Kadey is 5 months old and teething, i think...she has the whole drool rash on her chin and is gnawing on anything she can get in her mouth and has become increasingly cranky as the days go on, and this morning she felt hot so I checked her temp and it was 100.4. I called the doctor and they told me to give her Motrin and check again in an hour because it was most likely teething. Her temp went down with the Motrin but she is still very fussy. Could she be getting sick or is this teething? Her gums dont appear to be red or irritated and when I press on them she doesnt act like it hurts her. Help!

Quoting Joana:

I worked for a pediatric dentist for 14 years and even though you can't visually see teething, it is happening.  When teeth are erupting they have to pass thru bone first and remain encapsulated in a sac, or cyst.  The cyst then has to rupture before the tooth, or bump, starts to become visible to you.  I felt like I was giving my son way too much Tylenol/Motrin - which did help alot - but I actually found that the homeopatic tooth drops worked just as good.  I would give my son Motrin and homeopathic drops before bed and he would do much better.  He would never use teething rings but was a fan of chewing on wet burp cloths.  GOOD LUCK!

Wow, Joana, thank you for this description.  I knew there were things going on before we see them, but this really helps understand what my little one is feeling.  Poor things!  They shouldn't have to go through this while they are so little.

Anyway, I found this very interesting.  Thank you for posting that!

My daughter is going through the same thing only she has been trying to get teeth in since she was 4 months, I give her teething rings and tylenol, sometimes she likes a passy but her hand she uses the most. If your baby has a rash try putting Aquarpor on it, That really seems to help my baby.

It is very normal for them to have a low grade fever when teething. When you push on the babies teeth it relieves pressure. So she probably feels a lot better. Have you tried those teething tablets or something frozen like a waffle? Or also a wet washcloth, you can put it in the refrigerator for a few mins. and that might also help.

Hey Laura,

My daughter started teething at 3 1/2 months, but I didn't know it! She drooled quite a bit, but never complained, never had a fever, never gave any indication until her 4-month birthday when POP she had 3 teeth come in at once. She just turned 9 months and is cutting her 8th tooth and is now having some fever, but when she started showing signs that they were hurting her, around 6 months, I started using the homeopathic teething tablets and she loves them. I like the ones that dissolve instantly in her mouth as opposed to the harder ones that can take longer. You'll know the difference when you shake the bottle and can hear the hard pills rattle louder. I give my daughter 2 or 3 tablets and within 10 minutes she feels better and can nap. They also help her go to sleep at night when her teeth are really bothering her. For the fever, I've been using infant Tylenol drops. She likes them and it gets her fever down quickly.

My kids went through the same thing when they were teething but it started at 4 months but the first tooth didn't pop through until almost 5 months. They got a rash from all the drool, a fever, very cranky, and bad diaper rash every time a new tooth was coming in. So it probably is just the teeth. I'd just keep an eye on her to make sure it isn't a cold too. The older my kids got the better the fever & diaper rash was with the teeth. It's an on going process until all their teeth are in. Just another test to put us moms through I guess! lol

I gave my child motrin and tylenol. Then I also used teething tablets when necessary. A mild temperature is usual but if it appears to get higher than 101 and stay that high for a day or so then i would most definately find a different opinion.

My daughter didn't complain at all when I touched her gums and she was chewing on everything and drooling non stop.  I gave her Tylenol and/or Motrin plus at walgreens you can find teething tablets.  They disolve in her mouth and help the pain immediately.  She also takes a ton of Tylenol for the pain but that takes about 20 minutes to hit her.  Try to get to walgreens and ask the pharmacist for teething tablets.  I hope that this will work but if her temp. continues then I would make an appt. with her doctor!!
