My son is 3 1/2 weeks old... he will not sleep on his back. I lay him down on his back and within 5 min he is screaming and fussin. I pick him up and he falls asleep within seconds, during the day when he falls asleep on me or daddy we lay him down if we put him on his back same thing, if we put him on his tummy he will sleep for hours, I am scared to put him to sleep on his tummy at night and I end up not sleeping well either way, either I am up with him because he wont sleep or i am up every 30-45 min to check on him and make sure he is breathing. am I crazy? is it safe for him to sleep on his belly?

He is in a pack n play in our room... but doesnt sleep with us. He wont take a pacifer either. no one in the house smokes, he is bottle fed, and we swaddle him at night.

Just like the moms have said before, my son did the same thing! I was up constantly checking on him, just like you ar doing. The only thing that made me feel better was when my mom reminded me that when my sisters and I were babies parents were told to have babies sleep on their tummies. Me son is almost 11 months now and will NOT sleep on his back. I still lay him down on his back and he will right away flip himself over, curl right up and go to sleep. Its just how he feels comfortable. Good luck!

Well I was scared about that also when I had my little boy, but honestly thats the only way he will sleep. I have a question: do he sleep with you or in another room? and if so do you have a baby monitor?.............but I know how you feel but i found it is safe as long as he has a fitted bed sheet and the teddy bears arent in his reach or that can fall on him. And if it still worries you start off laying him on his stomach to sleep in the bed with you for the night and as you get more and more comfortable you will be able to lay him in his crib on his stomach and both of yall will be able to get some sleep.

One thing to ask is if you have any other risk factors for sids, like family history or any one who smokes in the house or around the baby. Other ways to prevent sids are using a fan in the room, and giving him a pacifier keeping any loose blankets out of the crib and breastfeeding. My kids were tummy sleepers too, I swaddled them when they were small and put them on their backs but when they were big enough to hold their heads up I let them sleep on their tummies.

my daughter did the same thing--i bought the "wedge" thing swaddled her everything--but nothing worked finally I started taking her rocking cradle off the stand and sitting it by the bed at 2 1/2 wks--work for about a wk but by 4 eks she could roll from her on to her side from her back and from her side to her belly00had a horrible experience waking up because i heard her struggling for her breath because she had rolled and got her face in the wedge scooting and squirming--needless to say I deiceded at that nonebt if she wanted on her belly she was going to find a way- put her on her belly and she slept for almost 10 hours--she was so tired from not sleeping good the first monrh of life--she will be 2 a month from today and still loves to sleep on her belly!!

the doctor did tell me that a pacifier will help reduce sids because of the unconcious sucking

My daughter has been sleeping on her stomach since she was born. She is 4 months old and doing JUST FINE!!! She refuses to sleep on her back and she sleeps all night on her stomach. You have to remember, years ago, they used to tell parents to have their babies sleep on their stomach and only RECENTLY did they start the "back to sleep" due to SIDS. Do what makes them happy :) and you will be happy :)

P.S. Once they are 4 months old, they will learn to roll over. My daughter rolls from her stomach to her back and she falls asleep that way too!

when we were growing up, it was recommended for babies to sleep on their tummies. In the NICU, babies sleep on their tummies. I fought it with mine until she was able to turn over herself b/c like you, I couldn't sleep well for worrying about her. Since 4 months, she has slept on her tummy every night. Have you considered buying one of those Angel monitors that alerts you if they stop breathing? I don't have one personally, but several friends have reported loving them.

The experts say no, but My girl is 3 1/2 mo. and she won't sleep on her back either. we bought a stabilizer, swaddled her, and put her on her side, where she's slept fine every since, I will say though, she sleeps in bed with me so I can keep a close eye on her, but we've never had any problems. Also, when my parents were infants, they recommended all babies sleep on their tummies. SIDS is what they are worried about. If you don't like either answer, here is a 3rd alternative...I WISH I would have known about this when I first gave birth, but you could always try the miracle blanket. It makes baby feel snug like in the womb, and he's more likely to tolerate sleeping on his back. the website is https://www.miracleblanket.com/ Good luck!

Hi Sabrina. My two year old started sleeping on his belly at 3 weeks. I was having the same problem as you. He just loved sleeping on his tummy. I also have a 3.5 month old who's also been sleeping on her belly since she was 3 weeks. My sister has 3 children and all of them slept best on their belly. If your baby loves it, I really don't think that you should beat yourself up over it. Sometimes you have to listen to your baby instead of the advice in books and websites.
