Table manners

My son is 22 months old. He's just perfect - EXCEPT with table manners. I know he is still young but we're trying to teach him how to eat one step at a time. What bothers me is he keeps spitting out his food. I always check to see if it's too hot or if it simply just tastes bad. We do feed him the same thing as us. My neighbor (who has 4 small children) says he's just doing it for attention either positive or negative. I have no clue what to do at this point! Does anyone else have this problem?

When my daughter did this I would just very calmly remove her plate. When she cried or asked for it back I would say (still very calmly) "Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you'd finished because you spat it out if you want to finish it then don't spit it out". A few times she didn't ask for it back so she got nothing & when she asked for something later I told her "You had lunch / dinner. You spat it out" and then ignored the demands. It only took a few times of going hungry before she stopped doing it.

Honestly ignore it, the more you make it an issue the more he is going to do it, as at this age little ones are little rascals and like to push our buttons to see how far they can go to get a reaction. He will lose interest in doing it if you just pretend it isn't happening.

I agree with your neighbor. You can choose to ignore it or take the plate away after explaining why this isn't correct behavior.

With my son, I explained to him that it wasn't proper, after 2 warnings, I would take his plate away for 1 minute. he got the point pretty quickly. He still does it from time to time but we just follow the same procedure. He is just testing the water
