Smoking and Morning Sickness...

I'm just wondering, I smoked a bit before I got preggers, but stopped. Then I had a smoke the other day and it took away my nausea for the rest of the day. I was just wondering if that has happened to anyone else. Now I don't mean for this post to get "preach-y" (there's another post for that lol) and I'm still not smoking normally. I've had my left over pack for 2 months now and have probably had 5 smokes since since I found out I was expecting, and only when I'm feeling really sick. I smoke menthol, so maybe that has something to do with it? Normally smoking CAUSES nausea... has this happened to anyone else? I told my mom and she thought it was hilarious lol.

have you ever noticed you don't eat as much when you smoke? It suppresses your appitite; When you get morning sickness usually if you have a good breakfast you usually don't feel as sick during the day. ie if you eat right your body will treat you right.... so on so on.... I'm no doctor but maybe when you had the smoke it stopped you feeling hungry which in turn gave you temp relief I highly recomend a big breakfast to get you through the day.

I TRIED AND FAILED TO GIVE UP SMOKING IN MY LAST PREGNANCY I WISH I HAD MANAGED TO QUIT AS STANDING OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL IN MY DRESSINGGOWN AND SLIPPERS JUST TO HAVE A SMOKE IS NOT FUN IN JAN

I smoked before my pregnancies, and then quit for 7 years....I started again when the kids were older and finally have now quit for the past 4 years.

It's hard for me to say 'cause I quit two years before I got pregnant, but my morning sickness used to last all day. I would reccommend papaya - my midwives said to try it for morning sickness and it worked....that and never let yourself get super hungry, it makes the stomach acids go wild - nibble frequently.

Not to preach, but I can't help it - do try and quit if you can, it really is horrible for the baby, and even if you don't smoke around the child, the chemicals cling to your clothes and affect them anyway!

I smoked before I was pregnant but quit as soon as I found out...It sure would have been nice to take a cigarette break! I was alone in the middle of no where when my husband went out on fire. But I chose not to smoke because I have seen very sick babies born and die becuase of choices thier mothers made. It wasnt even an option for me.

If anything Jocelyn dont smoke the shitty menthols-the chemicals in them are absolutly halacious. Amarican Spirit makes menthols, they are yummy and you dont get all the other shitty chemicals.

Well I haven't heard of smokes getting rid of nausea but I have a few friends who smoke pot & they say that it helps with their nausea. If something helps get rid of morning sickness for ya, lucky you! I was sick as a dog & the smell of everything made it worse.

LOL....Jocelyn, I smoked during both my preganancies because I tried stopping and I was getting the shakes and feeling even more nauseous. After speaking with my doctor, he did tell me that it was ok to have no more than 5 smokes a day because it made it worse on the fetus due to stress. So don't stress the small stuff, if it helps you then have 1 when you feel sick, but if you can try to avoid it then good for you. Both my kids were born healthy and still are! Good Luck!

I know your not supposed to smoke while pregnant but I smoked about a half pack a day through my entire pregnancy to help cope with stress and my son is perfectly healthy. One of my doctors told me that to quit smoking "cold turkey" in the first trimester could be enough stress to cause a miscarrage for some women. My public health nurse, who also worked in the nursery for a while, said that the babies of mothers who smoked 5 or less cigarettes a day showed almost no collic from withdrawl of the mother smoking. It sounds horrible but my son is perfectly fine. I think that smoking in moderation has almost no affect on your baby.

i think that maybe you should just keep it up if it works like really i bet a lot of our parents smoked and we turned out alright. i quit cold turkey at 3months of my pregnancy but the same thing with you is that my pack lasted me months. but i would still make sure it doesnt get like worse and you smoke lots

With my first I smoked a lot before I got pregnant then all of a sudden just a wiff of smoke would make me violently ill. I was literally forced to stop smoking cold turkey. With my second, I quit smoking months before I had her, but in those first few days before I knew I was pregnant, I was so emotionally, I thought it was stress at work and had a cigarette to calm my nerves and was violently ill again, which is when I knew I was pregnant.

Ice cold water really helped with my morning sickness... but nothing else really :( Also make sure you have something on your stomach all the time. Morning sickness is linked to dips in your blood sugar.

I smoked before i found out i was pregnant and then the moment the test came back positive, i then stopped. It is your choice whether you smoke while you are pregnant- if it is the old few then i do not see the harm, but i am sure that doctors would disagree. Saying that, I found ginger biscuits a blessing while i was pregnant and it really helped my morning, noon and night sickness!!!

i had horrible morning sickness and nothing helped me, i dont smoke so never thought to try it lol, if you think it's the menthol why dont you try mint tea or mint sweets??

Like you said, smoking normally causes nausea so my guess is that it's the menthol.  Good job on the cutting back so much while you're pregnant :)  I did the same when I was pregnant.  A pack would last me about a month....but I'd still get the lectures...

My mother said she was upset when she was pregnant with me and her doctor told her to stop smoking because it was the only thing that helped her morning sickness.  I don't smoke, never really have, but I would also think the smoke would make nausea worse! Weird.

lol a part of me is jelous I smoked menthol till I was pregnant but they make me sick now so quitting was easy.  So long as you aren't smoking loads I don't see a problem with it though everyone will get preachy with you.  At the end of the day you're an adult it's you're choice.
