i had one and breast fed with it. the problem i had was that it wasnt placed right so it made sex painful. i put up with it for 3 years and then had it taken out. then i bled forever! and heavy! i thought i was gonna die so i went in and it turned out i had gotten pregnant with it and when they removed it it caused a miscarriage. it was nice not taking the pill every day or a shot all the time but i wont be doing it again.

I had one for 5 years after my first son was born in 02, and I loved it sooo much I got another after my second son was born in 08. I don't get a period, it's removable and it only took me 9 months to get pregnant after I had the first one removed. The only thing they warn about is infection from sex with different partners but if you're like me and that's parts not an issue I'd say go for it.

Ive had mine in for about a year, got it after i had my second child. The first three months my period was very irregular and then the cramping was horriable. I will tell you there are good and bad things about the Mirena... It actually depends on your body it affects everyone different... I know I'm ready to get mine taken out it has taken over my life... The side affects are Moodiness, easily frustrated, lowered sex drive, weight gain, and cramps and sharp pains it can even affect your breathing... How it does all this I don't know... Just make sure you have a good talk with your doc before having it out in and wasting the money...

I LOVE IT!!!!!! The physicians office has to go through all the horrible things that "maybe, could" go wrong, but it is soooo worth the worry before hand. I have had no side effects whatsoever and love that I don't have to take a pill, put in that damn ring or get a shot. It's way convenient. I've also stopped having periods, which is great! They said the first 3 months can be hard with spotting and cramping, but I didn't have any of that. The procedure itself was no biggie, either. I was so scared and didn't even know it was done when she did it, I was expecting sooo much more. It was a breeze. Do it!

I've had mine since May and I love it. I only had my period once around the first month and other than no spotting or cramping. It was painless getting it put in and I would get it again if I had to do it over.

I got mine in 7 weeks after having my (July 09) and I must say from my experience do not do it! I have had nothing but problems. When they put it in they cut the strings too short so when I want it out they have to do surgery to take it out. The mirena went in sideways and is a constant pain. I bled for 9 weeks straight. I now bleed 3 days then on and off for the rest of the month. It is really annoying. I am getting some acne, migraines, back aches, weight gain, and TERRIBLE cramps! I hated having to take a pill every day but I am going to make an appointment with my doctor and talk about getting this taken out and something new! I got pregnant on the Depo shot so don't do that either!

I dont' recommend it. I had mine in for over a year and i started having horrible stomach problems and pains. I threw up alot, and it made intercourse very uncomfortable. My sister inlaw puts them in and she says they have had alot of issues and have been taking alot out.

Great Idea!!! I've had it for 3 years and no longer have a period, there are no side effects outside of bleeding for a couple months after insertion, and it makes great financial sense for those who don't have a lot of disposable income.

I just got mine in September after I had my little girl in May. I didn't pay for it - I went to Planned Parenthood and they covered it for me. I donated $50 cause I was happy!

So far I was spotting for 2 months- the Dr said "it's getting use to your body" I said ok - and than just recently it went away =) I haven't had anything else happened to me. I have lost 8 lbs and still trying.

Mirena does have hormones in it. Paragard is the IUC that doesn't have hormones.

Hi, I've had mine for 18 months and like most other women the spotting is the big problem. After an initial period that seem to go forever (2 months!) you can then spot any time with very little actual 'period'. I am getting mine out due to the lowered sex drive, I find this to be a big problem. Docs didn't really warn me it was such a big problem for some women.

I love, love, love not having to think about taking a pill or having a period. Unfortunately, I'm having two unwanted side effects. My face is breaking out constantly and I get yeast infections pretty frequently. I had no acne problems before the Mirena and I'd never had a yeast infection before. I paid $900 for it so I've decided to keep it in for another year or so. It's a hard decision because you never know how it will affect you. I say if your insurance is gonna pay then go for it!

I have the Mirena now for almost two years and no problems. I spotted for the first two days after getting it and have not had a period since. No cramping, moodiness or weight gain. But everyone is different, so make sure u talk to ur doctor first about it, but if you have never had problems with any birth control before then you shouldn't with this one either. It was the best move I ever made.

I just got my second Mirena. I love it. No periods and no sideaffects and no worries. In the long run, I think that it is cheaper than the pill. It is a little uncomfortable when they insert it or take it out, but it doesn't last long. I would recommend it to my friends.

This is the best thing I have ever had. I used to suffer from really heavy bleeding and crippling period pain, but now I couldn't tell you where I am in my cycle. Im ready to have mine replaced as have had it for 5 1/2 years now. Have minimal spotting every so often but I can deal with that. I would definitely recommend it!

I got the Mirena about 8 months ago. in terms of its effectiveness and convenience its been great...not having to think about b.c. on a daily basis is wonderful!! there is one side effect for me that has been pretty nasty though. i was told when I got it that within a couple months my periods would subside and i'd most likely have just one day periods or possibly none at all! yea, that has YET to happen...instead I bleed really heavy for 2-3 three days then for about 2 weeks after that I have a small amount of either brown or red discharge everyday..its never enough to warrant a tampon but i have to wear a panty liner. its very discouraging about this product and I'm seriously thinking about having it removed now.

I have tried it and it was not successful as it was in my belly not uterus. I was one of the 1:1000000. Its a little risk but its there.

while everyone is different, there seem to be many stories similar to mine. i had the mirena put in when my last child was 3 months old. had it taken out within 6 months. i could feel it kind of pinching in there and sex was uncomfortable. plus, the acne and weight gain and extreme moodiness got to me!

good luck!

