How soon should you know if a certain formula will work for your child? My son is 2 months and has been on formula over a week. His BM monday was green and the last two days has seem irritable. When I was still breastfeeding I had to decrease my dairy intake b/c he was gassy and had green BM.....does this sound like he should try gentlease formula?? Or is it too soon to tell?

I would talk to his doctor but I had to switch my son off his formula to a lower Iron formula because it made his BM's green and seedy and caused him great discomfort. We tried switching to a lower iron formula (Enfamil Lower Iron) and it worked like a charm with in days his BM's were solid and back to a more normal color and he was a happy camper. Everyone suggested Soy based formula but my son would just bring it all back up so the lower Iron formula was the other alternative, hope this helps!

Thanks Suzan - I also realized right after I posted my question that I was still mixing in my breastmilk - and that milk I pumped was before I took dairy out of my diet.....so that could definitely be the culprit.  Allen used the last of my frozen supply earlier today so I do plan to wait it out a little while longer....and no, his BM is runny and the last two times he has only gone every 5 days.  Yesterday and today he just seemed very fussy and didn't want to nap and only wanted me to hold him....sometimes even that didn't suit.  Though it's amazing that he has been sleeping 10+ hours a night for over a week!

I would definitely talk to your baby's doctor about your concerns. He/she can decide whether or not your son needs a different formula. My son was on formula and his BMs were always a yellowish color until I started adding solid foods. The only time they were green was when he had eaten a lot of peas or green beans.

Dont stress to much that is normal for a baby that has just been put on formula after breast feeding. There bm movement on formula is much different to breastmilk. As long as he dont get constipated he fine. As for being irritable it is normal until there body ajust.

try switching to a soy based formula and dr. browns bottles it made a huge difference when my daughter was an infant-she was very colicky and gassy, I tried many different formulas and soy worked the best for her it didn't cure her but it helped alot, also the dr. browns bottles were the best- they are a little pricey but well worth it. Your son may not be able to tolerate a milk based formula and soy is the alternative. when my daughter went to regular milk when she turned 1 she her stools were very runny and I had to put her on lactaid milk for about a year so I am assuming when she was an infant she just could not tolerate a milk based formula.

I had Olivia on regular formula and it really hurt her belly... It was a long time ago (she is 7 now) but as I recall, I only gave it about 2 or three weeks and then switched her to soy formula and she was great with that.

My son reacted to similac formula, and we knew he reacted by fussiness and a refusing to take it by the second time I supplemented. But I think most babies are a little different. I have been told that green poop may indicate a lactose intolerance. When in doubt, I call my child's doctor.

My daughter started on soy formula. I had to switch to a.r. because she was spitting up every single time she ate. I would ask your pediatrician before switching.

Hmmmm...he could be irritable for all sorts of different reasons.  Is he vomitting very much?  Is he screaming in pain, or is he just a little gassy and fussy?  Is his BM runny, medium, or do they look like rocks?

Remember, he's only 2 months old and he could just be one of those babies who is fussy. (My third one was like that! lol)  It's only been a week.  I say if he isn't vomitting constantly or screaming in pain to just wait and see if he doesn't settle down in a few more days.

You could also try an old fashioned remedy that worked great with all three of my children. Take a bottle of warm water, add a little candy cane or starlight mint to the water, just a little, and let him have a few sips of that.  Calmed each of my babies, and my grandbabies down in moments.  We call it the baby roll aid in our house!
