I just wanted to know peoples personal experiences with starting solids. What age did you start? Did your child develop allergies because you started too soon? My baby is four months and I am interested in starting her on some solids. I have been giving her rice cereal for about a month but would like to start fruits and vegetables.

I started my daughter on rice cereal after her 4 month shots because she had doubled her birth weight, and was reaching for her fathers and my food when we ate. she loves it and she does great, she gaged the first try but caught on very fast.

I will be starting to introduce veggies at 6 months.

but thats my choice, do what you feel comforatable with

good luck!

Based on what I read for the first 6 months babies should be entirely breastfed or formula fed and even once babies start eating solid food, they still get most of their nutrients from breast milk or formula. That being said, many people start introducing baby cereal between 4 - 6 months. I started giving my son rice cereal (and then switched to oatmeal as it was less constipating) around 5 months and started real solids closer to 6 months.

What are some signs the baby is ready to start solids? According to Dr. Greene (http://www.drgreene.com),

•Baby still hungry after drinking (8-10 breast feedings or 32 ounces of formula in a day)
•Baby can lift and support her own head
•Baby weighs at least 13 pounds and has doubled her birth weight
•Baby has overcome the strong tongue-thrust reflex they are born with

Don't forget to check with your baby's doctor as well. Also, get that camera ready...the first food pictures are the best.

i started my daughter on a little bit of pablum (rice cereal) when she was over 3 months, and started veggies at around 5 months. she doesnt have any allergies, except a sensitivity to cheese and milk (but we're starting her on goats milk now instead of cows). she loves food! i recommend starting out with carrots or green beans, if you start out with fruit, then itll be harder to get them to eat the veggies. but make sure you only introduce one at a time, and wait a few days before adding a new one to make sure theres no allergies. i also love baby-led weaning (google it, its awesome)... its all about finger foods, and letting the babies feed themselves, its messy but it'll help them a lot with gagging and all that. i started that when my daughter was about 7 months, i had been feeding her pureed veggies and fruit before that. now shes 11 months and eating whatever we eat and she loves it! good luck and have fun! :)

I started my daughter on cereal at 3 months but we mixed it with juice because she wouldnt take it with formula (and yes her doctor said to) She has allergies, but to pollen and stuff like a lot of people have. If your daughter has doing well on cereal, you can probably start some vegetables (I wouldn't do fruits right away, just in case she refuses vegetables later because she likes the fruit better) maybe just half a jar a day? That's how we started anyway and since she took well to it our doctor said to go ahead and slowely give her more. Now at 7 months she has 6 bottles a day, cereal in the morning and at bedtime, and 2 jars of baby food a day. Ask your doctor first before doing anything though, not every baby can start so early...