LOVE LOVE LOVE! Before Mirena experienced horrible menstrual cycles...cramping, fatigue, bloating and a very heavy cycle for 7 days. Now, none of these...I have had it for 3 years without having a cycle. There was no pain in having it put in...just did it during a regular ob exam.

I had Mirena for a year. I loved it.....until it expelled from my uterus and I had to have it surgically removed through my belly button as it was inside my body-but not where it should have been! Not fun. Not common but it can happen.

I had the Mirena for about 6-months. I had no problems for the first two months, and then it was constant spotting, back pain, and cramping. After several visits back to my doctor, and 3 cysts later, I had it removed. The relief was almost immediate! I would NEVER recommend the Mirena to my friends and family.

BUT A BIG BUT ! It made me VERY VERY MOODY !! Had it removed and got the other one with no hormons and it works great.....and last for 10 years!! The first period is horrible but after that there normal.

My doctor would not administer this form of birth control. Just on the very basis that you can still get pregnant, but like I've seen in other posts, it terminates the baby. It's a pretty big ethical dilemma, if you ask me. I'd rather not go that route.

HELLO!!! i got my first IUD after my daughter was born, and i had it for a bout a yr and a half, then i got pregnant with it and miscarried because of it. BUT i got my second Mirena in July and i will say that i do love them! I am just bound to have babies lol i got pregnant with my first baby on the pill ended up having a miscarriage but then got pregnant with my beautiful abby girl who is now 2!!!

bottem line... i say go for it!!! i have not had a period at all with it.

[deleted account]

I just had mine removed last week after only having it for 2 months. The pain in my lower abdomen was so intense i just could not handle it anymore. I tried so hard to hang in there and give my body time to adjust but the pains were coming more frequently and just could not be ignored. It felt as though i was being stabbed ...always in the same spot (weird) ...never lasting long but sharp enough and frequent enough for me to realize the mirena just wasnt for me.

Also, I noticed alot of bloating. On the day of my appointment to have the mirena placed the dr weighed me in at 115 lbs.....last week on the day i had it removed, i weighed in at 123 lbs!! Thats an 8lb weight gain in just 2 months!!!!! Eeeeek~!

One more thing i should note ....i did not get the mirena placed for birth control, my doctor was trying it because of my heavy periods but i was bleeding more than ever with the mirena in!! The entire 2 months to be exact.

Just wasnt for me i guess. Everyone reacts differently to it though. Im just glad it has been removed. Its sooooo nice to be pain free again!!

[deleted account]

I've had mine for 2 years this Jan and I love it. Now, I'm one of the lucky ones that doesn't have a period. I occasionally have ovulation pain during midcycle but it's nothing that motrin can't take care of. All my friends that have it, love it. I'm a nurse at an OBGYN clinic and I've seen maybe a small handful of women that have had problems with it. There is an adjustment period at first where you may have irregular bleeding but if you can get through that, you'll be glad you did it.

I got mine back in Aug. '07 and absolutely love it! My insurance covered it very well - only my $20 copay. I had it put in when I was almost done nursing my son and my period hadn't started yet. Once it started back up I had light periods for about 6 months and absolutely nothing since! I hadn't used it before, but absolutely love it! I hadn't noticed any side effects because I have always struggled with acne as a teen (I'm 28 now) and it has flared up in the past year - over a year after having merina put in. So it could be coincidence or it could be a side effect. Not sure, but I'm being treated by a dermatologist now so it's controllable.

I had a friend have one to help out with her periods but had uncontrollable bleeding the whole time. She had it for 6 months and was probably bleeding for all but a week of each month, and also had terrible acne. After she removed it her periods went back to normal and the acne lightened up.

So it's not for everyone! Do your research and if it is cost effective for you, then I say give it a shot! Worth every penny of my $20!!!

Do it. No pills to worry about taking, no weight gain, no babies till you want them. The only downside was I had cramping and bleeding for the two months after I had it implanted, but then I haven't had bleeding or cramping since. No period in over a year! I even recommend it to non-mothers, even though they cant get it yet lol

I had it done about 9 months ago and don't regret it for a minute. Very unconfortable being inserted but once in then you can forget about it for the next 5 years. Apart from one period since it was fitted my periods have stopped and so too my period pain and PMT. The only thing i do get is my monthly chocolate cravings still!! I would definately have it done again. Good Luck. Hope this has helped.

I had one fitted last year I am a 49 year mum of 4.  Found it a bit painful having it fitted, but worth the effort. Had constant periods for over 1 year before having it fitted. After the Mirena was fitted this still continued for 3 months and had period like pain quite strong in the beginning and thought it wasnt for me or that I had an infection BUT and its a big but. After this time no problems at all, periods are regular, if you could call them periods.  I only use a panty liner for 2 -3 days .  My outrageous moods swings have lessened considerably . So for me , good idea.

I decided not to use Mirena, but am using a copper IUD. I'm happy with it. Slightly uncomfortable to in, but it's no biggie after labor. There are no drugs in the copper IUD. The only side effects that I have/had are a bit more discharge everyday, and the first 2 periods I had (which came after I had stopped breastfeeding) were extremely heavy and painful. The third month was ok and the flows have been much lower a year later. I will be taking it out soon to work on baby number 2. Taking it out is not covered by insurance unless it's 5/10 years (depending on expiration date) later.

[deleted account]

I have had one for years and am 2 months off having my third one in. I have had an absolute dream run. From the moment I had the 1st one inserted I have not had 1 spot of bleeding. I find that the discomfort the day it goes in is a bit like a period cramp but then it's all good. On the down side 2 of my friends have had them removed after bizzare bleeding. Myself, I would highly recommend it.
