Starting "Real Food" Question

My daughter is 5 1/2 months old, and she's only had breast milk up to this point. I wanted to start introducing solid foods to her, so I mixed a little rice cereal with breask milk. When she tried it she got a sour look on her face (which I've heard all babies do when they try solid foods because it's so different) but she took several bites. When she indicated she was done (turned away from the spoon, started to fuss a little bit, etc.) we stopped and she was fine. About an hour later she got REALLY fussy and was crying pretty hard. The next day we tried the rice cereal again, and the same thing happened.

I don't know if I should stop trying to give her solid foods altogether for now, or try another first food instead of rice cereal, or what!! Any suggestions?

I never gave my 9 month old any baby cereal I went straight to 2nd stage veggies & fruits (you can always start with 1st stage) right before he turned 6 months. Rice cereal can make a baby gassy & constipated, it has very little nutritional value anyway so it really doesn't matter if you give them it or not it's just for practice anyway. If you want to keep trying w/ cereal try making it way thinner. Another thing is if you just started w/ solids keep in mind that they should only get about a tablespoon @ a time.

I have been making the cereal very runny, so I don't think it's that. But I agree that rice might just be hard for her body to digest. I'll try it one more time tonight, but if it does the same thing I'll try something else (like a runny fruit or veggie). Thanks for the advice!

My little guy isn't ready for solids yet but my first 2 have already been through this. My daughter had the same problem. I found that if I made the cereal a little more runny at first the problem resolved itself. I made it very soupy and every 3 days or so made it a little thicker till it was the right consistancy. I found out later from my pediatrician that making it so thick at first probably gave her a belly ache. You can always try something else too. Baby fruit is pretty runny so if she still gets fussy after those it may be something else. I would tend to think it is a belly ache. I wouldn't give up on solids though, rice may just be hard for her to digest.
