teaspoon of brown sugar in the milk. Whatever you do don't give up he's most likely being stuborn. Hope this helps.

They do have cups out there that have a niple like sipper. Put that sipper up there and he will drink if he is thirsty. It sounds mean but it isn't. He will know that is what he is suposed to do after a couple hours. If needed put him in a breastfeeding position but with the sipper cup. BUY one that is spill proof. Good luck!! I hope this helps.

Some people say that around this time or earlier is good. I did it to quick with my daughter and she didn't have strong lips and swallowing reflexes. She just stopped drooling at the age of 3 1/2. So...I would suggest that 9 months is perfect but no earlier then 6 months.

I started my daughter on the Born Free Trainer cup at 6 months by filling it with water and giving it to her to play with this way it is not a "foreign thing"... then I help her drink from it at meal times...she also never dug the bottle.

Nuby worked wonders for us! They have ones with handles and one without. The softer nipple top makes it a bit easier of a transition! :-)

I'm a fan of Avent as well.  My breastfed babies used the Avent bottles then transistioned to Avent sippy cups.  No problems... :-)

Tupperware's sippy allows a slow drip so there is no hard sucking required like most sippies. Also playtex's latex nipple in the drop-in bottles are great. Keep trying and you might not ever be able to do it. Some babe's refuse it from mom since they can smell that you have the real deal. It takes a while sometimes...

When my children were that age, I was told to just put water in the sippy cup give it to them and even if they just threw it around eventually they started to play with the idea of drinking from it and before I knew it they were using it. It might take a week or two but just put it in front of him and let him do whatever he wants with it. Eventually he will get the idea of the water coming out and start drinking from it.

I kind of hate my Avent sippy's - they leak easily if it's not assembled jsut right...I've found many milk spills on the couch! ;O(

I inadverently did what Brandi recommended to do with the straw. My daughter never really liked bottles and so doesn't really understand you need to tip a sippy cup to get any liquid out. We started letting her drink from a straw like Brandi suggests at restaurants because she looked like she wanted something when we were eating and so she learned to drink from a straw. So, today I bough her a big girl sippy cup with a straw that's actually designed for a 2 year old and she loves it!!

My son was 7 months when I took him off the bottle. I used the sippy cups with the rubber top. Really helps when the hard ones aren't appealing yet. He didn't seem to mind to change. He took to it quite well but I had him on whole milk by then, no formula.

I started my son on the 1st step sippy cups at 9 months, and he gave up the bottle on his own by 10 months...

If you go to the supermarket, skim through the selections...Gerber, and Playtex, prob every brand makes one for 12 months, their 1st step..

My sons first favorite one was a cheap one, so I bought a ton of them...They had a rubber top - closer to a nipple than other sippy cups, and were spill proof...I think I got it them at Walgreens for $3.

With both of my kids, I started them with sippy cups very early and they did well.  Both were breastfed although not exclusively and never had trouble transitioning. 

I started with Avent sippy cups, and I would take the seal out and let a few drops of juice fall into their mouth, then they would want to drink and they figured it out pretty quick.  Once he WANTS to drink you should probably put the seal back in so he doesn't get too much too quickly. 

Also, if you are going to give him expressed milk, it may be easier if someone OTHER than mom gives it to him.  You may even have to go in a different room.  A friend of mine swore that her BF baby wouldn't take a bottle if she was in the room.

If you don't have luck with the milk at first, it may be worth trying him on juice to make him WANT the cup.  I had alot of luck with apple juice mixed with water.  Good luck!

I found that it was easier to use the straw type. First you teach them to use the straw by getting liquid in a straw, put it up to their mouths let them get their mouth on the straw and learn to draw the liquid out. Then give them one of the spill proof cups with the straws.
I've heard that speech therapists actually recommend using a straw rather than a sippy cup..

i found that the avent sippy cups were the better brand of cup they were nice bright clours and easy for my son to hold and use with little or no leaking, this may soud silly but the way i introduce them were to let him see me and older children using the cups, use the usualpraise and maybe a reward system you may use when he does it right and he should be ok make it a fun time and not a chore he should be ok but be consistant once you have decided to change to the cups dont go back to bottles its just confusing for them. xxx

Nuby cups by Tommee Tippee are very good they are very soft. They do different sizes for different stages. Most supermarkets do them

Patience, i had the same issue with my daughter. Try to introduce it at a set time each day, i did it at night, and don't offer an alternative if he refuses, if he's hungry he will evventually take it.
