My 21 month old son has some really serious temper tantrums when he doesn't get his way!! Is he just going through the terrible twos early or have I created a monster?

In my experience with temper tantrums, I have found that you have to pick your battles. I have been in the middle of the store and my four year old will start screaming if he does not get what he wants. I find the best thing to do at that point is look at him and say, "Throw a good one." I have found that they lay there on the floor for a few and then get up and usually are ok. They are more embarrassed usually than I am. At home when they do it, I pick them up and put them in thier room and shut the door. You just have to be consistant in anything you do with them. FIgure out what will work for each kid cuz they are all different. I hope that will help you.

my daughter is 23 mons (be 2 on May 10). She does the same thing the only thing I have found that works, if that's what you want to call it, is just ignoring her. I just tell her to get it out and when she's calmed down we start over. She always stops after a couple of seconds of us ignoring her. I'm with you on dreading them turning two.

holy moly i am convinced the terrible 2's do not exist wait until 3!! my daughter is 4 this may and i pray everyday the tantrums mellow out! And in all honesty there is nothing wrong with letting your child cry him/herself to sleep.. giving in is when you create a monster remember you are the boss even though rite now my daughter "thinks" she is!! good luck!!

Quoting Jennifer:

He may have the "terrible two's" early. The older they get the more independent they want to be. I hate to tell you this though... the "three's " are the real trying times. At three, they are even more independent and can communicate better. Just remember, this won't last forever and it doesn't hurt to take a "mommy time out" I do it almost everyday. Good luck!

I hear this all the time!!!  My son is 28months and is looney some days, a crazed animal some days, and a loving sweet little boy other days.  I say to my friends, gosh i can't wait for him to get out of this stage, but the response is the same - oh honey, it'll be a while - just wait til he's 3!!

No you are not creating a monster!! I have a 3 years old and he can also be a handful. I don't necessarily believe in " the terrible two's " I believe it is how they are raised. No I am not saying that you are being a horrible mom or anything like that, I am saying that it is in a child's nature to disobey and a boy can be tougher because this is just how boys are. Anyhow, it is all how you react to the child's disobedience, do not let him get away with throwing his tantrums make sure discipline him right away without anger, and always, always, always be consistent with him. If he turns around and does it again discipline him again remember that you are the parent and you always win. Yes, it will get easier as the grow and mature. I have 5 children, the oldest is 8 all the way down to 4 mo.

My 16 month old son is the same way. I dread him turning two. He doesn't get his way and he throws himself down and kicks and screams.....
