My son is 8 months old and he got this red mark a month after he was born at the top of his butt crack. Because I was a brand new mom and he is my first I thought maybe it was dipper rash. But after a little bit it looked like it was getting a hole in it. So we took him to the hospital were we live. 2 Dr had no idea what it was and told us to put polisporon on it. A few days latter we went to our family Dr and he didnt get a very good look at it because my son was getting his 2 month shots and was kind of cranky. He gave us a perscrption for some other ointment. After about a week and nothing was changing I took him back to my Dr. He said after getting a good look at it this time "Oh its only a birthmark" So we all laughed at the the craziness and stressing about a birthmark. Well yesterday my husband and I were out and a bout and noticed out son smelled kind of funky. So we went into sears to change his dipper. My son was very upset. When I wiped his bum I noticed blood on the wipe. So I lifted his legs and saw that the mark on his bum was bleeding quite a bit. So in a panic, my husband and I took him to the ER, in the bigger city we both grew up in. The Dr there said a pediatrician should have a look at it and he was going to set us up with one. He also asked why our family Dr hasn't sent us to one. He said that it looked like it may be a hemangioma birthmark. So we were happy we finnaly got some sort of good answer to what this thing is. I've seen them on babies heads and stuff before, I just thought they looked weird. But with this being in his bum crack it rubs when he crawls. I think thats what caused the bleeding. It also bled again last night. Devon seemed to be in SO much pain. My question is what do I do about this thing until we get in to see the pediatrician? I've been putting the ointment on to prevent infection. But I dont know what elts to do to make it not bleed anymore and cause him pain. Dose anyone have a similar story they would like to share and maybe give me some tips on what worked for them?

Thank you all for your responses. The Pediatrician got us in yesterday. What luck!!! She said it looked completely normal and that it looks like its actually starting to go away. Apparently they bleed when they grow or shrink some. She told us just to put a barrier cream on it to help prevent rubbing and wetness getting at it. She used Desitin it has 37% zink oxide in it. I am soooooo greatfull we finally got to the bottom of this.

I would suggest you go on the internet and find out information about it and suggestions on how to keep it from bleeding. You can call Walgreens and ask the pharmacist what would be good also, They are so good at helping me with all my medical problems and what to use. Good Luck

I have never heard of a strawberry bleeding? I have heard of lots of strawberries on the bottom, I thought that was the common place for them.

I think it needs a strong barrier cream. I would call a local children's hospital and ask to talk to a pediatric nurse in the ER and ask what barrier creams they use for severe bleeding nappy rash.

I say this because my baby had problems with acidic burning poo that blistered his bum and none of the creams that the doctors recommended did anything. It was the nurses who told me what to use (I had to ask a pharmacy to order it in for me). I have found that the nurses are better with things like this, maybe because they are the ones using the creams - doctors dont change nappies! lol.

The stuff I use is called Conveen, its a "critic barrier" cream and it is made by Coloplast. On the bottle there is a website www.coloplast.com. Maybe you can contact the company and ask them if it is suitable for your situation? Hope this helps.

My niece has one on her chest that they will have removed sometime when she is around 3. Good luck that is in such a bad spot.

I have one on my shoulder. It has never bled (that I know of), so I'm not much help there. However, mine has faded over time. I still know it's there, but it is basically now the color of my skin.

I would ask if covering it with gauze would help it heal, so it doesn't continually get rubbed raw.

Good luck!

My daughters was on her eye so it never got rubbed or anything, maybe when you put the ointment on put a small piece of gauze and a bandaid over it to keep his diaper from rubbing it?
