My oldest son just turned 3 and he sucks his first and middle fingers. He also has a bink. Doctor doesn't think it's a big deal until he's 4 or 5, but my main concern is his teeth. I don't want him to have to go through all the pain of braces as I did. I've seen thumb guards but haven't seen anything to help with the two fingers he sucks. How can I get him to stop? Any suggetions would be wonderful! Thanks in advance...

I sucked my middle and 4th finger until I was about 10+!! I only stopped then because Id cut one of my fingers and it had a big plaster on it. Despite this, my teeth came out perfectly straight. I think doctors are right and its not worth worrying about yet - its a comfort for him and hes a bit young to understand why you dont want him to do it.

my daughter almost 3 sucks on the exact same fingers. her doc does not seem conserned either. my sister in law is a dentist and there are guards that they can make for the finger sucking,at what age i dont know. whats funny is that my daughter wants me to paint her fingernails but i wont paint the two she sucks on, i tried using this as an insentive but i cannot help that she falls asleep with them in her mouth. weven if i take them out at night they end up right back in her mouth. because they are baby teeth it does not mean her "big" teeth will be crooked. the only problem with hot sauce is she likes spicey things lol. her brother never had any "addictions' she has to have her fingers and her blankey!!

What's a bink? My sister used to suck exactly the same fingers and her teeth are ok. She was still sucking them til about 8 I think! You can get stuff that you paint onto your nails that doesn't taste nice. It's to stop you biting your nails, but it should still work in this situation.

my kids use pacifiers and so far teeth ok. but a cousin used fingers and pushed her front teeth in and another sucked her thumb and pulled her front teeth forward! go figure...but what they did was anytimes the one sucked her thumb they put hot sauce on it to help her stop and made sure she understood and all...they werent torturing her!! lol
