There was an article in our local paper wa few weeks back that read that most schools do not even teach writing any longer. The emphasis is on the standardized test scores (that the feds require) and not the writing class. I was going to add the article link but now I can not get the page to open, GRR!

I totally agree with you, I said the same thing when I am communicating with the youths of today via texting I will use correct spelling I have a few grandchildren and you really do wonder what's happening with the pen and paper and talking in person or on phone, times are changing we just gotta try our best to remind them about proper text by setting an example, the youths today are different

I am SO with you! I was an English major and am somewhat of a spelling and grammar Nazi so am always careful about my spelling!

It's so irritating! I hesitate to even respond to a post when the OP can't be bothered to spell out their words. Bad grammar makes me crazy, too. Their, there and they're. Nails on a chalkboard!!!

I will shorten You to "U", Are to "R", and before to "B4" but only if I am texting my kids. I have been known to type the (incorrect grammer) sentence of "WHERE U B?" when I am trying to locate my 16 yo son. Both of my kids get upset when I answer back with full sentences and all words spelled out. My 20 yo daughter is getting better in spelling her words as she is realizing that there are lots of people who are trying to communicate with her.

It is according to whom I am chatting with...I use a variation of proper English, spanglish( my version) , patios an that hateful "texting!" The last one helps me to stay abreast of what this generation is saying over all them chat sites!! Many of them have been rather surprise that I can understand their lingo so to speak!!

Textese for text messages, and 'proper' English for everything else is a good compromise I feel.



Personally, I don't use any of the abbreviations when I text. That's just me. I'll text spelling corrections back to my son and my husband too! 160 characters (or more with the newer phones) is more than enough for a simple question or acknowledgement. If it's more complicated, ring!



EDIT to add: I insist that my son uses English when he texts me, as in real words and as for the Finnish, textese doesn't work quite the same!



EDIT to add: It's laziness to use textese anywhere else.

Internet Acronyms (DD; IMO; SAHM etc) are totally different and belong on forums such as this. (I have a personal loathing for LOL because it gets overused IMO!) :)

I don't understand alot of Textese. Like when people write DD and LO and stuff like that I really don't know what that means. I never took a class in texting and I don't text so how am I supposed to know all the textese?

I refuse to use text talk with the exception of omg or lol. Other than that I write out every little letter. I hate trying to decipher text talk, and I hate poor spelling with a passion. If I ever catch my daughter being lazy like that I will make her write out the entire dictionary!

LOL, My step-daughter is 18. I don't have much choice there. My son is going on 13, he doesn't use his much, it has come in very handy a few times this year though with his after school sports which are not held at school, and then he gets a message his coach hasn't turned up. Not a happy mum at the circumstances, but happy he had his phone to contact me!!!! Also love it when his school bus breaks down and he lets me know (WHY do they ALWAYS put the crappy buses on the school runs???)

The rules are very similar here as well Jodi. Except my kids don't have the cell phones yet. I wouldn't allow it other than texting either.

Sherri, even *I* ban my kids at times from their phones, Nintendos (they don't have iPods) and any other technology. The aren't allowed to have them on holidays - we take good old fashioned board games. I dont think the text speak is a generation thing - I think it is often (not always) laziness. None of my kids do it except when texting (and only the older 2 have phones).

I can see that. I hate when I was visiting my parents and 17 year old sister and her nose was stuck in her cell phone texting people she had just seen at school. Ugh, drives me crazy!

It was just an analogy every generation has had new things that our parents have not approved of simply because it wasn't there generation. My grandparents didn't get computers or see why they were necessary. My mom didn't get e-mail until 2-3 yrs ago. My mom & dad refuse to text they think it is too impersonal instead of picking up the phone and directly speaking to a person although they do have cell phones. My parents also hate IPods and hand held video game systems as well and my kids are not allowed when they stay at Nana and Papas to bring there electronic devices they are told to leave them at home. My parents want to visit with the kids not have there faces stuck in a video game or ears plugged with the IPod at all times during the visit.

Sherri, you're funny. My parents are in their late 70's and do not hate cell phones or e-mail, they use theirs daily. I began using textese over 12 years ago with words like lol, sahm, etc. I agree with the other ladies, there is a time and a place for everything. Texting is the place for textese.

Lol I grew up in this generation and think text talk is the dumbest thing ever invented. I will use it for expressions like lol, SAHM, and MIL but that's it and I use full sentences and punctuation. It drives me nuts when my brother posts something on my facebook, I usually ask him if he's drunk cause I can't understand a word he's saying! my dad's better at it than me, but my son will have the same thing done to him when he gets old enough for a cell phone, the only way he's getting one is if he can pay for it himself!

The only text talk I will ever do is either when I am texting (and even then only a little, not so much that it can't be comprehended), or using terms such as LOL, IMO,LMAO, etc. Other than that, I have a really hard time trying to read posts written in shorthand or text talk. I often just give up.

@Sherri - I just love that you wrote "a lot." :) All I ever see online is alot, and it drives me crazy... I was raised by a teacher and I don't use text talk ever, even in texts.

I absolutely hate text type. I can't read it, nor do I feel I should have to. My sister does it, it's a crutch for her because she has a learning disability. Now instead of working harder she has a short cut and I can't read anything she writes! I also have issues with people writing and typing in ebonics. Speaking that way is bad enough, its lazy speak leaving off letters and syllables, I don't think it needs to be translated into writing.

I HATE text talk. It drives me nuts trying to figure out what everyone is saying. Text is my generation, since cell phones and texting was going on in my high school, and I still think it's horrendous. When I text someone, I don't care how long I take or how long the message is, I write my words clearly and fully. I even reread the text before I send it out to make sure there are no spelling errors.

Have to say, my kids are not getting a cell phone until they can purchase and pay for one all on their own.

I think it's annoying and confusing. My parents do to. I can use it and understand most of it, but if it's not in a text it seems a little pointless. My parents are pretty into computers and cell phones and such because I live half way around the world so I had to make sure we could stay in contact. My dad is nearing 70, I'm only 22. My sister who is 15 uses it a lot, but if she's not typing to her friends she types words correctly.

You only hate it because it isn't your generation just like your parent's hated computers and e-mail. It is new and weird to you. However, to our kids it is the norm. They aren't being rude or disrespectful, it is just a different generation. I choose to learn it a bit so I can understand what kids are talking about and when my kids do get cell phones so I can understand what is being said.

My son has to use proper words. When we text each other he can use "U" versus "you" "R" versus "are" but that is kind of it. Because I know he knows how to spell those words. He also has to use punctuation. other wise I won't respond, if he is away from home, he'll have to come all the way home to ask me in person.

I don't like text talk at all. The other day my friend who talks in nothing but text talk wrote - "do u stl av da sam 04". It took me ages to figure out what she meant. She was asking if I still had the same mobile number. Even when I write text on my phone I write in proper english, no matter how long the text is going to be I never shorten my words. And I send some quite long texts a few times a day. It just seems a little bit more respectful to give the person you are talking to the time of day to write your words properly.

What the heck is "Ebonics."? I use text talk a ton while I am texting because it is so hard to fit everything you are trying to write out before running out of space and I text A LOT a least 500-600 messages a month. However, if I am not texting I don't shorten my words. Just another reason that my kids don't have cell phones yet.

It reminds me of the other abomination of the English language known as "Ebonics."

yes! It drives me crazy, as well. If one is not willing to write out the whole word, it is not worth being said.
