Have been thinking about this for some time and see the ads in the paper all the time for the ivf clinic wanting egg donors for couples, having my own trouble getting pregnant in the past I know how heart breaking some of the challenges are. Do you know of anyone that has done this? Do you have a story you can share about this? or advice?

I donated eggs. Here was my experience: I had an initial exam that took the better portion of a day. This included blood tests, ultrasound, psych eval, and general medical exam. I was cleared to be in the donor pool about 3 weeks later. I was picked within the first week that I was in the donor pool. I had to start a cycle of birth control pills to synch my menstrual cycle with my recipient. I was on the BC pills for about a month and had to go to the IVF clinic once or twice for blood draw and ultrasound during that time. Then I had to give myself daily hormone injections for about 2-3 weeks. The needles were similar to insulin injections. They were easy to administer and didn't hurt. During that time I had to go to the clinic every 2-3 days to monitor my response to the medications. The few days leading up to the retrieval I had to get blood and ultrasound done almost every day. The day of the retrieval I was put under for about 30 minutes. The eggs were removed vaginally so there are no incisions or scarring. Afterwards, I felt bloated and had slight cramps similar to having my period. During the whole process you cannot consume alcohol, smoke cigs, do any drugs even if they are prescribed to you, or have sex. From start to end it took about 3 months total. I am very happy with my decision to donate. I know for a fact that I was able to help another family conceive a child because they actually requested me to donate again for a second child, however I had just given birth and was breastfeeding when they wanted to start the process again so I wasn't able to donate that time around. If you have any questions feel free to message me.

i don't know much about it, but i do know that you basically put your life on hold for the process - daily trips to the clinic, injections, ultrasounds and then the harvest surgery...hats off to you for considering it, it takes a wonderful and strong person to be able to do that for others...i myself had a hard time getting pregnant (took us 5 years and 3 failed treatments) and i completely understand why you feel the urge to help out others. :) my suggestion would be to make an appt at the clinic and get as much information from them about it as they have - they will be able to tell you how to prepare your body/mind for it should you chose to do it and they will be able to give you a timetable of sorts about what happens throughout the whole process.

I dont know anything about this but I think its really nice that you want to do it. I think it takes a real woman to give up something of themselves to help out other people. I just wanted to say good for you.
