What are you feeding him?

If you're feeding him formula the likely culprit is an inability to digest the formula.
Formula is heavy in sugar and indigestible man-made things.

If it's breast milk that you're feeding your baby with- then maybe you're eating something
that doesn't agree with your infant.


If you are feeding formula, unless you have a medical impairment, you can still get your milk
supply going. ;)

Definetly agree with Beth. I have 7 children and experienced this problem first hand. First with formula, which only my first child ate, she had a sour smell in her poop with a diaper rash and had to switch her 3 times until we got her the right milk. Then has the same problem again when I breathed my other due to dairy that I was consuming.

I think the other mothers are on the right track however he's only 7 days old, if he was premature at ALL sometimes it just takes a little bit for things to become adjusted. You should call his doctor if you're concerned but also the rash is an indication of something. He might just have a yeast type infection which needs a cream. He should be going back to the Dr any day now right ? Certainly talk to them =)

Some babies have allergies and it isn't uncommon for their poop to be sour smelling and have a rash. If you are formula feeding you may want to ask your pediatrician about switching to a hypo-allergenic formula (both Similac and Enfamil make ones). If you are breastfeeding ask about cutting out dairy from your diet. I hope this helps! :)

I have to second Beths answer it is definitely you are eating or the formula if you have two much acid in you diet eg juice fruit will give a good rash and make baby poop smell sour. If you are really worried tack it to the midwife or GP they will know but most likly its what your eating.

There could be a number of things causing your babies poop to smell sour...first if he's bottle feeding it could be the formula he's on, you may need to change to goats milk formula or something for a sensitive stomach. If your breastfeeding it could be something your eating try cutting out dairy, caffeine, spicy foods, salty foods, bubbly drinks and chocolate. I would definitely advise changing something as the bum rash is a good indication that something is wrong. Good luck!!!
