Sore/Cracked/Raw Nipples!

Hi there,

My son is 3 1/2 months old, and just recently my nipples have been getting real sore while I latch him on... They have been getting really dry and peely, and have been cracking.. I've been putting breast milk on my nipples as well sometimes, just to ease it a little, as well as nipple ointment.

I also have a 1 1/2 yr old girl, I breastfed her till she was a little over 1 yr old, everything was fine with her.

Anyways, my husband reminded me that I should put my whole areola in his mouth if I can, b/c it seems as though he's just got the nipple in his mouth.. makes sense.

I'm in almost excruciating pain when he latches on for the first few seconds.. my nipples hurts sooo bad!!

Is there a remedy that would help me, or something I should do more of besides putting my whole nipple in his mouth...?? Something I could put on my nipples to heal them... I need some help here, I've been in this pain for almost 2 weeks.. This has never happened to me before.

Check with your doctor to see if you may have thrush. Lanolin may help but it it's thrush, you'll need a prescription to get it cleared up. If it's not thrush, the lanolin is good (worked wonders for me). Also try different holds or ask a lactation consultant/pediatrician to watch you latch in case maybe you're at a bad angle (happens a lot for first timers).

Check the inside of his mouth too for white patches to make sure it is not thrush. I would also consult a lactation consultant to work on your latch. I found breastmilk to be the best moisturizer, just make sure you let it air dry really well!

You should be able to find the Lansinoh at Wal mart, and the Medela nipple sheild might be there to....or you might need to go to babies r us for them.

I have used many nipple creams, and this one was the best BY FAR! Even better than the one at the hospital. Most of them are hard and difficult to smear until you get it warmed up...this one goes on nice and smooth and really feels a lot better even in the first use

Here are the nipple shields. They have 2 kinds, but I liked these ones the best, because of the size of the whole to put your nipple in....it is bigger. Also, there are wholes for your nipples to "breath" and circulate air which is very important.

Sometimes they are not latching on properly or sucking properly due to tongue placement. I called La Leche when I was having the same problem, and the came right out to my house. My son was reverse tongue sucking and it was so painful. Also I used Lansinoh lanolin cream. It was much easier to smear on my nipples than the other brands and was really soothing. Also, they have nipple cups that hold the clothing away from your breast while not feeding so they can air out and breath between feedings. they are held in place by your bra. I will find the links to both for you! They were life savers.

I had this issue with my last kid, I didnt realise how much she had grown and I actually didnt have her positioned right. When she was on the left breast, she was to far right, and vise versa. Next time you feed him today check to see if hes wraping around your body, if so move him up towards the boob he is feeding on more.
